So heartbreaking to hear that Kyah, the baby giraffe at the zoo, didn't make it through surgery today.

If the news coverage of the tragic Blade Runner trial in South Africa hadn't exhausted my emotional reserves, I would feel sorrier than I do about the former giraffe baby that didn't live long enough to share the defective gene. (and I think that even Charles Darwin might agree).

Heard this during the PM drive today. I was shocked. I would have been more shocked, yet (as my emotional reserves were already depleted) I simply thought, "Dang . . . That must have been one angry [b-word, possibly c-word]" and then continued to enjoy fairly light traffic, with some Mozart on the radio, and a clear blue sky with nice clouds. (sorry . . . I forgot about the dead giraffe there for a moment . . . ok . . . I'm heartless)

And my heart was so broken that there was no room for a dead mutant giraffe.
(is it too late to put in a call to Noah? Or possibly Mel Gibson? What about Steve Irwin? =)

btw: word on the street has it that Kyah translates as Dead Giraffe.
(what was the name of that vaguely harmless Tapir that ripped the arm off that zookeeper a while back?)

I think there is far too much anthropomorphizing of wildlife in the public domain.
It could be blamed on Walt Disney . . . yet that wouldn't be exactly right.
