Also better players tend to be more consistent and don’t make big mistakes as often resulting in double or triple bogeys. Say the better player makes par and the worse makes a double. In stroke play he’d be up 2 whereas in match he’s only up 1.

This is why four rounds of stroke play is how you should decide who is best. It helps even out if one team gets hot on one day. There’s a reason OSU won stroke play by 31.
On the other hand, if a team has two exceptional players and three mediocre ones it can win stroke play. But they have fewer good players and aren’t necessarily the best team. If you don’t have the majority of better players who can play under the pressure of playing one on one, you aren’t the best TEAM.

This is true, but not the case in this situation. OSU wasnt a two horse team, they had 4 golfers finish in top 15 at NCAAs in a field of over 150 golfers. Only 1 Texas player finished better than the worst OSU golfer in stroke play. Thats how big of an equalizer match play can be. You can also look at world amateur rankings to know who has more better players. Yes, it also brings in pressure and situational golf and golfers have to be ready for that. But it really doesnt determine best team. If you played this 8 team match play 8 different times, you probably wont see the same team win it more than twice. Thats how much of a crap shoot it can be.

Dont misconstrue this as making excuses for a losing team, but you saying it determines the best team is quite far from reality. That'd be like saying Tiger, in his prime, wasnt the best player when he would lose in the WGC match play event.

Best team should win either way. If OSU would have won you’d be perfectly fine with it.
Btw, I believe Holder helped push this. Why in the world would he push it if it is so anti OSU?

actually the best team would win the match play far more than 25%

Holder helped push it because it's better for college golf as a whole. Who was watching before the match play format started? Basically no one. The golf channel only started televising it in 2014.

Basically, it's a money thing. They're able to make more money on it now because it's televised and more people are tuning in because anything can happen. You think people are going to tune in when they see OSU is winning by 30? Nope. But they'll tune in for match play.

Yes, Holder was part of the push to bring in match play. Was all about making the game more exciting and to bring in more fans and viewers, regardless of how it skewed things.

Heres a little background. As with anyone knowledgable about golf, this writer knows that match play doesnt always present the best team.
Something had to be done if college golf wanted to grow. What was done was the drastic move to decide its national champion using match play. Most would agree the change has worked in creating more interest and getting more eyeballs on college golf.

Sure, the best team may not win.

We all know match play makes the competition more equal. We all know it does not tell us who the best golf team is. We all know stroke play is the best way to determine the best golfers.

Todd Kelly for Golfweek..."Matthew Wolff and Viktor Hovland, the killer 1-2 combo from Oklahoma State, will make their pro debuts together in two weeks the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut."
    • "Wolff is fresh off winning the 2019 Haskins Award and just prior to that, the NCAA Championship."
    • "Hovland is the reigning U.S. Amateur champ and was the top amateur at the Masters in April."

Oklahoma State’s wild 6-5 win over Texas Tech forces Game 3

LUBBOCK, Texas — Noah Sifrit raced home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning and Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech 6-5 on Saturday night to force a deciding Game 3 in the NCAA Super Regional.

After Sifrit led off the ninth by drawing a walk from Clayton Beeter (0-3), the Red Raiders made a pitching change. Taylor Floyd walked two more batters to load the bases and threw three wild pitches, the last ricocheting far enough from the plate for Sifrit to take off and safely dive in head-first to end the game.

Ben Leeper (4-3) allowed an unearned run while pitching the final 1 1/3 innings for Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys (40-20) led 5-4 after Colin Simpson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. Tech (43-18) got even in the ninth, taking advantage of an error and an infield single before Brian Klein’s sacrifice fly.

Cowboys leadoff hitter Hueston Morrill was 3 for 3, including a two-run homer in the fifth.

Dru Baker drove in two runs for the Red Raiders, with a solo homer in the seventh and an RBI single an inning later.

Texas Tech hosted this best of 3 game super regional; had this regional been in OKC or Stillwater, the Cowboys' chances to advance to Omaha would have been better. Oklahoma State Cowboys battled tested the Red Raiders who will be a good representative of the Big 12's power in collegiate baseball.

NCAA took unusual step of saying that at least 6 schools will receive notice of NCAA allegations regarding basketball programs in the coming future. OSU very likely to be one of those. Also KU.

Hovland is having a heck of a US Open. His final round still in progress but he has a bright future. He could set the 72 hole amateur scoring record held by Jack N. Beyond impressive (and this coming from a Sooner).

Hovland is really making a splash on the PGA tour. 64 today and is tied for 4th at 15 under at the time he finished his round. He was just interviewed on Golf Channel and is a really unassuming, polite kid. Very impressive.

Agreed. I've been pushing for one logo for a while now. Still wish it was the old oSu that was around during the 80s because I think that's the best looking logo. But I love that they got rid of the bevel a few years ago.

Absolutely agree. The bevel was terrible and the current look is much more clean. I'm still not a huge fan of the "brand" design and wish they would go back to the OSU 80s logo. It was simple, clean, and beautiful.

Well, Wolff won in just his third PGA Tour start yesterday. Not a knock against Hovland as he has been doing great since turning pro as well. Wolff drained a 26 foot eagle putt from just off the green of the 72nd hole to win by one.

^that was just an amazing finish yesterday. Bryson D makes Eagle and it appears Wolff needs birdie to get to a playoff. Nope - eagle for winner. The clip of Bryson is pretty classic - “Did he make it?”

Hovland shot 65 yesterday for another great finish. These guys are beyond impressive.
