SAN ANTONIO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO UNDERGO 2 BILLION DOLLAR MULTI PHASE EXPANSION

Starting with 950 million dollar phase one.

San Antonio International Airport officials are expected to present to City Council next month their 2040 Strategic Development Plan after a multiyear effort involving a wide range of regional and national stakeholders.

The initial phase of that comprehensive redevelopment plan is estimated to cost between $880 million and $950 million.

The centerpiece of that first phase is a new airport Terminal C that would accommodate as many as 17 additional gates, including up to five new international gates. It would feature a wider concourse design and passenger flow than existing terminal space and house a new international arrivals center.

Airport officials project that construction alone will cost between $790 million and $840 million. The project will be funded with a mix of passenger fees, Federal Aviation Administration money and airport bonds.

DELOREAN COMING BACK AS AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE. MOVING GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS TO SAN ANTONIO.

SAN ANTONIO – The DeLorean Motor Company is heading to the future — the future of electric vehicles.

DeLorean and the City of San Antonio on Monday announced that the brand is making a comeback and planting its global headquarters at Port San Antonio on the Southwest Side.

The headquarters will bring 450 jobs in the areas of executive, management and engineering, a news release states. The plan still needs the final approvals of incentive packages.
DeLorean said it will create a new electric vehicle production, a market that Mayor Ron Nirenberg called “increasingly competitive.”

“By planning to establish their global headquarters in San Antonio, DeLorean is validating the talent, strategic preparation, and adaptability our region provides for EV manufacturers to thrive,” he said in the release.

Monday’s announcement came after the company teased a return in a 15-second Super Bowl ad.

Yet another HQ going somewhere not Oklahoma. Typical.

Oh, and would you look at that, a BRT line that is actual BRT and not just called BRT because it’ll have platform stations. Incredible. How on earth does San Antonio do it?

I grew up in San Antonio and public transit there is horrible especially for the second most populated city in Texas and one of the top ten most populated in the US. This is good but should have been done 20 years ago.

Public transportation is lagging but great strides have been made and continue to be made. ART is going to be a game changer. Plus, trackless buses with dedicated lines will soon be a thing

When you say “trackless buses”, are you talking about the Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (oddly abbreviated ART as well) developed by TEC (Zhuzhou CRRC) with some of the technologically already commercialized in Zhuzhou and Yibin?

DEVELOPER HAS BUG PLANS FOR EXPRESS-NEWS BUILDING
Plans include upscale hotel, retail and multi family tower.

In a phone interview on Thursday, Sutton’s chairman, Mac Pike, described the firm’s ambitious plans for the 2.14-acre property, which will likely include elements of multifamily housing and retail accompanying an upscale boutique hotel “along the lines of Hotel Emma,” he said.

Though the project is in its early planning stage, the firm expects to demolish the additions made to the building since it was constructed in 1929, Pike said. The historic building would be converted into a hotel, with condominiums attached which would share the hotel’s brand. A multifamily tower would be built beside it, and there would likely be a retail component.

RIVER NORTH GETTING NEW FOOD HALL
TO BE CALLED MAKE READY MARKET

Established bar operator from Los Angeles and popular local coffee vendor complement the Make Ready Market food hall to create River North’s tasty new destination

SAN ANTONIO – Make Ready is San Antonio’s upcoming culinary destination. A dozen local vendors, including Mila Coffee and a brewery concept by Pouring with Heart, will welcome patrons with a variety of offerings to be enjoyed inside its re-imagined buildings and across communal green space. Construction is currently underway, with opening expected this winter.

Nestled between Broadway and the San Antonio River on the same block as The Soto office building at 711 Broadway, Make Ready will serve as a dynamic center for the River North neighborhood. Utilizing two historic buildings surrounded by expansive courtyards, Make Ready will be a natural gathering spot for residents, office workers, cyclists, and passersby to meet, day and night.

Make Ready is a re-interpretation of the existing name of the building which will house the food hall. Originally part of the Cavender Cadillac dealership, the Make Ready building was where the premium brand cars received their final clean and polish. Cars were “made ready” prior to being delivered to customers. Now the building will serve local, quality, “made ready” food to its patrons.

The project’s first major tenant will be a brewery concept by Pouring with Heart, a group of longtime operators and builders who have a passion for community-focused bars in Denver, Los Angeles, and San Diego. The Make Ready location will be their first project in San Antonio. Currently under design, their plan is to create a space that celebrates the existing architecture of the historic building it will occupy with an expansive outdoor patio making it ideal for an after-work happy hour or weekend date night. Bar offerings will include craft beer brewed on-site alongside draft cocktail classics. Pouring with Heart will announce the name of its new San Antonio brewery in the coming months.

“We immediately fell in love with San Antonio because it truly celebrates its culture and community,” said Peter Stanislaus, Head of Development for Pouring with Heart. “In collaboration with Make Ready, we hope to create a gathering place that unites folks through imbibing, and we are eager to connect with the neighborhood.”

Make Ready will also be the new home for one of San Antonio’s favorite coffee vendors, Mila Coffee, which operates a popular coffee trailer at Broadway News. Mila Coffee will house a stand-alone, walk-up spot along the new bicycle track currently under construction on Avenue B.

“We are thrilled to take this next step and introduce more people to our brand of coffee,” said Marco Cardel, owner of Mila Coffee. “Make Ready was the perfect place for our second location because of the community gathering aspect of the project, the connection to The Soto office building and other nearby businesses, as well as proximity to the River Walk.”

The overall development, including The Soto, Make Ready and the surrounding properties is being led by Hixon Properties. Based in San Antonio, Hixon has been an active developer in downtown for decades but is now focused on development of its River North portfolio. “Our desire is to find tenants that enhance the community by providing great experiences in approachable and familiar venues,” said Hunter Kingman, Vice President of Acquisitions and Development for Hixon Properties. “We know we have found that in Pouring with Heart and Mila Coffee. In time, Make Ready will be filled with other unique and exciting tenants offering great culinary and beverage experiences for visitors and locals alike.”

Weston Urban breaks ground on 32-story apartment tower in downtown San Antonio

MARCH 12, 2022 BY HERON STAFF

This week, construction barricades were placed around the parking lot bound by North Main, West Pecan, Soledad and East Travis streets, where Weston Urban has begun preliminary work on its 32-story luxury apartment tower.

On Saturday, parts of the lot’s surface had been punctured by lighter construction machinery.
The barricades were positioned around the lot earlier in the week, said tenants of the shopping strip across North Main Avenue.

Weston Urban’s plan to build the most ambitious residential project in downtown San Antonio’s history first surfaced in late 2020.

I hope San Antonio gets some supertalls soon. I feel like SA is ripe for a skyscraper boom within the next decade.

This is one of the first steps. This plus the other residential high rise you see in the picture above (the floodgate) will help determine if the downtown market is there for residential high rises. Speculative Office rn is not hot because of the pandemic but residential and hotel is. So, we shall see.

It’s been around a decade since the last time I was in San Antonio but the thing I remember too vividly is what felt like too many surface lots with low density even though I was still a young teenager not interested in urban planning, so I’m always happy to see infill like this. Hope San Antonio continues to build steam and thrive in the future.

The nonprofit Texas Research & Technology Foundation has purchased the vacant G.J. Sutton property, a state-owned parcel of land on San Antonio’s East Side.

Foundation officials said they plan to build office and lab space on the 3-acre property, with green space in the center that will help connect the complex to the Eastside community.
