I wonder how the hole-in-the-wall dive bars of today compare to The Crutch . . . The Red Barrel . . . The Sawmill Club . . . The Nook . . . Punkin's Place . . . The Corner Lounge . . . and The Hobby Hut. Not to mention Maurice's Club, The Eagles Nest, and The Frog Pond. All gone, but not forgotten. =)
Don't forget The Apartment Key Club. It was so fun back in the day. It later became Danny's Blues Saloon. I had many fun hours at that place.

Martha's is east of Council and Lamplighter is/was west of Council.

ALMOST as good as Eischen's? I guess they didn't set the bar too high then. They should have instead shot for KFC, Church's, Popeyes, or some random grocery store deli case, and then they could have been BETTER than Eischen's. I'm sorry, Eischen's is ONLY about the road trip. It has a good chicken rep because nobody wants to admit that they drove that far for mediocre food.

You, sir, are incorrect. Eischen's is delicious.

The only problem with Eischen's is that they only offer fried okra as a side.
(what? no french fries? obviously they have some deep fryers . . .)

Thanks for the info about The Lamplighter, Tritone.

There's a hole-in-the-wall dive bar, called Boots n' Saddles, at the corner of 23rd and Bryant that is apparently still in operation.
    Somehow I doubt that it's retained it's "cowboy/western" character . . . =)

Spoken like someone who is too embarrassed to admit they like to roadtrip for mediocre chicken...

I don't know if this place qualifies but I like Tim's Drive In located at
N.W. 50th and N. MacArthur. Darn good burgers and footlongs. They
    have Indian tacos, too.

Dang, looks like Midge and I are going to have to make a trip soon.

Midge is my live in girlfriend, a 12 year old Yellow Labrador Retriever that
the Vet thought was only 4 or 5 years old. She's sooooooooo healthy.

So will I. It's darn good chicken. I can't help but wonder what people
who don't like Eischen's think is good fried chicken? I mean besides Mom's.

My Mom is from the south and we always, without fail, had rice and gravy
    for our side.

The south grows rice and NOT potatoes. It also grows cotton but it's not
very good with gravy and I don't care who makes the gravy.

Are you saying that Tacoville is at the intersection? Is it good?

Tacoville. I'd heard this place had good hot dogs so I gave it a shot. They were good and the place was crowded. The door was propped open and people were in and out in a steady stream. A couple dogs wandered in (it was raining) but they were ushered out quickly. It's definitely a hole in the wall but I'd recommend it.

I thought I posted this yesterday but isn't showing up. It is in the strip shopping center on the south side just immediately west of where 29th splits off. It has been around since the sixties. During lunch, you will dee attorneys and businessmen from downtown making the trek as well as locals and city workers, etc. One wall is lined with beer coolers if you need a twelve pack to go. Inexpensive Mexican with homemade hot sauce that they also sell.they close at 7 and are also closed Sunday and Monday.

Pete, terrifying. But I commend you sir. I usually only have the cojones to patron the western bars (antique lady[now the spot] Vic-tims, or neighborhood bar) on Saturdays between 12-4. Before the people who were there the night before wake up and saunter back for more.

See, I'm the only person in my circle that I know is a fan of rice. Not a casserole of rice, but just rice. With gravy. My mom never made it, but I've made it for me plenty of times when it was just my mouth that needed dinner.

But, I still love me some potatoes. Irish heritage. Have to represent, yo. But I love me some rice.

I love rice also. One of the best meals I have ever had was at Roscoe's Chicken n Waffles in Los Angeles of baked chicken over rice and gravy with a waffle. Yum!

That's correct. Lamplighter is the place where a guy got blasted a few years ago. There's still regulars that will give you a play-by-play re-enactment of the murder.
It closed for a bit and is now Margarita Island. It's an odd mix of biker bar/karaoke/outdoor volleyball court. The current owner has sunk some substantial coin into the place and runs a good operation.

I have no idea what Martha's Tavern was in the 70's, but now it's a family-run beer joint. Fairly active in the dart leagues. The place is very small, but the beer is cheap (no liquor).

The 'mega dive' in that area is a place called Castle. It's a few blocks south of 10th on Council. It's basically a double wide trailer disguised as a bar. I drive by it almost everyday and have noticed the parking lot getting more packed. I'll check it out and report back.

Anyone ever checked out The Anchor? It's on Portland just south of 23rd. Drive by it frequently, but it has a foreboding exterior appearance.
