It looks like the news stations are getting a lot of donations and the Salvation Army is picking them up to distribute.

Any suggestions on who best to give a cash donation to? Red Cross? Salavation Army? Somewhere else? One big donation with one place or smaller donations at multiple organizations?

Forbes compiled a pretty comprehensive list for those wanting an idea how efficiently their donated money will be used.... The 200 Largest U.S. Charities for 2011 List - Forbes

Here's another good reference site: Charity Navigator - America's Largest Charity Evaluator | Home

In situations like this I'm personally a fan of the Red Cross.

I personally saw the Salvation Army in action after May 3, 1999. They brought the supplies to the affected areas and handed them to those in need. They also provided food as well as water to the homeowners as well as rakes, shovels, gloves and etc... Personally I would like to see money given to them as they make sure the money stays in the affected areas.

Text “storm” to 80888 to make a $10 donation to the Salvation Army and text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the Red Cross. Pass along.

They are all good people. My experience with the Red Cross was from volunteering at the shelter they ran here when evacuees were bused for a few days during a hurricane. They respond and help out when people lose a house to fire and other issues, not just with big events. I'm sure the Salvation Army does too. Can't go wrong either way. They all have boots on the ground.

From the Red Cross website today:
We currently have 4 shelters open at the following locations:
St. Andrews Church, 2727 SW 119th Street, Oklahoma City
Little Axe Resource Center, 1970 156th Ave. NE, Norman, OK 73026
Carney Oklahoma Senior Center, 301 E. Maple, Carney, OK 74832
Shawnee High School Athletic Center, 1001 N. Kennedy, Shawnee, OK 74801
Moore Community Center, 201 S Howard, Moore, OK
Newcastle Storm Shelter, 851 N Carr, Newscastle

These shelters will remain open throughout tonight.

Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicles have begun delivering hot meals throughout the affected areas. We are also operating fixed feeding sites at the Little Axe Resource Center, the Carney Oklahoma Senior Center and in Shawnee at the Shawnee Expo Center located at 1700 W. Independence, Shawnee, OK 74804.
