    More on the project:

    The Arcadia Lake Trail |

Above is their page about the trail project.

I have not heard of any progress on this thing since I first learned about it and the first FAQ is this:
    1. When will the trail get built?
The entire trail is anticipated to be finished by the end of 2014, with the first phase of the trail, the Spring Creek Trail, being finished by the end of 2013.

Well, I sent off an email to the parks administrator and someone wrote back yesterday.

    This is what they said:

The plan at this time is to complete the 3.1 mile portion from I-35 to Spring Creek Park first and hopefully by the end of 2014. The rest of the trail (the loop) completion date will depend upon finalizing and receiving approval from the Corp (the Corp is for it...there are just several regulations and hurdles to jump) and fundraising efforts. It is too difficult to give a completion date but the coalition is up to the task and is committed to the project. When completed we know this will be a great addition to Edmond.

Now if you notice above the website says that they hope the trail to Spring Creek will be completed by end of 2013 yet the reply said end of 2014. So my guess is that fundraising isn't going so well. Come on Edmondites! I do hope that this thing is completed by at least 2016. With the Oklahoma City trails that are planned (one being from the yet to be built Deep Fork trail all the way up to Arcadia Lake), this would really bode well for all of us that like to cycle/jog/run/walk void of vehicular traffic.

Is it funding that delayed it or was it the flooding problem they had earlier this year?

I don't think it would have been flooding. If you look at the master plan (it's somewhere there on the website link provided) you will see that the trail system is set back pretty far from the edges of the lake. Also, it looks like the east/southeast portion of the trails will be more dam/road oriented.

''Construction is projected to begin early 2014 on Fox Lake Trail. At this time, the trail is in the design stage. This trail will connect Mercy Hospital and Fox Lake Drive via behind Wal-Mart and Sam’s. A primitive trail is already established in this area. This approximate one mile stretch will be a great opportunity for those in rehab at Mercy Hospital or those coming east on 15th Street to connect to the future Spring Creek and Arcadia Lake Trails.

The design stage has been completed and preliminary cost estimates have been received for the Spring Creek Trail. Additionally, a environmental assessment, a wetlands delineation and construction plans have all been submitted to the US Army Corp of Engineers for both the Spring Creek Trail and the Arcadia Lake Trail. A call for bids will be issued soon with anticipation of the construction to begin in 2014 on the three-mile trail.

The Arcadia Lake Trail Coalition together with the Edmond Land Conservancy continue to work on public support, promotions and agreements while beginning fund-raising efforts for the construction of the 18-mile Arcadia Lake Trail. A engineering firm will be selected to design the complete loop this fall''

Arcadia Lake Trail construction set for 2014
    James Coburn
    The Edmond Sun

EDMOND — Progress continues for the private/public partnership between the Arcadia Lake Trail Coalition and the City of Edmond.

Construction is projected to begin early 2014 on the 3-mile long segment of Spring Creek Trail, which will be part of the larger Arcadia Lake Trail, said Craig Dishman, director of Parks and Recreation.

Private investment will pay for constructing the 18-20 mile long Arcadia Lake Trail, Dishman said this week before the Fish and Game Commission. The Arcadia Lake Trail Coalition is a nonprofit group set with the task of raising $20 million for the project.

All engineering and design costs will be paid by the City of Edmond to the tune of about $2 million, Dishman said. The estimated cost for the 18-foot wide trail ranges from $800,000 to $1 million a mile, he added.

“There’s a bridge that needs to be part of this,” Dishman said.

The environmental review process found no endangered species or anything of archeological significance to interfere with the project, Assistant City Manager Steve Commons said in April. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continues to conduct a final review of the area, Dishman said.

“The plan is to hire an engineering firm to design the complete loop this fall,” Dishman said.

“Before you get to Spring Creek Park, we’re also starting on a trail that will hopefully be constructed and completed by next summer,” Dishman said. - See more at: Arcadia Lake Trail construction set for 2014 » Local News » The Edmond Sun

City Council agrees to Arcadia Lake trail design work
    James Coburn
    The Edmond Sun

EDMOND — The City Council agreed 5-0 this week to approve an agreement with LandPlan Consultants Inc. for the first phase of designing the 18-20 mile trail to wrap around Arcadia Lake.

Designing the 3-mile segment of Spring Creek Trail from Interstate 35 will cost the city $200,000, said Steve Commons, assistant city manager.

“We’ve got a schedule now that we hope that come spring we will be able to initiate bids and construct that portion of the trail,” Commons said.

All engineering and design costs will be paid by the City of Edmond to the tune of about $2 million, according to the city. The estimated cost for the 18-foot wide trail ranges from $800,000 to $1 million a mile. The Arcadia Lake Trail Coalition is a nonprofit group set with the task of raising $20 million for the project.

The environmental assessment for the entire project is nearly finished and will be reflected in the design, Commons said. City workshops have taken place to take into account the suggestions made by nearby residents.

Work in progress on Arcadia Lake Trails
    James Coburn
    The Edmond Sun

EDMOND — Members of LandPlan Consultants Inc. will be looking at Arcadia Lake next week as their work continues for the first phase of Arcadia Lake Trails, Edmond Parks and Recreation Director Craig Dishman said this week before the Edmond Fish and Game Commission.

The City Council recently accepted a contract from LandPlan Consultants for the first phase of designing the 18-20 mile trail to wrap around Arcadia Lake. The first segment of the trail will be 18 feet wide, Dishman said.

“We expect it to be the busiest part of the whole loop of the trail system out there,” Dishman said.

Designing the 3.1-mile segment of Spring Creek Trail from Interstate 35 will cost the city $200,000, Assistant City Manager Steve Commons said in January.

“We’re moving as fast as we can with what funds are available,” Dishman said. “The Spring Creek portion of the trail which runs from the end of Fox Lake under I-35 to the park will go under construction we hope this summer.”

Construction on the first phase of the trail should begin in late spring and take three or four months to complete, depending on weather conditions, Dishman said.

So I'm guessing that the construction of the loop around Arcadia Lake is like a Phase 2/3 combo and it won't start until sufficient funds have been raised which was how many millions? Is there any information anywhere stating when they believe that construction will start?

Another trail thought. Since lots of people come out to the east side of Edmond to ride their bikes, some thought should be given to planning a bike lane/path as the streets develop/subdivisions grant right of ways. I hope equestrian trails will also be considered. I used to ride down the roads but too many people driving crazy fast.

Updated from the city of Edmond's website

The City of Edmond realizing the health, social, physical, environmental and economic benefits to trails, has a made commitment to trails in our community. With a completed Trails Master Plan in 1999, these identified projects are seen as an investment in the future as they increase community pride and improve the quality of life. In a recent survey for the Edmond Parks and Recreation Master Plan, 85% of responders expressed an interest in more connected trails and 82% wanted more trails in natural environments.

Two trails are at the forefront of the project list. First, Spring Creek Trail will run from a-soon to be constructed “wellness park” on the west side of I-35 between 2nd and 15th Streets to Spring Creek Park at Arcadia Lake. Next, Arcadia Lake Trail is a multi-use 18 mile trail around the lake that enables walkers, joggers and cyclists to enjoy the natural beauty of the area while preserving the native habitat and vegetation. This trail will serve the Oklahoma City Metro’s need as the longest and widest trail available to recreational users. More information can be found at The Arcadia Lake Trail |

Fox Lake Trail construction about to begin, city says
    James Coburn
    The Edmond Sun

EDMOND — Progress continues for the Fox Lake Trail, the Spring Creek Trail and the Arcadia Lake Trail, said Craig Dishman, director of Edmond Parks and Recreation.

The Fox Lake Trail, which extends from Mercy I-35 and behind Walmart will begin construction within the next two weeks, Dishman said to the Fish and Game Commission.

Construction of the Spring Creek Trail could begin in December. However, the City of Edmond is still working out details with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to finalize construction plans for the trail, he said.

In 2013, the environmental review process for an 18- to 20-mile Edmond trail to wrap around Arcadia Lake found no endangered species or anything of archeological significance to interfere with the project.

“At one point we were hoping it would be done by the end of this year,” Dishman said. “And then the Arcadia Lake construction for this year is kind of a big question mark at this point.”

The Arcadia Lake Trail Coalition is set with the task of raising $20 million for the project while there is a change of leadership going on with that process, Dishman said.

Wish Arcadia would develop a much more acceptable DEDICATED mountain bike LOOP. I hate I have to haul my stuff all the way to Draper for a decent ride.

I am glad though that Edmond is finishing the sidewalk on East 15th between Coltrane and I-35. Within a week it should go all the way to the WalMart/Sam's. I ride there often on my mountain bike to pick up groceries or a movie at a Red Box. This will make it less treacherous.

    Update from the Sun

Arcadia Lake Trail bid will be announced Oct. 13

The City of Edmond has completed all of the steps required by regulatory agencies to move forward with the Arcadia Lake Trail from the west side of Interstate 35 to Spring Creek Park, said Herb Blomquist, director of Public Works.

A bid letting for the work has been posted and will be awarded by the City Council Oct. 13. The bid documents will allow for 180 construction days, Blomquist said.

“From the time contracts get signed, materials or mobilization, the notice to proceed will probably be early November,” Blomquist said. “We would anticicpate pending weather delays to hopefully be completed by the end of 2015.”

Task Force member David Tew in representing the Arcadia Lake Trails Coalition said the group is in the process of naming a fundraiser for the project.

This fundraiser has been instrumental in raising $300 million for a T. Boone Pickens project, Tew said.

The Arcadia Lake Coalition is a joint public/private nonprofit partnership to enhance the Edmond Trails project.

The coalition is set with the task of raising $20 million for the project. The trail will begin at Spring Creek Park.
