Thread: Bierox sandwich in OKC?

    Default Bierox sandwich in OKC?

I am working in the middle of nowhere western OK. I got pulled over the other day and the trooper asked me where I was going, I said lunch. He told me to go to this little shack and get the Bierox sandwich. I did, it was delicious. I had never had one before. Anyone know where I can find one in OKC?

I first tried these at Octoberfest in Wichita. I have not found anywhere here that has them, but I do make them at home from their recipe.

    1 lb ground beef
    1/2 lb pork sausage
    1 can drained sauerkraut
    2 cans crescent dinner rolls
    Salt and pepper to taste
    Grated cheddar cheese (optional)

Brown beef and sausage and drain, add drained kraut and heat another 5 to 7 mins. Take pan off of stove to cool mixture.

Make 8 rectangles out of rolls, when mixture has cooled place on 4 rolls and top each with the other 4 rolls and pinch together edges. Cut small slits in top of rolls and bake for 15 to 20 mins. (Golden brown) in 350 degree oven.
You can add cheese on top in the last 5 mins of baking or put on top of mixture inside of roll.

I think Oma's Pantry does a version of these sometimes as a special. I'd suggest giving them a call & asking about it.

That sounds delicious as well but the lady at the Tumbleweed in Shattuck told me the filling was beef, cabbage and onions. I am sure there are different versions.

I wondered. The Whistlestop Cafe there is the only place I'd ever had a bierox. You're right...they're tasty.

Bierox are an old German dish. If you are in that area in early July your taste buds will thank you if you head over to the little German community of Darrouzett, Tx and their annual Duetches Fest.

My wife makes some pretty tasty ones. I'll ask her if she knows of anywhere that sells them.

Also called runzas. There's actually a fast food restaurant in Nebraska that specializes in them. My mother makes them with a homemade roll dough and they're delicious.

Best sandwich ever. I grew up in Shattuck and my grandmother made them at the old grocery store, Best Way on mainstreet. After reading this I need to find my way back home and have a few.
