Thread: Earth Day in Okc.

  1. #1

    Default Earth Day in Okc.

Today is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

Earth Day - Be part of the global Earth Day Network

Curious to know if Okc residents celebrated this today?

I told my carhop at Sonic that they really shouldn't use styrofoam cups. Not much of a celebration, I would have told her that even if it wasn't Earth Day.

I went looking - most of the colleges had some stuff on campus -duh

Adam Knapp put this About.com Guide online, very little of it happened *today*:

•Earth Fest - the Martin Park Nature Center in NW Oklahoma City will celebrate with Earth Fest, a series of Earth-friendly educational seminars that includes "What Storm Water Quality does," "Composting 101" and more.
    (on April 17th)

•Bike Riding Class - The city will hold a free bicycle riding class on the steps of City Hall. Hang around afterward for an optional 90-minute bike ride around downtown. (On April 13th)

•Nature Hike - participate in a free nature hike through the wilds of downtown. The 45-minute walk will begin at noon on the east steps of City Hall and "highlight nature-inspired art throughout downtown."
    (On April 15th)

•Party for the Planet at the OKC Zoo - featuring live music, giveaways, family activities and much more in observance of Earth Day. Events are included with regular zoo admission. (On April 17th)

•Special Hazardous Waste Collection at State Fair Park. (on April 17th)

•Metro Realtors Recycling Drive -The Green Resource Council, a task force of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Association of Realtors (OKCMAR), will have a recycling drive in which local real estate brokerages will accept materials for recycling such as cell phones and accessories, phone books, light bulbs, household batteries and old ink cartridges. Cell phones will be donated to a local battered women’s shelter. (April 19-22)

•Rethink:Recycle:Redesign - part of the OKC Festival of the Arts featured at the Six-Day Cellars venue.
Went right to "the horse's mouth", earthday.net to get pretty much the sum total of the days' worth locally:

"The Department of Central Services will celebrate Earth Day by kicking off a recycling program to include plastic, aluminum, paper and cardboard. Phase I of the new program will begin services at the State Capitol building; subsequent phases will expand the program to serve other buildings in the Capitol Complex. The Capitol event on Earth Day will include placement of recycling bins and collection of recyclables from state employees and Capitol visitors on the south plaza of the Capitol.

Personally, I hugged a tree, practiced as "green" a lifestyle as possible, ate some locally produced organic food, and exercised some the "unalienable rights" not mentioned specifically in our constitution - said grace while taking a deep breath of air into my lungs, marveled at the taste of cool water going down my throat and felt the earth with my bare feet (but like Skyrick, i'd do that kind of stuff even if it wasn't Earth Day.)

I'm sure she'll get right on that.

Well, we are in rural state...lots of farmland...and Oklahoma Red Dirt...isn't everyday (red) earth day here? Just ask anyone with kids/pets and light colored carpeting. LOL

I walked a little further than I normally do. No biggie, but a gold star for me all the same.
