    Default (The) Diner Stories

I was saddened to hear of the death of Mark Amspacher, owner of The Diner.

Since I moved back to Norman five years ago, it has become an integral part of my restaurant 'rotation' and I find I rarely get tired of it.

Had a friend come down from Chicago and she swore at the time it was one of those little nexuses or waypoints of The Universe that you just have to experience. Others I know have been pretty neutral on it or not heard of it at all.

From having to dodge the camera crew from Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, to eating breakfast three feet away from Coach Switzer, to one of the waitresses getting into a discussion of organic chemistry with me, I have good memories of the place.

    Feel free to share yours.
I hope his family decides to keep it going, I'd hate to see it go.

Sad to hear this. No gut bomb breakfast do I enjoy as much as the diner chicken fried chicken.

The random specials of the day are usually wonderful. I had a roasted garlic, mushroom, and cheese omelet one day that was probably illegal in a few states, but the chicken fry is always a staple fallback if one can't decide.

You just gotta love a place that deep fries the bacon.

I read in the OU paper that they will reopen Saturday and his daughter will be running things.

I'm glad to hear it will continue. I only pop in now and again but it has always been tasty and interesting when I've dropped in.

I drove past yesterday afternoon, and it was, indeed, open, and as always, the line was out the door. I wish his daughter the best in keeping it going.

Had breakfast there this morning, as always, very busy. I spoke with Mark's
daughter, she plans on keeping it open. She did tell me that 3-4 people have expressed a desire to buy the business if she decides to sell. Sounds like the Diner will be around for awhile.

Mark has several daughters, and the one who is now in charge of the restaurant has actually been managing it for quite some time. Mark will be missed, but I think that day-to-day operations of The Diner will be business as usual.
