Thread: Where was the Lake Hefner spillway?

Default Where was the Lake Hefner spillway?

I've heard from older residents and read on here of a spillway that once was at Lake Hefner. Where was it, exactly?

It was more of an overflow reservoir than a real spillway. It was about where the sailboarders parking lot is on the very east end of the dam. Where the lake road ends at that parking lot the road used to continue on south. There was a lowered area where the road went down sharply right where you enter the parking lot and went back up a few hundred yards later. Then the road continued on toward the south end of the lake and the ball parks. Any water that would have overflowed would have gone into where the two "wildlife ponds" are now.

You are correct about the over flow area. I used to run my car as fast as I
could and see if I could fly to the bottom of the road.

    Where was the duck pond?

As far as I remember the small pond at the SE corner of the lake. right where the trail turns west toward the ball feilds, was considered the "duck pond". It's still there on the south side of the trail.

I thought that was it but wasn't sure. We never called it the duck pond.
There was a car with bones was found in it when they were
upgrading the area. The people had been missing for 20 some years.

The Duck Pond was at next to Wilshire where it ended at the Lake Road, they held kids fishing tournaments there. It was actually a chemical retention pond for the neighborhood runoff to keep it out of the lake.

Here's a post in the Oklahoma City Memories thread about the Elston story.

I've seen this story several times and always wonder if the jewelry and cash were found.

If I remember the story right they were still wearing the jewelry when they were found.

It was theorized that they got lost in possibly a winter storm, there were some other rumored things as well that may have contributed to them driving into the lake. No one really knows.
