A proposed ceramic tile mural planned for the west end of the Bricktown Canal passed another hurdle Wednesday when it was approved by the Bricktown Urban Design Committee.
The Oklahoma City Community College project is co-sponsored by the Oklahoma Centennial Commission. Artist Mary Ann Moore, an OCCC professor of visual art, is leading the project.

The Arts Commission also has approved the $150,000 project, but the Oklahoma City Council has final say on the proposal. College Provost Paul Sechrist said the school is getting feedback from both educators and art supporters.

"We've had an overwhelming positive response to the conceptual drawing," Sechrist said. "It will be really a wonderful showpiece."

Two previous proposals for murals in the Bricktown area were rejected the past four years.

Sechrist said teachers are interested in using the mosaic as a way to teach students about state symbols.

"We are trying to just present in a ceramic tile mosaic all the official state emblems that have been approved by the state Legislature since statehood," Sechrist said.

Sechrist said the proposed mosaic could be installed in spring 2007.

Blake Wade, executive director of the Oklahoma Centennial Commission, said the timing and location of the project make it a perfect fit for the centennial efforts.

"We've heard nothing but positive comments," Wade said. "We think it's going to be beautiful."

I've seen the pics of this project and they look outstanding. They definitely liven up the water plaza at the starting point of the canal. I only wish some sort of artwork would be placed on the wall below the Santa Fe Railroad Tracks, stretching between Sheridan and Reno on the canal side.
