When did they close? I had'nt been by in a while and saw that the locations on Danforth and on 2nd & santa fe were closed. Why did this happen?

Danforth was awhile back - Santa Fe I believe was quite recently. Only location open is 33rd and Blvd. The funny thing is that Family Video store just opened at Edmond Rd & Western...and I think that video stores are not doing well right now with netflix and such...so I was surprised to see that open. I'm thinking we may have another empty spot there in a couple of years.

I knew a chick that worked there and she said that it was just too much for him to handle. I think it was a money issue.

Yeah, one of my friends' brothers who worked at the Danforth location said the same thing. Brick and mortar music and movies isn't really a profitable business anymore.

Anyway, I've heard conflicting reports on whether or not the last one is going to close. I'm thinking it won't last much longer, sadly.

Living outside of Edmond now this is the first I have heard of the closings and it is sad to see. I worked for Randy's for two fun years and Randy was a great guy to work for.

Red Box $1 DVD rentals probably contribute to this too.

Not to mention everyone and their mother partnering up with NetFlix.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings to see Blockbuster go belly-up. I just borrow from the library for free anyway most of the time. If I just GOTTA see it right now, it's over to Hollywood for me. Sadly, Blockbuster will probably be the last bricks-and-mortar standing when this is all over. Unless they build a Hastings here! Then Hollywood could go jump in a lake too...

I don't see Blockbuster going anywhere for a while - they've got their own Netflix-esque service with the added advantage of an allotted number of free in-store rentals per month. Brilliant, really.

  10. Default Re: Randy's M&Ms

Yeah it gives them a huge advantage over NetFlix. RedBox is way cheaper though if they have what you want.

I don't know about that. The way I used to rent movies and grab things from Blockbuster I'm banking that their system was actually cheaper. Redbox is $1/day of rental, right? I did 2 DVDs at a time for $17 (that includes 3 in-store trade-ins/month). I always had something out and had a huge queue.

Well I mean it's cheaper to get a RedBox for 99 cents than to just go into Blockbuster and get a 3.99 rental, assuming you don't keep the RedBox for a week. If you have BlockbusterOnline, you can definitely get more bang for your buck if you watch a lot of movies.

Ah, in that respect, yeah. Definitely. Which is why Randy's has got to be hurting as well.

wow...I saw the one on Danforth closed, but I hadn't heard about the one at 2nd/Santa Fe! Also I'm bewildered as to how Family Video is planning to stay in business. I've seen Family Video (a name that nobody here has heard of) building a couple of brand new stores, and in weird locations at that...like 2nd/Western. Video rental certainly isn't very successful industry right now, and it gets worse by the day...within a decade retail video rental will be obsolete and non-existent.

This is sort of off-topic, but...

I know that there are not many good movies at all right now, but Redbox seems to have a whole lot of CRAP crammed in with their movie lineup. I mean, I'm seeing movies in there that I think are similar to the imported knockoff junk you see in the dollar store. Then you see the knockoff's right next to the real deal.

Just wonder if anybody else sees that too...maybe I was just used to the nice selection of a real 'video store' like Randy's that I grew up on.

I know not to expect anything for a buck, but when the real video store is no more...where else can I go even if I have the money?

  16. Default Re: Randy's M&Ms

Netflix, pretty much. Yeah the RedBoxes are limited to the latest releases, but they don't seem to have the more obscure GOOD films, just crappy straight to video stuff.

Never heard of FAMILY VIDEO until the new store sprung up overnight. Right off, the name just sounds wrong. Makes me think of the old VHS stores that were popular in the late 80s. I just can't see how this (new?) company is going to compete with Blockbuster Video and Netflix. We still have a Hollywood Video on Santa Fe, but sad to hear Randy's M&M has closed.

Have any of you ever been in a family video???

They have some really good deals and a proven market concept.

Maybe you guys should try something before bashing it??

They are not new, just new to the area. I know they've been around for some time in Wichita.

The name is ironic because they actually have a room in the back with porn, or at least the Kansas ones did.

That's too bad. I used to go there all the time as a kid.

I wouldn't be surprised if Blockbuster went under within the next 10 to 15 years. Pretty soon everyone will be getting movies online or through netflix.

Yeah when I was in Edmond (I'm in Norman at OU now) I loved Randy's it was the only place I'd go to rent movies since it was cheaper and less annoying to go to then blockbuster. Sad to see them go, I was a frequent customer of the Danforth location since it was a block a way from my house. As for the Family Video place I'd never heard of until the beginning of last year they opened one (I think it was Family Video) at 122nd and Rockwell where I went to Francis Tuttle.

Movies, Etc. in Moore has been in business over 20 years to my knowledge. Not sure how they're doing though.

Randy's survived in part based on there music sales. CD sales are down. Any business that needs music sales to survive is probably making other plans.
