  • New hotel to be built on Continental Theater site

Champion Hotels of Oklahoma City is planning a $7 million 5-story Residence Inn on the former site of the fabled Continental Theater.

The theater had been closed and abandoned for years before being demolished. Now, the new hotel will rise in it's place directly south of the recently renovated Founders Tower.

The hotel will feature 108 guest rooms, a large indoor pool and spa, an outdoor patio, a fitness facility and meeting rooms.

Champion Hotels owns and operates 24 hotels in Oklahoma, 14 outside the state and 15 more under construction. The company also has a large tract under contract in east Bricktown with announced plans for two more hotels on that site.

The Continental opened in 1965, had 917 seats and was considered the most luxurious movie theater in town. It screened its last movie in 1983 and was razed in 2006.

Work on the hotel should start soon, as all building permits have been issued.

When it opened in the 60's, the Continental was part of an office park with coordinating architecture.
