Citizens of the City of Oklahoma City
May Register Storm Shelters
The City of Oklahoma City is encouraging every resident of the City of Oklahoma City, with a storm shelter, to contact the City’s Action Line at 297-2535 to register his or her storm shelter. The City’s water bill account number will be needed in order to register.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is using information gathered from residents to create a computer database of these locations. GIS has the ability to retrieve valuable information such as the type of storm shelter, the location of the shelter on the property, and emergency contact phone numbers for the property occupants. This information can be used to create maps of areas that are hit by severe weather. The Oklahoma City Fire and Police departments as well as Oklahoma City Emergency Management can then utilize these maps to organize searches for residents who may be safe from the storm, but trapped in their storm shelter by mangled debris lying on top of the shelter.
