Summer Job Opportunities Abound at City’s Parks Department

College and high school students looking to cash in on the local summer job market have to look no further than Oklahoma City’s Parks and Recreation Department. Plenty of summer positions are still available in the City’s aquatics and recreation program.

“Our recreation and lifeguarding positions offer a great summer experience for students, and anyone looking for a part-time summer job,” said Kathy Steward, the department’s Recreation Manager. “They are not only a great deal of fun, but also teach leadership and other valuable skills sets which students can apply in the future.”

Part-time positions are currently available at several of the City’s recreation centers, leading participants on a variety of athletic, arts and skills-based classes. In particular, the department is seeking qualified candidates for its annual Play in the Park program, which provides structured outdoor activities and field trips for area children.

“Play in the Park is our most popular summer program,” said Steward, “and has proven to have a lasting, meaningful impact on its participants. It also gives our high school and college students an opportunity serve as positive role models to area youth.”

For those seeking more of an aquatic adventure, lifeguarding positions at the City’s seven area pools and two family aquatic centers are also available. Training is free to those who become Parks employees. Applicants must be at least 16 years old to guard at City pools, but can be 15 ½ to train. There are several ongoing training classes, with both day and evening hours available.

“Our lifeguards are critical to our success,” said Larry Kelley, OKC Aquatics Manager. “Guards serve as the frontline to a safe swimming experience for our visitors, and help us provide a much needed service in the community,” Kelley said.

Kelley also noted that Bilingual guards are in particular demand this summer.
