The July 1st, 2006 estimates indicate the Orleans Parish lost almost 229,000 residents between 2005 and 2006. In 2005, the Orleans Parish was home to 452,000 people, of which the parish and the city of New Orleans had been dwinding in population for several decades. Louisiana in 2006 was the nation's poorest state in terms of per capita income, for behind Mississippi, and on May 1st, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release New Orleans MSA per capita income figures for 2006, which will paint a true picture of how badly New Orleans had been hit financially.

I am not posting this to insult New Orleans' loss, but this is without a doubt the first natural disaster to completely thwart statistical records for a small geographic area, and no one knows how much Louisiana will recover, and no one can predict the long term effects of such a huge hit to a city that has been in good spirits since Katrina. As the results come in, the hurdles become more clear and steep.
