I'm really not seeing anything different or new in that image compared to the last one other than the angle of the shot.

Will the video board always be running? Is it going to run NewsOK stories? If so, how is the volume going to work for this? Will it just be loud enough to be heard around that intersection or will there be smaller speakers that you can stand next to to hear the stories?

You know the auto-play ads when you look at the NewsOK site? That's going to be a majority of the screen time -- and doubtful on any volume.

Should we dust off the "Will electronic sign make Edmond (Correction: Downtown) look like Las Vegas" thread? :)What does downtown OKC, or OKC in general, have to do with Edmond's electronic sign ordinance? I'd love to see a couple video screens in downtown Edmond, but then you'd have all the old people coming out and droves reminding people how they remember when Edmond was just a small town that had Wide-Awake and that gas station that used to be a gas station.

It was just a tongue in cheek statement, since on a small scale this video board is more what you will see covering buildings of the strip now verses older era pole signs.

I'd appreciate some basic brightness control linked to a photocell. The video screen doesn't need to be as bright at night as it is during the day. (looking at you, Chesapeake Energy Arena sign)

I know someone that works at the Daily Oklahoman, and they've come to groups of us to see what type of information/videos we would be interested in seeing on the screen. I can pass that along if you all have any feedback. On the volume, they said there is a city ordinance (or something along those lines) that limits how loud the speakers can be... as of now they said you'll be able to hear it when close.

dankrutka
12-05-2014, 12:21 PM
Of course you don't want it to be blaring, which is why I thought it might make sense to have some small speakers on each corner that people could stand next to to hear the video board.

It'll be linked to speed-shaming campaign. If you drive by over the speed limit, the video will automatically snap a picture and display it on the board saying "Don't be a jerk…slow down".

Yeah, that looks really good. The massing is still underwhelming on such a large intersection, but it's a step in the right direction.

HOT ROD

It is a vast improvement, but I do tend to agree with Spartan that the screen is a bit small compared to the magnitude of that intersection, according to the picture. If I recall the rendering, the screen seemed to fit the intersection much better. Would have loved to see it or even a smaller board run all/most of the Robinson side and/or have another Jumbo at the Main/Robinson corner. ...

I suppose it could also be different to the eye when actually lit. Could someone confirm in-person with their thoughts?

I've seen it in person, I think it will make a big impact. As for other jumbo trons I wish to see big development on the Cox site in the future and have 1 or 2 video screens at the the same intersection, or on Reno and Robinson.

I don't think his comment was about the screen. "Massing" means the size of the building; i.e. this is only 3 levels in the middle of downtown.

There is a big difference between the difference between 4/8 stories and 24/48 stories. An 8 story building built to the street feels 5x bigger than a 4 story building built to the street, whereas a 48 story building feels about 1.5x taller than a 24 story building. Our perception of height of anything close by really starts to dwindle past 10 stories

wow, thanks for the film Unforsaken.

It really clears up a few questions I had regarding the massing and relation to the jumbo tron; it looks very appropriate actually. I suppose the setback of the building itself was throwing off perception in the pictures taken but the film really clears things up nicely with vehicles and people passing by giving prospective.

Amazing what a paint job does. ... Good work Oklahoman, welcome to your new home, DOWNTOWN.

ASIDE: now, please focus on CONTENT, CONTENT, as your articles tend to be very thin and a bit amateur (not including Steve and very few other fine, thorough reporters/writers). Inform the readers with background and research, perhaps include some professional opinion (like professor opinion from OCU) to your articles to beef them up. For example, I laughed 'heavily' at the article that was first published concerning the $71M I-35 expansion. It was top article but was only 3 sentences. Everybody was wanting information and a few complained. Then, the article was properly re-written (into at least half a page, with renderings) and THAT was a great article worthy of a major metro newspaper.

Will took this today. When the video board was announced the stated purpose was to "feature news and promotional information for civic and nonprofit groups". The thing hasn't even been turned on for a day and OPUBCO is already running commercials??

Also, remember that a part of the $1.5 million tax dollar gift to OPUBCO for the move was for this board.
