This is so sad to hear about. This firefighter was trying to protect his community, and he has now paid the ultimate price for it. In my book, he is a Hero.

Firefighter dies

The Oklahoman

A Chickasha firefighter who was burned while fighting a grass fire earlier this month died late Friday.

Destry Horton, 32, was critically injured March 1 while fighting wildfires near Duncan. He had been hospitalized in Oklahoma City since.

Horton suffered burns to about 50 percent of his body, including his lungs. Both of his arms were amputated.

Horton had given up his day off to help fight fires that were raging in southern Oklahoma March 1. Horton and a Rush Springs colleague entered a smoke-filled area, and their fire truck got stuck.

Firefighter's Prayer.....
When I am called to duty, God

Whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age,
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbor and
Protect his property
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your
protecting hand
My children and my wife.

A sad day indeed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his fellow firefighters in Chickasha and firefighters everywhere. These firefighters serve courageously in the noblest of professions. As we remember this fallen hero, may we be reminded to thank our local firefighters for their heroic service.
