And to think I took this for 2 months after I got out of the hospital for being treated for severe depression. I had these "sleepwalk" episodes, One time I took my does went up stairs while wife stayed up downstairs on the pc, nest ting she knows I come down the stairs, with no memory or recolection that I had done this that night, it happened more than that one time, after I started this "sleepwalking" state of mind I stopped taking it right away. I was afraid I would wake up in the middle of the yard or worse or even do something and not ever remember doing it.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Strange behavior by insomniacs taking prescription drugs, ranging from binge eating to having sex while asleep, have raised safety questions about anti-insomnia medications like Sanofi-Aventis' Ambien.

Researchers in Minnesota are studying cases where insomniacs taking Ambien got up in the middle of the night, binged uncontrollably, then remembered nothing of their actions. The researchers expect to publish data shortly.

Such sleep-induced side effects while on the medications have been around for years, but the incidence is rising because of an explosion in the drugs' use, specialists said.

About 30 million people in the United States take sleep medications, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. By some counts that is a 50 percent jump since the beginning of the decade.

Some of the most serious side effects are short-term memory loss, and accidents involving patients who drive the next day while still feeling drugged.

"Patients who may have engaged in this unusual behavior at night -- it's relatively rare and bizarre," said Donna Arand, president of the American Insomnia Association.

"The daytime sleepiness -- that drugged feeling that people may have -- is probably the most worrisome because of the (vehicular) accidents that can occur."

Other insomnia medications are Lunesta from Sepracor Inc. and Sonata made by King Pharmaceuticals Inc.. In the $2 billion U.S. market for the drugs, market leader Ambien boasts 12 billion nights of patient use.

Increased use of the drugs is spurred in part by heavy advertising and patients may be using the drugs for longer periods than they are intended, experts said.

Consumer group Public Citizen warned that Ambien should only be used on a limited basis because it causes temporary amnesia, according to pharmacist Larry Sasich.

Because the Food and Drug Administration's reporting system is voluntary and anecdotal, "we don't know how big a problem it is ... we have no way to accurately to assess the prevalence," said Sasich a consultant for Public Citizen.

Sanofi-Aventis said sleepwalking is a rare side effect listed on Ambien's label and that it reports all events to the FDA. Still, it had no statistics about the prevalence of sleepwalking.

Ken Sassower, a staff neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston said a colleague who had taken one of the sleep drugs could not recall advising residents on rounds the next morning.

"The memory issue may be an infrequent side effect, but when it occurs it can be pretty significant ... certainly that needs to be looked at in a more rigorous way," he said.

Doctors recommended against abruptly stopping the drugs, which can cause withdrawal symptoms including seizures.

"The risk was always there; we are seeing it more now because so many more people are using the drugs," said Merrill Mitler, program director at the sleep disorder unit at the National Institutes of Health.

Thanks dirtrider. I have been taking it PRN for about 6 years (60-10mgm last about 6 months). I have not noticed any side effects
albeit I can't find the remote, car keys or remember login passwords. I guess I must be sleep walking and putting the remote somewhere and lord knows what I had the car keys for. This might explain how the Big Gulp and empty powdered donuts rapper got on the couch... yikes.

I have restless leg syndrome where basically I'm constantly moving and thrashing around and waking myself up though out the night so I've taken ambien before. With that I'm able to sleep deeper and not ended up more tired the next day. My biggest problem with it was that I would take it and Not go right to bed. If you sit at your computer and IM with someone you will say some ummm amorous stuff that you wouldn't say while sane!!
I had a boyfriend at the time and if he took one too (thief!) the next day out of the blue one of us would say something along the lines of did you....did I...
I quit taking it and after awhile of not taking anything and going back to having to find the sheets in the morning cause I kicked them off I got some Lunesta. Frankly I'm gonna see if I can go back to a low dose of ambien. The Lunesta was twice the expense, takes awhile to take affect and leaves a nasty taste in my mouth for days and a day long clamped on headache...the negative side effects far outweigh the need for it. I didn't have those bad side effects with the ambien just that kinda weird feeling of what'd I do or say.....

Thanks for the heads up on Lunesta. I was going to give it a try but I think I'll pass.

I've tried some of the OTC sleep aids but the one I used didn't work very quickly I'd still be awake at 3:00 in the morning...course I don't get home from work till round midnight, but when I need to get to sleep those didn't really help me.

They've been together for awhile, if I remember right. I know they came together to last year's OKCTalk dinner. I could be wrong though.

I've taken Ambien before and the only issue was that I woke up to find my precious bunny in several pieces. Poor baby, he was a sweet bunny. Okay, I'm joking! lol I haven't had any problem with it. Right now, I taken Unisom to help me sleep. I don't think it helps me to fall asleep, but it does help me stay in sleep for 8 hours.

When I can't sleep, I take Equate (Wal-Mart brand) Sleep Aid. It doesn't have Benadryl in it like most OTC sleep aids. It has Doxy....something. I had to cut back to a half because a whole is too much for me. Man this stuff works, and it's cheap! It's the same ingrediant that's in NyQuil to put you to sleep. I've taken Ambien before, and I think this works better.

Oh GAWD the Smell!

If I take an Ambien, it's like somebody unplugged my legs about 20 minutes later. That stuff is no joke.

I take it and go to bed, I don't move for 5 hours, then it's like somebody hits me with a cattle prod. BAM I'm awake.

Doxylamine succinate. It's decently cheap: I picked up a house brand at Crest today for $2.99 (16 tabs).

Never seen it. Diphenhydramine varieties (looking at a bottle showing HCI) doesn't work for me. Melatonin doesn't work for me. I should pay Unisom a visit.

Thunder, that statement does not sync well with what you said here (http://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=27469) about your sleepwalking and other matters you described, during which time you said that you were taking Ambien.

Ambien and Ambien CR received a pretty decent discussion in the just linked thread.

This is an old topic. Look at the date. I didn't have a problem before and that a recent episode was a surprise.
