SUBJECT: Citizen Alert - Police Release Information on Purse Snatchings

Oklahoma City Police would like to make the public aware of some purse snatchings that have occurred in metro area store parking lots. Suspects are driving by women walking in store parking lots, reaching out of their passing vehicle, and snatching purses. The latest incident was Wednesday afternoon at the Wal-Mart parking lot near Memorial & Penn. In that case, two black males drove up in a mid to late 90's black pickup. The passenger leaned out the window and snatched a woman's purse from her while she was putting her groceries in the trunk of her car. There have been similar incidents at the Wal-Marts at 100 E. I-240 and at 6100 W. Reno. Detectives are still investigating and do not know how many incidents may be directly linked. The suspect descriptions have differed from incident to incident, including white, black, and hispanic male suspects. The vehicle descriptions differ also, and they may involve the use of stolen vehicles that are later abandoned. Women should be aware these types of purse snatchings are occurring. A good safety tip is to be very aware of your surroundings when walking in store parking lots. Keep your purse secured next to you and away from passing vehicles. Do not leave your purse sitting unattended in a shopping cart. It is always a good idea to limit the amount of valuables you carry in your purse to what is needed for that shopping trip only. Finally, in the event of a theft be prepared to quickly alert your financial institution and/or credit card companies about the theft. Suspects usually try to quickly use the stolen credit cards so getting them reported to your credit card company and the police in a timely manner will help the investigation. Other shoppers can help can an eye out for this crime, and anyone should call 911 if they observe this type of activity. Anyone who may have information on these purse snatching or any related suspicous activity can also call Crime Stoppers at 235-7300. Callers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward.
