MadMonk 07-03-2006, 02:48 PM Wow, do you work in a theater or somthing? You watch a lot of movies. I've seen The Break-Up and Cars this year...that's it. I guess I'm more of a DVD/home theater person.
I have to closely agree with you on the Breakup but make it a 5, and I'm disappointed with your ranking of Thank You For Smoking. Judging from the previews, it looks so much better than 10th in your bottom list.
jbrown84 07-03-2006, 05:34 PM No I don't work at a theatre, but my sister does at AMC, so I get free movies. But I'm also including 2006 movies that I saw on DVD.
Thank You For Smoking wasn't bad, it was just a little boring.

Martin 12-26-2006, 12:44 PM i don't know... the fountain was just plain weird. beautifully filmed... but weird. -M
jbrown84 12-26-2006, 03:05 PM It's certainly not comparable to anything I've ever seen except 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Not as great as that film, but great nonetheless.
Martin 12-26-2006, 04:25 PM yeah... i'd say it's on a similar level of storytelling.
so what did you make of it? i left under the impression that the past and future sequences were all in his mind... just different ways of coping with similar circumstances.
-M
jbrown84 12-26-2006, 04:28 PM I definitely think there are multiple valid interpretations. The past storyline was clearly in his mind, but I think there's a good argument for the futuristic storyline being the actual future, with Jackman being the last man alive after finding the "fountain" too late to save his wife.
Jack Wonder 12-27-2006, 09:41 AM I'd say the biggest disappointments for me this year include:
1. Miami Vice
2. Superman Returns
3. X3
But I've also seen some EXTRAORDINARY movies this year(!):
1. The Prestige
2. V for Vendetta
3. Casino Royale
As well as some 'good' to 'so-so' fair:
1. The Divinci Code
2. Hollywoodland
3. Mission Impossible III
4. The Holiday
5. Pirates 2
6. The Break Up
7. The Black Dahlia
And something I DIDN'T want to see but thoroughly enjoyed on a flight:
1. Thank You for Smoking
And my "Rental of the Year":
1. Inside Man
floater 12-27-2006, 08:18 PM I haven't seen near enough films to have the exclusivity of a Top Ten list, so here are my Most Favorite Five:
1. Casino Royale
2. United 93
3. The Departed
4. Devil Wears Prada (when Meryl Streep is in the room)
5. Wordplay
The biggest dud was Man of the Year, starring two of my favorite actors, Robin Williams and Laura Linney. The story was scattershot.
Karried 12-28-2006, 08:02 AM Hmmm.. well, I'm in a quirky state of mind so these are my favorites for the moment.
1) Little Miss Sunshine
2) Borat
3) Descent ( the scariest movie I've ever seen)
4) Divinci Code
5) Running Scared
6) Lucky Number Slevin
7) An Inconvenient Truth
That's all I can think of..
I want to see:
Blood Diamond
We are Marshall
Babel
Movies I hated:
Talledaga Nights
Dragon
jbrown84 01-12-2007, 02:43 PM If any one is interested, you can nominate your favorite films for the biggest "regular guy" movie awards on the planet, the Golden Schmoes, starting Monday.

Poster is a take off the Oscar poster:

writerranger 01-12-2007, 04:06 PM Little Miss Sunshine is the little movie that could. I've seen a few critics think it could slip in the Oscar race as a Best Picture nominee.
Today (January 12th) is the BFCA Awards (Critics Choice Awards). No live television, it will be on E! on 1-20. Little Miss Sunshine was the surprise nominee in several categories, including:
Best Acting Ensemble
Best Comedy Movie
Best Picture
Best Supporting Actor
Best Writer
Best Young Actor
Best Young Actress
If you haven't seen LMS, it's now out on DVD. I haven't laughed out loud at a movie in years until this film. It's a must-see!
------------------------
Karried 01-12-2007, 05:02 PM Good review on LMS.. Same here.. I think I've seen it about 4 times and each time.. I still crack up.. some people don't get it. But it is hilarious.. and I love the message..
What was your Favorite scene or part ( spoiler alert!) ? I loved the Officer scene.. and the horn.. that horn just killed me. Of course, it was hilarious from beginning to end for me.
Easy180 01-12-2007, 08:26 PM I thought the dance scene at the end was the best part...Knew it was gonna be crude since her perverted grandad directed, but it still cracked us up
jbrown84 01-13-2007, 01:18 AM Sorry. Don't know what happened to those images.

Oh, I'm with 'ya.....the cop scene was great! Actually, the whole thing kept me laughing out loud. I saw it at a crowded theater in Dallas, the whole place was roaring. It might lose something on DVD. Great movie!
Hey - remember those BFCA awards? USA TODAY HEADLINE: "SUNSHINE WINS BIG AT CRITICS' AWARDS" (http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2007-01-13-critics-choice_x.htm)
--------
jbrown84 01-13-2007, 08:48 PM I looks as if Little Miss Sunshine will make it into the Best Picture nominations at the Oscars. It has a 85% chance.
Karried 01-14-2007, 12:42 PM I just watched the Illusionist.. it was actually very good. Wonderful acting and overall a good way to spend a few hours.
Now, I'm waiting to see the Prestige.
Broken Bridges.. ugh - I didn't like it.. I fell asleep toward the end which is always a bad sign for a movie review from me .. falling asleep during a movie equals one or the other, not enough interest to keep me awake or my electric blanket is too high and I'm too cozy! lol.. in this case, I was bored.
jbrown84 01-14-2007, 05:33 PM The Illusionist is good, but The Prestige is a flawless masterpiece.
Karried 01-14-2007, 05:52 PM When does that come out on DVD .. because now I can't wait to see it!
