Indoor/outdoor complex to feature pickleball, restaurant and bar (https://www.okctalk.com/content.php?r=627-Indoor-outdoor-complex-to-feature-pickleball-restaurant-and-bar)

A Kansas City-based recreation and entertainment chain is planning a location in North Oklahoma City.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/pickle.jpg

It what will be only their 4th location, Chicken N Pickle has submitted plans to build a new complex near Broadway Extension and Britton Road.

As part of the larger 9000 Broadway complex, Chicken N Pickle will join Flix Brewhouse as well as proposed restaurants, office and housing on property that was once owned by the Oklahoma Publishing Company (OPUBCO).

Plans show a total of 11 pickleball courts; 5 outdoors and 6 in an enclosed structure. A separate building will house the kitchen and bar, with large overhead doors opening the ground floor to the outdoors and another bar and seating area on the rooftop.

Pickleball is similar to tennis but played on a smaller court and with hard paddles instead of rackets with strings. It is easier to play and learn than tennis and is growing rapidly in popularity.

Chicken N Pickle first opened in Kansas City and proved to be a big hit, with a large restaurant and bar area and other yard games.

The menu features rotisserie chicken, pork and beef along with hand-cut fries along with craft beer on tap from local breweries.

The second location opened in Wichita and a third is underway in San Antonio.

9000 Broadway is comprised of 55 acres and is being developed by Randy Hogan in conjunction with American Fidelity, which bought the former OPUBCO headquarters and surrounding land in 2012.

Oklahoma's first Flix Brewhouse is well under construction and plans to open later this year. A new headquarters for Dolese Brothers is also well underway directly south of this proposed project.

I love that this is coming here! Pickleball is booming, and very fun to play! However, all 3 announced items in this complex have vast expanses of parking. For Dolese, sure. But for this and Flix, I would think a parking garage would suffice. But other than that small qualm, I love the 2 entertainment options coming to OKC!

Keep in mind the city's codes require all that parking.

The only exception is large areas of the core where there are no on-site parking requirements at all.

Ah, ok. Well hopefully they will look at changing the codes in the future. But that is for another thread. Thanks for keeping us updated on the goings-on in OKC, and I can't wait for this place to open!

Just a shout out to anyone who is unfamiliar with the game of Pickleball- it is extremely FUN! There are all levels of competition and most venues (other than tournaments) really welcome beginners. Norman just opened their new indoor tennis facility at Westwood park and two nights a week are devoted to Pickleball. Its also a good workout- you have to try it to really understand. There aren't too many locations in the central part of the city so this will be popular.

Do they serve pickles there? I will eat there just for pickles! It is a pretty cool concept and I think it will be a big hit

I was a pickleball champion against my high school coach in 1996 (this was up in North Central Missouri where the sport was already quite popular but new to me). We put the pickleball along with a note citing the victory inside the trophy case at the school as an inside joke. I do believe after all these years, it is still there.

Oh, and, yes, it is an interesting game!

Been to the KC location several times. The chicken is solid. Parking was a b!tch as it was packed both times and there was a waitlist. The rooftop bar there was solid and there was space to play games on the roof. I will be anxious to see how this does here as the warmer winters should allow the use of the outdoor space to be maximized.

I've heard there are several other Kansas City concepts looking at the Oklahoma City market for their next round of expansion.

Found the menu online and it appears the only pickles that are on the menu are the ones that come with the fried chicken entree. Appears their main chicken items are rotisserie chicken. I thought they would at least have fried pickles as appetizer

I went to the Wichita locations a few weekends ago. It seemed massive. Almost like 4 different areas in one location. This is an exciting development for sure.

All the sandwiches come with a dill pickle, but yeah definitely a reference to the sport not the food.

The OKCTalk Instagram post on Chicken N Pickel has received more than 2,200 (!!) likes and scores of positive comments.

And today in the Parks section of the MAPS 4 presentation, they talked about wanting to add pickleball courts throughout the city.

I've heard multiple times (not sure the source) that Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the country. It's extremely popular with the retirement crowd, but catching on quickly with younger people as well. Over 600 members of the OKC area association.

I noticed the KC location's pictures show it inside. Do we think an all outdoor establishment is going to make it in OKC? Freeze your butt off in the winter or burn it off in the summer.

As the article states, there will be 6 indoor courts and of course the bar and restaurant is indoors apart from the rooftop and patios.

*sigh* while at the same time Edmond is planning on removing the Tennis Courts from Stephenson Park, which is a prime pickleball venue in Edmond. At least this is close enough that folks may just head here.

Whoa are they really? I love all of the Stephenson Development but that suuuucks. I've used those tennis courts WAY more than I've used the basketball courts or even the park itself. That's unfortunate.

Regarding Stephenson park, it is a great place to play Pickleball and gets a lot of use. However Edmond is considering repurposing Kickingbird Tennis center for Pickleball, which would change things dramatically since they also have indoor courts. I thought it was mentioned here but cannot find exactly where, that Edmond is building a very nice new tennis center on 15th street and will have to determine what to do with the Kickingbird property. They already have the indoor courts dedicated to Pickleball every Saturday evening.

I always wanted to play pickleball in a massive parking lot.

Keep in mind the city requires most that parking by code.

That isn't the only factor at work here, but it's a big one.

I think the problem (I see it as a problem) is that the City ordinances require a disproportionately large amount of parking. Given that this development was zoned using a PUD they could have argued the quantity of parking down, especially with so many potentially overlapping functions (e.g. office parking lots empty on evenings and weekends when bars/restaurants most busy). If there was a will to make this development anything other than a sea of surface parking, they could have done it.

I don't disagree.

But we really need to revise our parking codes and I know this has been discussed for some time.

It may fail, but if you’re going to go to a social place in the next year, it should be one with a lot of outdoor space. They have that going for them. But, yeah, it’ll likely be rough.

I for one welcome this development east of the highway. Pretty close to Nichols Hills and pretty close to Edmond. Those are prime pickleball players if you ask me.

Can they open at an occupancy rate where they can break even is the better question. At least they are not sitting on a finished building like Flix Brewhouse next door. Luckily they still have awhile before they even finish construction.

They aren’t opening for a while. I think they will be fine. If the number of people are fine being at Lowe’s or Home Depot Or TLC to buy flowers in the masses during all this, there will be plenty of people going to the venue.

How is it that Pickleball is such a hot fad, yet badminton never gets its due? Why isn't it the sport for retirees? Fear of the shuttlecock?
Seriously, I grew up in SoCal in the 70s and badminton was the thing, even among tennis players. It was an Olympic sport.
But I do hope this venue does well. I'm all for anything that encourages physical activity.

We also had a badminton set-up as a kid, in New Jersey in the 1980's. Never see it anymore. I didn't even know what pickle ball was until last year.
