With so many cable tv steaming services now days, I’m looking for opinions about the steaming tv experience in OKC. I am considering cutting my current Directv, keeping just internet and going to a streaming service.

1. So, what service do you have or had? (PS Vue, Sling TV, Directv Now, YouTube TV, etc.)
2. How do you watch local sports with the streaming service you have or had? (Mostly concerned about college football (OSU) and Thunder games)
3. Have you gone over your data cap set by Cox or ATT internet when streaming tv and using the internet for other devices (WiFi, phones, computers, etc.)
4. What device are you using to steam? (Apple TV, Amazon fire tv/stick, roku, etc.)
5. Any other issues I am not thinking of or could possibly arise?

I use Sling Tv and stream through Amazon fire. I work from home and have never exceeded internet data cap ( not sure if I have one or what it is actually if I do. ). It has Fox Sports SW and has a lot of Thunder games but not all. I wish it had all of them but oh well. I am pretty happy with the service its pretty good.

Your location has nothing to do with it, your internet provider does, and more specifically your plan. The cutting the cable cord thread probably addresses the rest.

We are primarily over-the-air (antenna) with Tivo for DVR. That said, we stream iTunes movies, Netflix, individual channel apps and Amazon Prime Video via Apple TV's on each television. Occasionally when our son comes to visit when an OU game is on, we sign up for one month of PS Vue and watch the game there.

I personally never got used to the PS Vue interface.

I did try YouTube TV on a free trial and I actually liked it. But we couldn't justify it when we knew we wouldn't watch it much.

Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon after cutting the cord.....

When I had cable I could flip through about 100 stations and never find anything to watch and now that I'm strictly over the air and have a choice of about a dozen stations I can almost always find something to watch.

Granted most of my viewing is on AntennaTV, MeTV, Charge, & Comet, but I can almost always find something to watch on those channels.... I do wish I could get the 42-# channels but I think I'm right on the edge of their 30 mile broadcast range in Moore and can't get them with my internal antenna and don't want to mess with putting an antenna in the attic or outside.

I have the MeTV and Antenna TV on a lot when I just want something going in the background. Nice to have some retro good old fashioned "wholesome" tv.

One reason we kept TiVo was so that overtime we sit down there is always about 6-10 shows recorded to choose from. Plus, TiVo is pretty good at guessing what you like and grabbing it as a recorded "TiVo Suggestion." I didn't realize how often Big Bang Theory and Modern Family airs on TV until I created a OnePass to get them all.

Additionally, we recently got really hooked on leaving the TV off and streaming podcasts throughout the house as we cook, clean, do laundry, etc. Started with "S-Town" and have been hooked on podcasts ever since.

There's lots of deals out there for streaming tv services. I recently took a deal from directTV NOW where I prepaid for 3 months service ($105) and got a brand new Apple TV 4K 32GB ($179) for free. It arrived in about a week. I'm not impressed at all with directTV NOW and pretty much only use it to watch thunder games but I like getting the new Apple TV 4K for $105. I will for sure cancel after the 3 months is up.

Do you know the range on it? If I recall correctly you are on the north side/Edmond area where this tower is located. So you probably get the 42-# channels I'm talking about... It's KBZC.

Range is listed as "50+ Miles" It also has the option to amplify the signal electronically.

I do know we tried those mud flap style antennas that are very popular and they didn't get us nearly as many channels.

We have a $10 rabbit ear antenna in our attic, runs down to an amplifier and we get around 40 OTA channels from the OKC Market on all of our TV's.

We had SlingTV for about a year, and liked the service for $20. We recently switched to DirecTV Now for the AppleTV 4K promotion mentioned above. Though the service is more than what we were paying for SlingTV ($20 vs $35), DirecTV Now seems to stream all of their channels at 60 frames per second which gives everything a much more natural feel to traditional TV, and helpful in sports viewing. We have watched the Winter Olympics on DTV Now and the quality has been great. Also, if you have AT&T Wireless for your mobile provider there are also some incentives with DirecTV Now since AT&T is the parent company.
For the price, we like DirecTV's channel lineup compared to SlingTV Orange and Blue Packages. However, for an entry level into OTT streaming, the SlingTV Orange package for $20 was great, unless you needed to view Big 12 or Thunder games on Fox Sports. We have had minimal buffering or problems with either SlingTV or DirecTV Now.

As for the data caps, we haven't really every come close to the Cox 1TB limit. We have noticed we average about 30 gigs a day for weekend viewing and maybe 10 gigs at most during the week for a few hours in the evening. I think the most we have ever hit in the last year was 700 gbs on a 1TB limit. (70% of limit)

Like nearly everyone else who has cut the cord, we still subscribe to Netflix and Prime for movie viewing too.

My main concerns are trying to stream big 12/college football games when it is that time of season and the ability to watch most of the thunder games.

I already have amazon fire tv’s connected to the main tv’s we watch. I also have an Apple TV in my office. Since we currently have directv satellite, I already have OTA antennas connected to the main tv’s.

We do have ATT as our cell phone provider. What promotions are out there for directv now and ATT wireless customers?

I have noticed that with PS Vue and Directv Now, there are packages that have the espn’s and Fox sports networks. Wondering if I can watch big 12 college football on Fox sports 1, Fox sports 2 or Fox sports Oklahoma/Southwest when the time comes? I don’t like the idea of having to log in to an app like the FS go app or Espn app to find sports all of the time.

I cut the cord for 2-3 years, and supplemented with Sling and Netflix. Wifi for my apartment was ~$75/month through Cox. I now pay $100/month for ATT which includes wifi, two cable boxes, HBO/Showtime/Cinemax and all the sports channels. Due to different blackouts and glitches I found Sling way too cumbersome and unreliable for watching sports. It worked most of the time, but didn't have the access that I wanted compared to cable. I still don't watch 90% of the channels on cable, but for College /NFL/Thunder and all other sports, I still think cable is the best option.

My friend cancelled att u-verse and went with PlayStation vue. In order to watch the thunder game last night, which I assume was carried on Fox sports Oklahoma, he had to use the Fox sports go app and stream it through the app.

So I guess even though he as the ps vue package that is supposed to contain the regional fox sports networks, you still have to use the fox sports go app to watch thunder games.

He was able to watch the Oklahoma State vs Texas Tech basketball game because it was on ESPN U.

Wonder what happens with college football. My guess is that you would still have to use the sports apps to stream and log on via the PlayStation vue credentials.

I agree that cable/satellite is the best option for sports. The prices are the issues.

FYI - there is a pretty good promotion going on right now through DIRECTV NOW - Prepay for only 3 months of service ($35/mo = $105) and get a brand new Apple TV 4K for FREE! ($179 value) (https://www.directvnow.com/appletv).

Plus, there are some other promotions that can be stacked right now - like a Bank Of America $35 rebate, etc.

Good deal if you are in the market for a Apple streaming device for the best price in town - plus you can check out DIRECTV NOW for 3 months.

Recently switched to DirectTV Now to the 80 channel package for $50 a month which gives us Fox Sports Oklahoma as an actual channel. We will drop down to $35/month plan when thunder games are over. We wanted to get Sling because its built right into the TV (as an app in LG WebOS) but Discovery channel and Science channel were not available on Sling whatsoever so it was a deal breaker.

No DVR currently on DirectTV Now however they say its coming soon. We use an inexpensive Roku and have to change HDMI inputs in order to watch TV (requires an additional remote for Roku), not a big deal though.

Are you experiencing the blue circle (buffering) at all while watching? We loved DirectTVNow but around Christmas it just starting having huge buffering issues. It was so bad we switched to SlingTV which never buffers.

We've only been DirectTV Now users for a few weeks (doing the 3 months to get the Apple TV). So far it has been great, with no buffering issues. We did have buffering with Sling when we tried it. DirectTV Now also streams great to our smart phones - but with and without wifi. It's been great to watch while at the gym (on WiFi) or on the road. While we will probably cancel at the end of the prepaid 3-months, I would consider it during the winter months when we are inside more. Definitely needs a DVR feature though - it's in Beta now.

Just another quick update. I ran into a Sprint store for something and was reminded I could now get Hulu streaming service for free with my Sprint account! I signed up and it is set to start in a week or so. I tried Hulu in the past and preferred my cable and Netflix options, but with Cox cable gone and this free - I'm all in.

I took the exact same offer. My only complaints is the program guide is terrible and there is no DVR. I've yet to have a buffering issue although I seldom watch anything on it. Now on the plus side the Apple TV 4K totally rocks. That alone is well worth taking the offer.

Can anyone with DirecTV Now answer this? If you are in the OKC area, do you have NBC/KFOR available?

I live in SW OK. My DirecTV Now service has CBS, ABC, and Fox, all OKC affiliates. I also have CBS All Access which has the CBS affiliate out of Wichita Falls. However, NBC does not provide a local affiliate from either OKC or Wichita Falls. The NBC app and the NBC access through DirecTV Now only shows limited programming and nothing Live.

Anyone know the reason?

No, KFOR is not available on DirecTV Now. Best guess, DirecTV Now/ATT could not come to a streaming agreement with KFOR/Tribune. Hearst (KOCO), Sinclair (FOX 25), and Griffin (KWTV), appears did.

As for the NBC App, I have not noticed any problems accessing on-demand NBC programs.

For those that have SlingTV and the blue package, is KFOR offered with the other NBC branded channels?

I have the firestick. This is the Directv Now app that mimics cable. It has a good line up of channels, except NBC. I watch it and Amazon Prime Video more than Netflix or Hulu.
I spend less than with cable and have OKC news (again, albeit for KFOR). If you have cable in SW OK, you get the Wichita Falls affiliates and Lawton's KSWO instead of OKC.

DirecTV Now announced a price hike, the lowest package will now begin at $50 month and many of the current channels have been removed under the new package lineups. For current subscribers, they can keep the current channel lineup, but will still see the jump of $10 starting after April 12. Part of the new package is including HBO.

Out of the streaming OTT options, DirecTV Now at one time had one of the best "top" channel lineups and offered a smooth cable-like 60 frames per second on all of their channels.

With paying for a decent internet package and data caps closing in on a quality 1080/60p stream, $50 a month with DirecTV Now and another $20 for Prime Video and Netflix...Cord Cutting doesn't seem to make as much sense as it did a year ago.

I canceled cable when I was bundling services and paying around $140 a month. A few years later, right back to paying $140 a month.

I got rid of cable all together about a month ago. Currently I went with YouTubeTV based on the channels and the unlimited DVR cabability. The direct tv streaming service and Hulu both seemed good options as well, but for what we want YTTV was best, and it has live local news on all major networks except NBC (so what that means is it has all NBC shows, just not the local news on NBC, which is fine). It is 40.00 a month and you can cancel anytime. HULU live tv is going up to 45.00 I believe. I am trying the free trial for a month of the very basic HULU option that will allow you to watch shows a day after they air, but this option doesn't have some of my favorites available...but it does have some classics. They all have free trial periods which is nice so you can see what is best suited for you, but all of them are cheaper than cable!! I kept my internet through ATT. YTTV didn't have History channel and Motor Trend which my husband likes so we got the apps so he can watch whatever...of course nothing is free so a "subscription" to those is 50.00 per year which is still much cheaper than my 220.00 cable bill that I got rid of. So far, about a month later I am definitely happy I switched over and cut the cord. You have nothing to loose as they all offer free trial periods.

In my household, our TV needs are pretty simple. When I cut the cord, it was actually a downsizing; I had Cox's Advanced TV Preferred in a triple-play bundle with basic phone service and 150Mbps internet, and we were paying over $230 a month. I switched to gigabit AT&T Fiber ($90/mo) and Sling Blue with Cloud DVR ($30/mo) running on a Roku, supplemented with an attic antenna and a TiVo. We still get almost all of the channels we want to watch, and the picture quality of Sling looks better (to my eyes) than Cox did. I am also finding OTA channels to be quite acceptable content-wise... I'm enjoying watching the re-runs of Andromeda, Stargate SG-1, and Babylon 5 on Comet. I worried a lot about cordcutting, but in the end I couldn't be happier with the content mix I have access to now.

What is the best way to get all the Thunder games if you cut the cord?

Sling Orange with the Sports Extra package and an OTA antenna would probably be your best bang for the buck option. NBA games this season are on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, and NBA TV. Sling Orange + Sports Extra costs $30/mo and gets you ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, and NBA TV (plus 50-ish other channels), but then you'll need an OTA antenna to get ABC. If you don't care about NBA TV, you can drop the Sports Extra package and save $5 - but you would miss any game only broadcast on NBA TV. If you don't have an OTA antenna, YouTube TV and PS Vue's Core bundle both stream KOCO 5 (ABC) live, as well as ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, and NBA TV. If you don't care about NBA TV, Hulu + Live TV and DirecTV Now's Plus bundle also stream KOCO 5 (ABC), ESPN, ESPN2, and TNT, just wi. All four of those options come at a significant premium vs Sling Orange (with or without Sports Extra), but all four also offer more channels than Sling Orange, so depending on what channels you're really interested in watching, you may need a higher priced package to get everything you want. I'd recommend using a service such as Untangle.TV (http://untangle.tv) or Suppose (https://www.suppose.tv)to help you select a streaming provider based on the channels and shows you're most interested in.

Here's the results from Suppose that I used to help write this post: https://www.suppose.tv/tv?m=41&f=1l41l113r!114r!419r!1815!291l250l100l1l0l3!18!6! 5!19ll1&r=ByW6ZPdvV

I'll just throw this out here ... If you are just the opposite of needing the sports fix, there are incredible deals for that person.
If you're okay with sports only on local OTA (including sub-channels which would include Stadium).. look at these two:

Philo TV for $16 or $20 per month
AND (as in "in addition to")
AT&T WatchTV
$15

Total: $31 (if you don't need anything in the Philo $20 package)

Yes, quite a bit of overlap, but WatchTV also includes CNN (which is the only news content on both services combined), TCM, TNT and other TimeWarner content that's not on Philo.

Remember, TimeWarner is owned by AT&T. If you believe the conspiracy theorists (and I'm starting to), AT&T is actively tanking their DirectTV Now service with plans to offer only WatchTV, where they can load up with their own content, and purchase more selective content and sell on a quantity model, keeping it at $15 or even $20 with a sports channel or two. Because of all the content they now own, they could price everybody else out - especially their rival - the DISH-owned SlingTV. Yes, problems with monopolies. But, it's a hard deal to beat with the two.

Here's a comparison of the two...

Okay, this is lengthy bear with me -- after mulling it over for a while, about five years ago we cut the cable pig and bought all the streaming things and antenna. It was SO GREAT I felt liberated. We paid $45 for the Sling which included sports so we could watch our local sports including the Thunder and OU. Then we paid Netflix whol kept increasing in price, but was about $12/month. Our high speed internet cost us in the neighborhood of $45 -- we had a lower tier but everything buffered when several of us were watching different TVs and streaming while any of us were on our phones or tablets, etc. so we had to upgrade to a mid-tier internet. I even had Hulu so I could watch my local TV shows on demand, which was like $5.99/month. Hulu wasn't a catch all because they only had a couple of my favorite shows -- they don't have ALL shows, be aware. You can watch on demand these shows, but now the networks (ABC, CBS, etc) are charging monthly access! But still, I loved that I was saving a bunch of money. After doing this for about five years, I realized that I was paying at about $110/month for all this total -- the payments were all different times during the month so it didn't seem like I was paying that much. Anyway, in my continuous quest to save money, I found a Direct TV package that I like that I'm paying $52/month and I get all my local channels and my sports package. I'm able to lower my internet speed since we are not streaming through our Roku boxes anymore so my internet is approx $40. I ended up dropping Netflix, however have since picked it back up only because my cellphone company pays for it. Anyway, I'm paying less than what I was AND I don't have multiple remotes -- I don't have to hear my wife complain about having to navigate through Kingdom Come to find what she wants to watch. I think it's a win. Cable and sat companies are catching on and lowering their prices for consumers. That's what I've found anyway. I think it's all a wash give or take a few bucks when you add it ALL together -- your internet and streaming avenues. That, and I'm back to one remote control to control everything and I have a whole home DVR. So after a five year hiatus we are back with satellite and we couldn't be happier.

stile99
03-18-2019, 04:49 AM
When, exactly, did you switch to satellite? Because I suspect when your promotional offer has expired, you're going to disagree with yourself. Cable and sat companies are most certainly NOT lowering their prices. AT&T hasn't been in the news for the last week for lowering their price for the second time in a period of a few months.

In fact, if I look on DirecTV's web site, your bill will more than double, depending what package you are on. I'm going to assume at $52 with local and sports you're on the $35 plan? If this is correct, you really need to check the fine print. That's a 24-month agreement, and goes to $81 in months 12-24. If you're on the $40/month plan, that goes to $93. The $45/month plan goes to $110.

All their other plans are the exact same, more than double the second year of your two-year agreement. You might think you can call and haggle, but you can't, you are under an agreement.

My advice? Don't throw away the scissors.

I think we are just changing the name of what we are doing: the same few companies own the pipeline and most of the valves to open the flow. AT&T owns the copper phone line, fiber-optic line, satellite television service, and the wireless phone system. They own the content distributor Time-Warner (or whatever it's called now) and the creation companies (Turner, Warner, etc.). They are one example. They only people really cutting the cord are ones who go over the air only. The rest of us are discussing how we buy content for our devices through almost seamlessly interchangeable means.

I have Playstation Vue, but Thunder games on FS Oklahoma stream terribly. I don't know why, but it is extremely laggy and stops every few minutes. And I have gigabyte internet from AT&T. None of the other sports channels freeze like that. I may have to try YouTube TV or go back to cable.

that's strange. i have a friend who has playstation vue, and we watch at his house regularly for thunder games and never an issue. i think he has cox internet. so that's the only real difference

Can someone with YouTube TV tell me if they get Fox Sports-OK? (ie, most Thunder games?)

Their line up says FS-SW, but I think that means FS-OK (if you stream from OK).

Yes YouTube TV gets all Thunder games. Been using it exclusively for over a year.

I'll tell you this much: I was originally planning to go Sling with both their Orange and Blue packages, but they don't include local stations. So I was going to pick up an attic antenna and network tuner for OTA stations; but I just verified that YouTube TV carries all the main local stations (but not the subchannels). For $50/month, unlimited DVR, up to six accounts and three simultaneous streams, its getting really close to approaching a no-brainer. That'll drop Cox for me down to Internet pipe only.

I've been recommending YouTube TV to everyone I know that wants to switch and not one single person that has regrets it in the slightest. The fact your can pick any TV or device and it just functions the same over everything is just exactly how you expect TV in 2020 to function.

For their big claim to fame being *local* channels, that’s odd in 2020 since those are free OTA anyway. Dollar for dollar I see YTTV as the worst of the bunch. Heavy on sports, don’t have many of the lifestyle channels. For example — none of the three Hallmark channels, no Lifetime or Lifetime Movie Network. Also, none, zero, of any of the new true crime channels. Several of which are excellent. Too much hype around YoutubeTV.

Well that's pretty subjective. Completely depends on what channels a person actually watches. I personally never watch any of those channels you listed (three Hallmark channels, no Lifetime or Lifetime Movie Network). That said, I also find cable/streaming packages with sports channels to be a waste for our needs as we never watch sports.

I do free YouTube TV trials from time-to-time when I need to. If I was to decide to go back to cable, I'd certainly consider YouTubeTV to be one of my top considerations. Definitely has the channels we watch. Any sub channels we can get with our OTA antenna. I just can't justify $600/yr to simply sit in front of a TV from any provider.

Still prefer our OTA TIVO with an AppleTV attached. Meets our needs and has already paid for itself since we signed up for the lifetime plan years ago. I can stream anything the TIVO can display remotely to my mobile devices or my work computer. Sitting her now watching Ch4 morning news on my monitor (keeps me from having to buy and hang an actual TV at my office). I just hope TIVO does fall behind in this area.

Agree 100%. I just dumped Cox TV and went YTTV and, so far, I'm totally happy. Only loss for me was GameShowNetwork, which I watched *maybe* once or twice a week for nostalgic reruns of some old gameshows. No big loss. As for me, I never watch/watched Hallmark, and the change in monthly cost MORE than paid for an inexpensive UHF attic antenna for all the OTA stations in the area. I'm happy, and I've got about $600/year in my hip pocket to boot. Easy decision.

YouTube TV just announced that beginning Saturday it will drop the Fox Sports Regional Channels (I.e., Fox Sports Oklahoma) due to its inability to come to an agreement for a new contract with Sinclair. Huge bummer as Thunder games are 95% of what we watch on YTTV and have been happy with the service. But we will immediately cancel if a resolution doesn't appear likely and won't think twice about doing so. Definitely a perk of the online streaming wars - they don't force you to be loyal through a contract. Though it sounds like all of the tv providers are fighting the same battle with Sinclair right now so we'll see what happens.
