This is something I am very unfamiliar but it sounds like something we should get behind.

It’s time for Oklahomans — and all fans of cowboy history — to talk up the trails.

Five years into an effort to get the historic Chisholm Trail and Great Western Trail designated as part of the National Trails System, supporters are being asked to comment on the National Park Service’s just completed draft feasibility study and environmental assessment.
The Oklahoma Historical Society has linked to the study and provided a place to submit comments at the top of its main page at OKhistory.org.
The state’s cattle business and persistent cowboy culture captivate foreign tourists, and tourism and historical interest in the trails is international, said Rob Houston, communications coordinator for Visit Enid.

“Cowboys are very popular on the other side of the world,” he said. “The Chisholm Trail runs right through what is now downtown Enid. It’s very important for tourism. To get the National Trail designation would be just wonderful.”

People should take time to comment on the effort at OKHistory.org, said Stacy Cramer, executive director of Duncan’s Chisholm Trail Heritage Center.

“We really need to show the National Park Service that the Chisholm Trail and the Western Trail have supporters,” she said. “It’s a living history, it’s alive and well.”
