Billions of galaxies, each with billions of their own planets and stars...how can there not be other life out there? Maybe not intelligent life but definitely some form of life.

To believe otherwise would be incredibly arrogant. I'll bet money that the universe is teeming with life. And honestly, accepting that there is life out there means the acceptance of the nearly-guaranteed likelihood of intelligent life. Once there is life somewhere there will eventually be intelligent life; the only variable is time.

If there is intelligent life elsewhere I suppose that it is theoretically possible that we are the first beings in the history of the universe to achieve our own level of intelligence, but that would be incredibly unlikely.

Read "Starmaker" by Olaf Stapledon sometime. It was on the reading list of an Astronomy 101 class that I opted to take in order to fulfill one of the Natural Science requirements during my brief time at university.
