I've looked at the Surface Pro 2 and 3, and they're really powerful. Depending on your needs, the 2 might do what you want and they're discounted right now.

I went into the Microsoft Store prepared not to like them after an experience with RT. I was wrong - they are excellent devices. The sale is pretty decent right now, too.

Penny, if you want to go the more "laptoppy" route where it actually unhinges, the Lenovo Yoga series is a pretty good choice if you choose the convertible route..

I had a laptop crash on me years ago and even then they were detachable.

Yes, I would recommend giving the Microsoft Store in Penn Square a try. Just be warned, I've spent some time and that store and have conversed to the employees about cougars so. . . watch you back in there, because I'm not the only young guy around town that likes that. Ok, I kid I kid... ;P

But seriously, they have great products and I purchased the Surface 3 and it has an i7 core with 512gb of data. It was a little pricey, but they have cheaper ones available if you don't want to spend that much. It comes with a keyboard if I remember correctly and works great. Microsoft really did a good job making a tablet that is a true competitor with the iPad.

That being said, I also have an iPad Air, but I don't have a keyboard to go with it, so I can't comment on whether it works better. The iPad has cooler apps, but if I were to recommend one over the other, I'd say a Surface tablet.

If that isn't what you're looking for then sorry, I'm actually not familiar with actual laptops that detach from their base other than the ones that can spin the screen around and fold down.

I'd stick with the pro series in MS Surfaces, the RT version of windows was awful, and if PQ is looking for a laptop replacement, she'd probably want the more powerful Pro. There are still Surface Pro 2's out there.

I'm posting this from an HP 13 Split x2. It's an okay machine my wife bought but didn't like windows 8 enough to use it. (I installed classic shell and like it much better. Also added a 500gb hard drive after quickly filling up the small solid state drive. The 500gb drive resides in the keyboard section.)

I haven't really found the need to detach it. It's pretty compact and much easier to hold and use attached.

Thanks - I actually was looking at that at Best Buy and it got me to wondering about detachables.

I mentioned I went into the Microsoft Store at Penn expecting not to like the Surface Pro because of my experience with the RT. I don't like the RT for any kind of computing. If Penny is looking for something to replace her laptop she should only be looking at the Pro series. They're just Windows 8.1 computers - install any Windows program you want and they're really slick, like them a lot.
