History has shown that when a particular type of crime starts to get publicity, it serves to embolden similar victims to step forward, especially in areas where there is mental trauma involved.

I was just researching something similar on the subject of the Catholic sexual abuse scandal. When the first cases came out in the 80's, over the next couple of decades thousands of victims ended up coming forward. Similarly, child molestation charges in general went through the roof.

Sometimes this can lead to hysteria and give power to those who seek to profit, but more often than not it takes a handful of people or a high-profile case or two to break a logjam where people had been victimized for quite a while.

I've said several times that this may be the silver lining to this awful Adrian Peterson situation as we really need a national discussion on corporal punishment.
