Saw a thread about Dallas being voted as the best skyline in the world and as a "Dallas fanboy", I will say that is utter BS. I do suppose someone might think Little Rock has the best skyline in the world, but come on, I would rank Dallas skyline 2nd or maybe 3rd in TEXAS. Houston has the best, imo, and after it's all said and done, Austin might have a better skyline in less than five years.

I think Seattle or San Fran has the best skylines in the US and I would rank my top 5 in North America as followed

1. Seattle

I'll post more of other cities in different countries and around the US. Please feel free to add your own or make a list. I'll also make a list of my top 5 "smaller" sized cities that have great skylines.

I would definitely put New York, Chicago, Seattle and San Fran ahead of Dallas. That's just the American cities. Went to Toronto this summer and that's in the Seattle/San Fran league, at least.

Yes, I agree with that!
A lot of people don't realize Toronto is the fourth largest city in North America. Only Mexico City, NYC and Los Angeles are bigger.

These two pics are four years apart 2010-2014.

If you're talking about within the city limits, that's true. If you're talking about the metro areas Toronto is surpassed by cities such as Dallas and Houston.

OK, but only barely. According to Wikipedia, the 2011 population of Metro Toronto is 6,054,000. The "Golden Horseshoe" area is larger.
I just have to say, and I know it's not the topic of this thread, we absolutely LOVED Toronto. We mentioned that there were almost no American cities that could compare. And I've been to 47 states. As patriotic as our family is, we - almost apologetically - we're comparing it favorably to the best of America.

Certainly not major competition on a worldwide level, but I've always thought my hometown of Jersey City, NJ has a damn impressive skyline for a city of just 250,000 people. I'm probably (definitely) a bit biased, though. :P Couldn't resist.

My favorite part is the lack of highways. So go live there and don't try and remove highway from cities that already have them and embrace them because one of my favorite parts of Dallas and L.A. is how awesome their highway system is.

I to think Vancouver is an awesome city and can't wait to make it up there one day. I certainly won't be complaining about highways or lack thereof.

Skylines to me are kinda big, ugly creations of man, or an eyesore, especially when seen during the day time. Not so much so when lit up at night, though. Skylines foregrounded with water and boats are more visually interesting, though, as in Chicago's.

Akron was the rubber capital, while Toledo was the glass capital. They both have museums unlike anything Oklahoma has, sadly...

Not to get away from skylines in a thread about skylines, but both are great examples of the rich industrial legacy that are enduring. Ohio hits way above its weight as a civilization because it grew during the Gilded Age.

The one that's really surprised me is Columbus, actually. Cbus is at least the same urban scale as Denver or Kansas City, but remains the largest city that stubbornly refuses mass transit and people have a huge little man syndrome. While I was up in Cleveland for two years, I only ever heard about Columbus as "Cowtown" and not unlike the rest of "downstate" in being completely uncivilized. Or at least that was "Ohio geography according to Clevelanders."

Sorry PluPan, either you added the question after I replied or I glossed over it. That's Frank Gehry's building on Case's campus. The deal with University Circle is every major starchitect is required to contribute their worst building, whether it be Gehry, Pelli, Foster, Breuer, Vinoly, etc etc...

tOSU is consolidated entirely in inner NW Columbus, with 60,000+ students crammed just 3 miles NW of downtown. And maybe half of them have cars, and it's a huge mess - but it's no worse than the 100,000 people who work in DT Cbus. They've nearly built a streetcar linking downtown and tOSU several times, but it's become quite the Greek tragedy. Last time it was the mayor's pet project, so the council opposed it just to spite him (what does that remind you of?)..

New Look: 99 Hudson Street (http://newyorkyimby.com/2015/01/new-look-the-990-foot-99-hudson-street-new-jerseys-future-tallest-building.html)

http://newyorkyimby.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/99-Hudson-Street-1.jpg

New 990-foot, 95 story residential tower (condos) announced, dwarfing the Goldman Sachs building which was, if I can get this straight, the tallest building in the nation that was in a city other than the respective metro area's largest city (phew). Blew that record out of the water.

And to make matters worse (and trying hard not to beat a dead horse too much...), they're wrapping the entire base of the building around the parking garage, since back home building towers on top of the parking garage is considered a failure. Imagine we could ever be so lucky... Sigh.

Looking for opinion here so no right or wrong answers. Who here believes that a city's iconic tower has to be in the CBD? The reason I ask is because my wife is from Houston, and I asked her what building in Houston lets people know they are in Houston. Her answer was Williams (formally Transco), which is in the Galleria area. Thought that was pretty interesting. I thought she would have said Wells Fargo or Bank of America.

Office towers that are truly iconic tend to be downtown since most office towers are in downtowns, but many iconic structures are not: the Eiffel tower, the Statue of Liberty, Washington Monument, St Paul's in London, Guggenheim museum in NYC, are not downtown but are iconic. The iconic commercial buildings I can think of are downtown: Transamerica tower in SF, Chrysler and Empire State, the Peachtree Hotel in Atlanta (IMO it is iconic), Sears tower in Chicago. Not sure I would put the Transco tower as iconic, but it is certainly striking and identifiable in Houston. To me it doesn't quite rise to the lofty level of iconic.

When I see a round tower, I think of Capitol Records in LA; it was a symbol for L.A. for years. Holiday Inn also had several round tower hotels, but I assume they copied the design from Capitol Records. Chicago has the twin round tower parking garages. Not sure who was first with a round tower, Capitol Records or Holiday Inn or elsewhere (Pisa, Italy?)

I think the Bank of CA tower in downtown LA with its circle-in-a-square design is very striking and could be an iconic building for LA now.

Williams Tower is one of my favorite skyscrapers in Houston. It is memorable because of how tall it is for not being in a CBD and how it towers so far above everything around it. Uptown Houston truly is an impressive place. However if I was to name a skyscraper I consider synonymous with the city it's 700 Louisiana.

I think the Bank of CA tower in downtown LA with its circle-in-a-square design is very striking and could be an iconic building for LA now.

I assume you are talking about US Bank Tower or the proper name for it, Library Tower? I agree, that is LA's iconic building.

The Transbay tower design in San Francisco looks a little like Devon to me. It is going to be a taller at 1070 feet but not as interesting as Devon.

The iconic tower doesn't always have to be the tallest. San Francisco is a perfect example of that. I don't know how anybody could dispute that the TransAmerica Pyramid is San Francisco's iconic tower.
