Interactive Map Shows The Truth About Who's Not Vaccinating Kids In LA (http://io9.com/interactive-map-shows-the-truth-about-whos-not-vaccinat-1633160079)

A whooping cough epidemic is sweeping across California—and 94% of the cases involve children and infants, for whom the illness can be fatal. Low vaccination rates are responsible for the outbreak. But, surprisingly, it's the most affluent, educated parents who are opting out of immunization programs.

This anti-vaccination trend is so completely foolish.

I think this trend is starting to die out as people get more educated and there are more outbreaks of age-old diseases.

The tea party anti science, anti facts, anti government everything is about to boomerang big time. Let people see their kids dying because of some political ignorance and you will see people flee their cause quickly. Maybe someday they might understand the issues of global warming too.

As irritated as I get by the tea party crowd you can't put the all the blame on them for this idiotic trend. This crosses political boundaries. Plenty of moderates and liberals have all jumped on this bandwagon.

Meningitis and tetanus make whooping cough look like a walk in the park. I've seen both and they're not pretty. You have to be in lala land to think it can't happen to your child.

If I were a Darwinist (or a Saganite) I might suggest that this is Natural Selection in Action.
Yet I am not. So I won't.
(p.s.: I'm not a roamin' catholic nor no scientologist neither. I signed up for my flu shot this year. So I guess I ain't Christian Seancetist.)

Probably, lining up with the rest of the kids to get the Polio Vaccine and, later, a sugar cube or two (back in the 50's) made me a believer.

Oh! And on account of having the Flu Vaccine last season, I didn't even get a "cold" last winter!

(the bad side effect of the vaccine is that it makes you remember why you did it)

Still . . . don't all those TV ads about cures, involving side-effects worse than the perceived malady itself, invite questions that can't be answered? Especially those directed toward age-old/old-age people? (I bought into one of those Viagra ads the first time I saw it and haven't yet called a physician to address my . . . It is impossible to miss the point with the use of the word Derpers.
That, derpers, is the mother-lode of comedy roots.
Derpers don't miss . . . Never.

Now: Make that concept into a slogan in favor of vaccination.
On my desk by next Wednesday. Throw some EbolaFear into it. And Asteroids.
Plus that volcano shock wave vid stuff from the boaters.

Get Vaccinated . . . or else . . . THIS MIGHT HAPPEN! . . . but it will probably only be this . . . . whimper(from malady) die.

Did I forget to mention do it in a "Spanish" version including ever dialect of every language currently spoken in Greater Los Angeles?
sorry.

The worst part of the trend is it doesn't just affect the people who don't vaccinate, it also compromises our herd immunity. There are people who really actually cannot be vaccinated for real actual medical reasons, and the herd immunity that is supposed to keep them safe is being ruined by idiots.

Jenny McCarthy was a key spokesperson for the anti-vax movement, as she attributed her child's autism to vaccinations.

But any link between autism and immunizations has been completely refuted in many studies now, and of course McCarthy is hardly the sharpest knife in the drawer.

It seems the anti-vax hysteria has started to die down but the ramifications will be felt for quite some time.

More pediatricians need to fire patients that do not vaccinate. The exemption that is offered to parents of school going kids needs to be eliminated as well. If you do not want to vaccinate your kids, fine, home school them.

I have never gotten a straight story on her son...she claims the MMR shot gave him autism but he's been healthy for years. A big reason she was booted off the View is because people were very turned off by her holier than thou views on vaccination, among other things.

Also, I don't mind some PDA, but I had to change the channel the other day when she was practically eating Donnie Wahlberg's face.

Anybody who takes Jenny McCarthy as an expert on anything deserves to follow the advice she gives. Why we keep mistaking celebrity for authority is beyond me. Expert after expert can testify what they know according to scientific study and observation, but Brad Pitt, or Lady GaGa says something and people believe. So if all the kids who are vaccinated are so well protected why worry about the ones who aren't? Not your problem. If the shots work then you shouldn't be afraid.

Also, children are injured and killed by vaxing. But that's just collateral damage, right? Unless it's yours.

Didn't mean to spoil your little pro vax party with some derp logic. Proceed.

So it's child abuse to beat your child, but it's fine to ignore the overwhelming scientific and visible evidence of vaccine effectiveness and refuse to vaccinate an innocent child who has no voice in the decision? Risking mental retardation, loss of limbs, loss of hearing or vision, paralysis and death by withholding vaccinations is child neglect/abuse to me.

It's too bad it's a HIPAA violation to show you videos of a few kids who "survived" meningitis that we can prevent with an immunization.

So, have you noticed how many children grow up crippled because of polio these days? Or are stillborn because of congenital rubella? Or all the other childhood illnesses that used to kill children in the millions?

Not many, huh. My mother had polio, and I did not. That is the miracle of vaccinations, and the anti-vax movement is trying to undo a hundred years of children not dying.

Because some of us care about society in general, not just our own families.

Yes, you have a very very small number of children who can become sick, or possibly even die, from vaccinations. When I was a baby I was in a car accident. My mom was holding me, I was not in a car seat. I suffered a few minor scratches. The back of the car, where the baby car seat was, was destroyed. Statistically you're far, far safer having your baby in the baby seat than you are holding them in your lap. Doesn't mean people can't find that one exception.

yeah... the department of health tracks adverse events from vaccinations in vaers. for giggles, i downloaded the data from 2013. of all of the people vaccinated in the united states in 2013, there were 28 deaths... that's not just children but everybody. furthermore, this includes every adverse event reported after an individual is vaccinated... so all 28 of those deaths may not have been a direct result of vaccination. bottom line, risk of a serious adverse event is not statistically significant. -M

ONE OF US, ONE OF US, ONE OF US!) and please quote more stats, THAT will change minds (28 dead humans is insignificant to you, nice.) And how does someone inject a seatbelt into their body exactly? I watched Nova on PBS yesterday. It was about Vaccines and the anti-vaccine crowd.

The show opened showing a 8 week old baby who came down with Whooping Cough just days before he would have received his first DTAP shot. Watching him coughing and struggling to breathe was heartbreaking.

They interviewed a pediatrician in OKC, who specialized in the treatment of adolescents, about the HPV vaccine and showed her talking to a woman who was afraid if she gave the HPV vaccine to her daughter it would encourage her to be promiscuous. (smh) Then, they interviewed another OKC woman who's daughter died at age 37 from cervical cancer.

I try to be respectful of other people's point of view, but these anti-vaccine folks baffle me. And the woman who is willing to put her daughter at risk for cervical cancer? Lady, you your priorities all messed up!

Yes, you were lucky you didn't get polio. Pre-vaccine, many people weren't so lucky. And I'm not a nurse, I'm a pediatrician who has cared for hundreds of kids with meningitis, seen babies die of whooping cough, seen people develop chronic liver disease from hepatitis. In 2012 there were 20 deaths from pertussis. Had more children been unimmunized, those meningitis. Prior to vaccination, the most common type of meningitis occurred in > 1:1000 children the ages of 0 and 5. Many of those children list their hearing, developed mental retardation or died. In communities with high vaccination rates that risk falls to 1:50,000. Even the children of anti-vax goofballs benefit from herd immunity. Please stop trolling on subjects in which you are inadequately educated.
