Very excited for this. The map really makes clear how the line between Auto Alley and Midtown get blurrier by the month.

10th is becoming the Main Street of Midtown.

At the far west end you have LIFT, then St. Anthony with the expansion, Plaza Court, Fassler Hall / Dust Bowl, R & J, Pop-up Shops, Bleu Garten, Packard's, Broadway 10 Chophouse, more retail and restaurants for 1101 and 1100 N. Broadway, Indian Motorcyles and on the far east end GE Global Research Center.

I love this place already.

I particularly love that OKC is getting more local, intimate places. Ludivine, WSKY and Skinny Slim's have shown the way and Sidecar, Slaughter's Hall and this project will be three more in this smaller-is-better approach.

Props to them for having an actual website, *and* a menu on said website (Hillbilly needs to take note)!!! Probably won't be going there often 'cos of the prices (it'll be in the Ludivine, Red, Museum Cafe type of places rotation, which is about once a year for them), but looks like good food.

The drink menu looks great. If they have a decent bar tender,a $6 old fashioned is a sweet deal.

I'm also curious how literal the interpretation of the vintage menu items will be.

Ya, klnda surprised at the little bit higher than I thought food prices but the drink prices are much lower than I would have guessed. So I guess it all balances out...

Pete
09-10-2014, 03:24 PM
The prices appear to be a little on the high side but all the entrees include one side and the drinks ($5 champagne & wine by the glass! $2.10 for a Miller draft!) are down-right cheap.

So, a very nice dinner with a drink would come in right around $20 per person. That's pretty darn good.

I hung out with Russ some, way back in the day. In high School it was pretty much a mix of Heritage Hall and McGuiness kids, partying like rock stars. There would be 30-40 people at a house party, and Russ would be out back....messing with a grill. Cooking up crazy **** for all the drunkards to eat. You wouldn't think that Zuchini with Paprika is all that tastey...but, the way Russ cooked it up. It was so good. Or maybe it was the alcohol? Who knows? Either way, I'm excited to see this guy have the success he has. I already love Ludivine, but this place will be just as unique.

Had dinner at R&J last night. The main dishes were great, good flavors, nice portion sizes (not too big, not too small). The drinks were great and very inexpensive. The bad: the side dishes, my mac n' cheese and my wife's potato, were cold. Not just "not hot". Cold. Drinks took FOREVER to come out, I ordered my second before we got our food and they brought it out with our check 40 min later. They didn't take anything off our bill either, but I didn't make a stink about it, mostly because I couldn't find anyone to talk to about it. Overall, it has a lot of potential, and we'll go back, but I'd give them some time to get into a groove. If it's like this in a few weeks, I'll go looking for the manager, for sure.

Décor was cool, the pics in this thread show it pretty well. We sat on the patio, and it was really nice. You could tell they had just finished painting the furniture, as it was still damp/ rubbing off in some places. It's very small, but it keeps it intimate. Honestly, I'm usually ok with a couple service hiccups early on, but as for the food, these are experienced restaurateurs. It should have been spot on. I got a lobster roll, it was very good, wife got the croque, which was also very good.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the note about the service; no place, no matter how experienced the restaurateurs (this is only their second restaurant,) is going to get it "spot on" during their first night of service, especially when it coincides with something as immense as H&8th. I'm going to assume that they were undoubtedly slammed, and that everyone was experiencing the same issues that your party was. There's a reason that professional food critics often go to a restaurant on no less than three separate occasions before writing a review, and none of them are usually within the first couple of weeks of service: it's because they know that those first couple/few weeks of a restaurant's operations are not representative of what service at that restaurant will actually be like once the initial craziness dies down.

I've got a few friends that work at R&J's, and I've told them that I won't even be coming in until a month is passed, because I know that's when service will be more even-keeled.

The service on the night that I went was atrocious and absolutely flabbergasting. The place is super super small and was by no means packed. There were 2 bartenders and at least 1 server if not 2, plus managers. We sat around for, and this is not an exaggerated number, 30-45 minutes before getting a round of drinks, which we incidentally had to order twice...

There couldn't have been 40 people on the premises and nobody was eating. It was as if they had to go back to the 50s to get the ingredients. These resembled a full on choke rather than hiccups.

I'd love to hear the explanation as to why, but I'm gonna tell you now, there wouldn't be an acceptable one.

I've now had an after-work beer there and a lunch (beef stroganoff). Both times the service was friendly and prompt. The Old Style was cold and bubbly and the stroganoff (and cocktail weenies) were hot and tasty. The interior was as if the bar at Junior's and the HiLo had a baby. Except for the missing odor of stale cigarette smoke, it could have been there for 50 years. It is a hole-in-the-wall in the best possible way (as opposed to a dive bar, which it most certainly is NOT). So far, I'm a total fanboy.

I really like The Concept. And The Sign(age).
I really don't like the experiencial takes (of so-called customers) on Day One.
Cut 'em some slack. Fer cryin' out loud . . . Geez.

The day that I pay $16 for Mac and Cheese, slowly served, cold, is the day that I walk on the ambiance.

However: Unless it is German Potato Salad, potato salad is best served cold.
So they nailed it on that one . . . I guess.

All kidding aside: This reminds me of Olympic Lanes (in Boulder, CO, c. '68) except with haute (as compared to hot) cuisine.
Apparently . . . New-Age Cooking Reconstructors of the Past need to watch more Walt Disney films. (just kidding)

The one thing I know for sure:
I want to visit this place when the Hipster Swarm has migrated.
For Real.

(to add a little depth and texture to what hits the plate: I'm watching one of Rick Bayless' productions on how to make homemade Mole. not that I will ever make what he's doing . . . just to 'cred-up' my personal concerns with "fine dining" as compared to "fast food". =)

Went last night for dinner and drinks. I was impressed with the decor and the ambiance. Very well done. I had the chicken and dumplings. Not at all what I expected, but very good. My friend had the shrimp and hushpuppies and liked it as well. I was disappointed by the service - inattentive and a bit slow, especially for such a small place. Our drink order was complete and sitting on the bar for about 5 minutes - the waiter walked past it several times and did other things before finally bringing it to us. It was bad enough that I almost got up and grabbed them myself. One last gripe - the upcharge for call liquors is insanely high. My friend had a martini (on the menu for $6.70) and asked for Absolut. The upcharge was $5! I had a manhattan - menu price $5.50 and the upcharge for Bulleit rye was $4. I don't mind paying a bit more for call liquor, but nearly double is too much. The tab for an entree, an app and 5 cocktails was $92.

All in all, I enjoyed the visit, but they have some kinks to iron out. I'll go back, but I'll drink house liquor for sure.

I'm trying it out Saturday. If it sucks, I will rip them mercilessly here. I really am looking forward to the experience and expect good food and service. Not too much to expect. If it were my restaurant and I poured my money and heart into it, I would fight like hell to ensure it's as good as it possibly can be. I don't understand the "screw you, what kind of service are you expecting?" hipster bull****. Yes, I expect good food and service, even if your restaurant is a retro, semi-ironic joint.

Again, I look forward to a great meal, cool ambiance, and friendly, at-least-mildly-attentive, service.

I walked in around 6:30 last night and it was slammed so we went elsewhere. Definiely a positive sign for R and J, just too bad it's not a little bigger (though I know that's the vibe they're going for). Glad to hear the service was good though, I'll have to make another attempt next week.

After having several friends involved in starting new restaurants, it's pretty difficult for me to be too hard on service within the first month or so of opening. It really does take a few weeks to iron the kinks out. If I go into a brand new restaurant, I give them a pass on sub-par service as long as it seems like they're trying and are generally courteous about it. After a month or two though, I definitely expecting things to be running smoothly.
