My grandmother went to high school with Roy Orbison. They were pretty close friends.

I envy her. We had some talent in my high school, but none at his level.

He is definitely one of the greatest voices. There have been many distinctive voices from previous eras of music that we just don't seem to see nowadays. Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, Hank, Patsy Cline, Sinatra to name a few.

I agree that those are all unique but no generation has a market on unique or great voices. New ones come along all of the time.

I don't disagree but curious who you think the great voices are now? There are three that I can think of Nora Jones, Harry Connick Jr, and Tracy Chapman. I am sure there are more similar to you can never think of great songs to put on play list and then later you hear on the radio and go...damn, I forgot that one. Let me qualify my previous statement as when I am saying great voices, I mean distinctive unique voices that stand out different from the crowd as there are a lot of vocalists that are great singers but there isn't anything distinctive about them

It depends on what genre of music you are talking about. A couple that come quickly to mind are Reba McIntyre and Celine Dion. I would also add Kristin Chenoweth to that group.
