But I thought Garin was leaving for good? Oh wait...

At this thread is interesting and thought provoking and not just a link to the Blaze with no additional input. :)

Though it is pretty depressing to look at the reality being displayed in these images.

I have a buddy who is always talking about our education system and he has posted this on Facebook a couple times. I don't like it personally. He's talking mainly about K-12, and K-12 is there to give everybody a good general baseline knowledge on a variety of subjects. This helps kids figure out what they like and what they're good at. How would you ever know what you liked or what you are good at if you don't dabble in a lot of different subjects? Then once you get to HS you even have the chance to take electives in things that interest you, so everyone ISN'T taking the exact same courses. Then in college you can major in whatever you want. I just don't understand what is so wrong with that.

But I don't want to get this thread off topic, I just wanted to throw that out there. Continue. :backtotop

But I don't want to get this thread off topic, I just wanted to throw that out there. Continue. :backtotopMy beef is with standardized testing which is what it seems this graphic is amounting to. They're taking kids and suppressing their potential by teaching them facts like the exact structure of an atom..... ok, now that is cool and all, if you're going to become a nuclear engineer or a physicist, but lets think a minute- how many jobs out there take the knowledge of an the structural make up of an atom to complete? Not very many. So we teach students facts like that, then give a sheet of paper with a bunch of bubbles and numbers and say here, mark what you've learned. We're teaching people to memorize things for a short period of time; the majority of those people won't even remember how an atom is made by the time they hit college(I know how they are made up because I am interested in physics, but the majority of people aren't).

We need to be teaching our students how to learn. We need to pay our teachers better and make sure we get good teachers who WANT to educate our future with a passion. We need to develop basic functioning skills for students in elementary and teach them the fundamentals of life, but making sure we don't over do it by giving them too much to remember to the point where they don't really care or are interested and just remember it for the time being to make good grades. We can then ask our students what interests them and work with them. Will they change their mind? Sure; I have(at one point I wanted to become a meteorologist more than anything).

Also, it isn't just the fault of the teachers or the parents that is to blame for a failing student, it takes two to tango and in this case, takes both parties to ensure the success of our future generation. This is all just my opinion though on how to better educate our students and if anyone has a better idea, please let your voice be heard.

Sorry, but I think that's pretty disrespectful to people of faith and pretty uncalled for. Demoting the worship of the creator to a platitude is kind of dismissive. And I say that coming from the belief system that, roughly, nature IS God. No skin off my nose if people want to see god in their own way. We've seen lots of pro earth, pro animal, pro environment engage in pretty awful behavior. Theology doesn't make someone a good person - attacking someone else's theology isn't all that nice, either.

My dad, as he got older, became much more spiritual, kind, thoughtful, etc. His Christian faith was a source of comfort and inspiration to him. And yet, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who was more devoted to animals, nature and environmental causes. He was on a very fixed income but still donated, regularly, to environmental causes. He saw no conflict between that or his faith, in fact, he felt one inspired the other. You're a sweetheart, Panda, but that post touched a nerve - maybe because Daddy would have been 83, today. I just think this suggested a conflict that doesn't necessarily exist and demeaned the truly lovely way belief in a creator makes many people feel called upon to be good stewards of the earth and who see god in all living creatures.

Sorry, but I think that's pretty disrespectful to people of faith and pretty uncalled for.Honestly, I didn't think it would offend anyone. I believe in higher power and really haven't made up my mind if I believe in any religion yet, maybe one day.

As for that picture, if people put as much effort into volunteering to clean up trash and donate money to charities that prevented deforestation, cleaning up contaminated environments, and trying to stop it in the first place instead of donating to churches, this planet would be so much better. It is a damn shame what we do to something that supports us. This is planet is here and feeds us; THAT, is proof. That is what I think this picture was getting at.

Funny hypocrisy on my part as I donated 3 dollars to a church today, so I'm not trying to hid anything. Just pointing out that obvious. This is not an attack, it is truth. I want people to believe in what they want to believe in. If someone comes up to me and says they believe in god and wants to become a preacher, I'll support them. If someone comes up to me and says I am a satanist and I want to build a statue of satan on the capitol, I'll say go for it. If someone comes up to me and say they want to strap a bomb to their chest and kill a bunch of people to have seven virgins waiting for them on the other side, I'll recommend a doctor and likely contact the authorities.

Anyhow, I'm sorry I offended you with this post as that was NOT my intention. To anyone else who finds this offensive, I do apologize. Penny, I'm sure your father was great man who did great things, this post was not meant to stereo type religions and generalize it, but maybe it did and perhaps I should've thought about it a little more before I posted.
