Fox thinks it might have something to do with the metric system.

The Gimli Glider incident stemmed directly from a metric/imperial mixup. However it ended well, thanks to incredible piloting and an unblievable amount of luck. (If the reference mystifies you, Google for Gimli; it was a feature on Smithsonian Channel within the past month.)

If a picture is worth a thousand words . . .
Then moving pictures with sound might be worth two-thousand one . . .

Whatever you do, don't say anything about The Disappearing Battleship c/o Tesla.
Or anything involving precedents as compared to presidents. =)
Or Nick Cage.

ps: don't open this link. it could explain everything.
and if you ignore the warning, don't buy the book
or check it out from your local library.

You mean this Gimli?

I seriously doubt the pilots and ground crew didn't understand metric, but I suppose anything is possible. From what I could find the Gimli was due in part to " Fuel loading was miscalculated due to a misunderstanding of the recently adopted metric system which replaced the imperial system." Again I doubt that's the case here or what the FOX reporter was referring to.

It's quite possible the reporter saw (and remembered portions of) the Smithsonian feature but failed to recognize how dissimilar the cases are.

There was reportedly terrible weather in the area at the time of the accident and the pilot called into ATC to ask for a divert to a higher elevation around it. The plane disappeared off of radar about three minutes after that. Is it not at all probable that weather was a contributing factor? I mean, Occam's Razor and all that.

After spotting debris you have to start assuming your going to find bodies. The news outlet should have been more careful and not had live shots.
