Legalization of marijuana is just around the corner for most states. As usual, if Oklahoma's not the first then we will be one of the last.

Is there a lesson here to be learn? Being the last does give you an advantage; you can weigh the mistakes and misfortunes of your colleagues.

How did being last or one of the last to repeal alcohol prohibition benefit the state? What advantages did we gain?

Good point Jersey Boss! I take it that by the looks of your pic, you're ready for a joint?

Alcohol prohibition?

Seriously, there were no real advantages. Can say that liquor by the drink was better than brown bagging; walking into an establishment and having the clubs, bars & taverns sell your alcohol back to you in a mixed drink form. Many clubs, bars & taverns started labeling bottles and putting people name's on them. They weren't following the rules; some clubs tried having you sign a waiver allowing them to purchase liquor on your behalf.

It was more dangerous to put that person on the road leaving an establishment with a bottle of liquor which had already been opened and served.

Governor J. Howard Edmondson in the 50s dried up the state right before a prohibition election to let the people know what it was going to be like without alcohol; that was a brilliant move by Governor Edmondson.

Alcohol is legal whereas, marijuana is currently illegal. I think it's safe to say that Oklahoma shouldn't be so quick to hop on the bandwagon.

The point was that while the majority of the nation repealed prohibition in the 30's, Oklahoma was imprisoning people for this up until 1959. It was a waste of resources that was driven by a minority of citizens who had outsized influence. The same could be said today with the private prison lobby, and others who profit from the current mindset. While not saying Oklahoma should be in the front of this trend, maybe being one of the last isn't so good either.

Say, that avatar you use is not an endorsement of cocaine or ecstasy is it?

LMAO, Good comeback. Gotta love it!

:ot:

You mentioned the private prison lobby; they are definitely taking advantage of the overcrowded Oklahoma prison system. We have one of the worst incarceration rates and probably #1 in the U.S. for incarcerating women.

"Oklahoma continues to be ranked as the state with the HIGHEST female incarceration rates in the U.S." Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women - Oklahoma Women Incarcerated (http://www.ok.gov/ocsw/Issues/Oklahoma_Women_Incarcerated/index.html) Is this where we want to be?
