Does anyone know how to get eye stains off white haired dogs? I have an 11 week old westie pup with some staining under her eyes. I have tried some wipes from the pet store but so far they are not doing much. I'm giving her distilled water to drink and food with no corn, wheat or soy. I've heard of angel eyes but I think that has some sort of antibiotic in it that may not be good for her. Any ideas?

Ask your vet or future groomer.

Try adding some vinegar, a 1/2 teaspoon or so per quart, to your dogs
water. If it works then the acids your pet is secreting is too high.
Vinegar is a base which will neutralize the acids. Ask your vet if this
doesn't work.

I read this some time ago. Vinegar won't harm your pet.

I've heard this as well.

I believe it's a ph problem, but I'm not a veterinarian, just a former
science teacher. However, being a vet or a science teacher doesn't
equate to a know it all frame of mind.

Just FTI, vinegar is a very dilute solution of acetic acid, not a base. Dump a spoonful of baking soda (an actual base) into a cup of it to verify...

EDIT: Dunno about dogs, but tear stains are a common problem with Persian cats and related breeds such as Exotic Shorthairs. The usual recommendation is to wash their faces daily. Established stains don't go away immediately, but daily washing prevents their renewal and they eventually fade...

What was I thinking? Of course it's an acid. The vinegar increases
the acidity and helps prevent the growth of micro organisms.

I found the article. It also suggests lemon juice.

Thanks for the help. I will try the vinegar, the only question I have is how much would you put in a gallon of water?

The article doesn't say. I was looking at my dog's bowl and it's about
a quart. Maybe 2 teaspoons.
