Population density is hard to understand without a point of reference. This map makes it easier by representing populations of other places using areas we're much more familiar with.

This is a map of the highest paid public employees by state. If you're not already a football coach, you're making way less money than you could be.

The red represents the countries with McDonald's. McDonald's may have gotten farther than the British. One things for sure, wherever you go, a packet of golden fries is never very far away.

This is a map of every place in the world that the British have invaded, in pink. Only 22 countries were left out. That's impressive considering Great Britain itself is nearly too small to see on this map!

What countries give mothers time off to bond with their babies? Nearly every country in the world. The United States is nearly the only holdout, along with Suriname, Liberia and Papua New Guinea.

Chinese is a language full of colorful dialects. This map of Europe shows the literal translation of Chinese names for those countries. West Classtooth sounds like a bizarre place to visit.

The red regions are countries that are not on the metric system. Seriously, the metric system makes so much sense, why can't we just suck it up and switch over?

This map shows common pirate routes around the world so you know where to steer clear on your next fantastic voyage. The pink areas are the most dangerous; the West African coast and Indonesian waters are pirate-central!

As it turns out, the likelihood that you'll get struck by lightning depends a lot on where you live. The yellow areas see the most lightning strikes per square kilometer, white sees the least. For some reason, those bolts really seem to like central Africa.

The orientation of the modern map is completely arbitrary. It all depends on where you're standing when you make the map. This is what the world map would look like if the orientation was reversed. And just like that Australia is in the center of the world!

The world has roughly 7 billion people, and each color on this map represents a part of the world where 1 billion people reside. Red and orange, which contain China and India, are pretty tightly packed!

This map tracks the movement of economic centers in the world since 1 AD. Follow the arrows to see where the wealth is flowing. It's funny how cyclical things are. First money left the East and now it looks like it's headed back.

Not everyone is obsessed with coffee. This is a map of annual coffee consumption per capita around the world; the darker colors drink more coffee. It's surprising that people in Africa, where a lot of coffee beans are grown, drinks almost no coffee. What we want to know is how people in Greenland stay awake.

I love these kinds of maps!

Here's one I made trying to put into perspective how densely populated India and China are.
In red is India and green is China.
In darker red are the Indian states Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and a combined population of 304 million (US pop. is ~317 million) crammed into an area just slightly bigger than New Mexico, or about twice as big as Oklahoma.
In darker green are the Chinese provinces Shandong, Henan, Hebei, and the Chinese municipalities Beijing and Tianjin. Their combined population is 296 million in an area about the size of Colorado and Wyoming combined.

It absolutely blows my mind that there are areas in the world that can fit the population of the US into an area of a couple of our states!

Here's Manhattan overlayed onto Oklahoma City. Manhattan has a population of a little over 1.6 million in 23 square miles.
OKC has an urban population (not including Norman but including Edmond) of about 865,000 in 411 square miles.

This is pretty interesting to see. OKC really should never have built highway loops and condensed considerably. Too late now.

If I was him, I'd avoid Russia and Greenland, as those are going to hurt! :)

That map about the metric system is pretty appalling. I remember Jim Carter making a big push when I was in school but he didn't try hard enough.

In fairness, it's hard to find anything in this country without a corresponding metric measurement.

I'm not sure it is accurate either (or at a minimum they should define 'using'). The UK uses metric for temperature but distance is measured in miles/yards and speed in mph. Meanwhile, in my garage right now are metric sockets and wrenches that fit bolts and nuts I use. I-19 in Arizona has most signs in metric.

The world 14,000 years ago

Graphic designer Martin Vargic has created this map of our world as it looked during the peak of the last glaciation in the late Pleistocene, using the best available geological knowledge.

Ice sheets cover large chunks of the Boreal regions, and spread outwards from the globe's tall mountain ranges. Alpine glaciers and the Patagonian, Greenland and Antarctic ice caps are some of the pitiful remnants of a once mighty cryosphere. Since the ice left, many of these lands have been steadily rising inch by inch over the millennia as the mantle adjusts to the removal of their vast weight.

The map also shows the expanded coastlines due to the roughly lower sea level, and the land bridges that united North America and Asia, the British Isles to the mainland of Europe. Our current oceans are around 120 metres higher than 14,000 years ago, and roughly another 60-80m resides in the remaining land bound ice.

Geologists contributed data on the location of now vanished lakes, sea levels and the size of the ice sheets in the last couple of millennia before the large scale meltdown kicked in. Other related maps cover the two polar regions and more detailed regional comparison charts with the present. Current political borders have been included, along with major cities so that people can assess how much their home area has changed.
