Josh,

I apologize if my posts last night offended you. It is never my intention to make enemies anywhere I go, especially on here. I just felt like any response I gave was awarded with a snarky personal remark back about the opinions I viewed. I was also a few beers in when I came back on and saw your replies, so that may have contributed to my annoyance.

I also wanted to clarify why I brought up SA's history and demographics. I probably didn't lay it out as clearly as I should have from the beginning. My entire point was that from a young age (grade school) children learn about the Alamo and all the Spanish/Mexican history that SA has in it's past. Because of this I think SA is unfairly labeled as being a very Hispanic-oriented city. My point in bringing up the demographics was that if someone who has never actually been to SA looks at those, they're going to only reinforce to themselves that their stereotype is correct. In their mind, not only does SA have a lot of Spanish/Mexican history but they also have a heavy concentration of people who come from Hispanic families, so the city must still revolve mainly around Spanish/Mexican culture. That is all I was ever trying to say.

Hopefully that is a little clearer. I never meant to say anything negative about San Antonio or the people who live there. I have only been their once, and I enjoyed it, but I never really got to leave the DT area by the riverwalk and convention center. I was only trying to explain the perception of SA I get from people who have never actually been there.

Despite the lack of a strong skyline, San Antonio is excellent at street level and has a very strong sense of place. It would be cool if they were to get a tower or two to make their skyline more recognizable.

That's it right there......nothing to distinct with their skyline. Maybe some day that'll change.

They have a pretty substantial building proposed. It's not huge, but it's nice for San Antonio.

The posts in the Okc boom thread were merged into your San Antonio thread.

I like what you're doing though with showing off San Antonio. UrbanNerbraska does the same with Lincoln & Omaha & Spartan does it with Cleveland & I've considered doing one on Atlanta, but it'd take forever since Atlanta is huge & something new is announced every other day, literally.

HA! I hear you with the Atlanta thing. I thought about doing the same thing with Dallas as I keep up with their development very closely and they literally have a HQ relocation or some massive development announced like every week. Literally since the Stage Center Announcement their has already been 2 30 story buildings proposed and a new high-rise residential tower is in the works in Uptown. Crazy stuff. It'd take forever to type down what is already going on and by the time I would be done, there would 20 more projects to write about lol

nice pics of San Antonio. Keep 'em coming!

I have never been but it looks like a nice place if a bit of a tourist trap that happens to be a major city. Does appear to be an inland San Diego.

He needs something to fill airtime, where it is better to ask forgiveness every once in a while verses being boring all the time; he has joked on multiple occasions about being from Birmingham, Alabama he can't really say to much about any other cities/states depending on which one he put his foot in his mouth over.

San Antonio is simply overshadowed by Austin and doesn't get as much love from the media. You are right though. Personally, I think San Antonio has much better infrastructure than Austin and could be a much larger city without growth being choked off.

What better infrastructure does SA have?

Spartan

By prominent downtown core, do you mean specifically the skyline?

Because aside from that one trivial aspect, downtown San Antonio is probably the most active downtown in Texas. From workers to tourists to locals. They're all downtown, from sunrise to sunset and longer.

Also, this may not be known here, but in the last two years, nearly 2,000 housing units have been added to the urban core and nearly 1,000 units are under construction or proposed now.

There is also a yet to be proposed 800 unit mixed-use development (multiple towers) planned for the Pearl area. The developers have talked about it but have yet to officially "propose" it.

Then there's the over 1 billion dollars in public investment currently going on in downtown, right now.

These four projects are planned or under construction:

VIA Modern Streetcar (http://ww4.hdnux.com/photos/23/55/26/5166471/0/622x350.jpg) ($280 million)
Hemisfair Park redevelopment (http://www.hemisfair.org/pdfs/2012-06-18_Hemisfair_Framework_and_Master_Plan.pdf) (180 million)
San Pedro Creek redevelopment (http://extras.mysanantonio.com/pdf/SPC_condensed_images.ppt) (200 million)
San Antonio Convention Center expansion (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/downtown/wp-content/blogs.dir/667/files/renderings-of-the-convention-center-expansion/ccexpand3.jpg) (350 million)

The VIA streetcar will be up and running by 2017.

The Hemisfair redevelopment will add 20-acres of park land to downtown as well as turn a seldom used area into a mxed-use neighborhood.

The San Pedro Creek redevelopment will basically give downtown San Antonio two "Riverwalks", this one on the west side of downtown. The actual Riverwalk was expanded two miles to the north, this extension is called the Museum Reach (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=museum+reach+san+antonio).

I could also include the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts (http://lmnarchitects.com/assets/work/tobin_center_for_the_performing_arts/images/1hi.jpg), which is currently under construction with a fall 2014 opening planned. That cost $210 million.

Also, it was announced yesterday that H&M, PF Chang's, Yardhouse, Margaritaville and more are adding locations to downtown. Are part of the redevelopment of the Joske's building, which will also see a mixed-use tower component.

Okay, great. That's not out of line with development in downtown OKC, and wouldn't compare very favorably to downtown Cleveland. Stick to bragging about the climate in South Texas.

On a side note, this thread has been a humorous read, almost a worthy replacement for ou48a's post-Bedlam meltdown that I was deprived of :(

What better infrastructure does SA have?

A better freeway system for starters. The San Antonio system is a lot more efficient at getting people from the burbs to downtown and vice versa, and its a lot easier to get from one side of the metro to the other. Austin is a mess with one interstate serving the entire metro. Think of what OKC would be like with ONLY I-40, all other highways gone, and on top of that, all of the development - 1.3 million population, was sprawled along it, with development dropping off just a few miles on each side of the freeway. Even in our small metro area, traffic would be horrendous but sprawl would be continuous from Shawnee to El Reno.

I don't know what Austin you're talking about, maybe circa 1970. The Mopac is just as important as 35 and there are several loops if that's your thing. They have a really cheap, innovative commuter rail which is my thing.

I must say I had this uncanny feeling that you'd mention their superior freeway system with its marvelous ease and convenience for getting everyone out to the suburbs.

What?

Over a billion dollars of public investment currently going on is comparable to downtown OKC and not comparable to Cleveland? Show the proof that backup that claim.

None of those developments come from some sale tax increase. They're all separate and stem from different funding sources.

Also, those four big developments are not the only public or private investments currently happening in downtown or the urban core. They're just some of the largest.

Over 2,000 residential units are planned or under construction in the urban core as we speak. That's after a little over 1,000 have been built in the last year.

The overrated and over-hyped college town you seem to be enamored with doesn't have a single "loop" yet alone "several" loops.

The worst congested highway in San Antonio, Loop 410, is ranked 38th (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2010/01/19/americas-75-worst-commutes.html) for congestion in the United States.

That's with a 2.3 million metro and it being a loop that intersects with TWO heavily trafficked interstates, 35 and 10.

^^ WOW. Those are some pretty stunning pictures. Some of the houses are especially gorgeous.

Could you somehow show a map of San Antonio with where all those districts/areas are overlaid on top of it? I'm not very familiar with SA, so I wouldn't know where to find most of those areas.

Looking at those pictures kinda bums be out. I just graduated and am currently doing a field rotation for my job, and I had initially requested to be located in San Antonio/South Texas. Instead I got put in Upstate NY/NE Pennsylvania. Definitely on the opposite side of the spectrum in terms of weather!

I've only had the pleasure of visiting San Antonio once. We were only there for a couple of days. We did The Alamo (a LOT smaller than one might imagine) and The Paseo. We also visited one bar on the Riverwalk. The rest of the visit was hanging around the ex-in-laws' house (ret. Air Force). I wish we could have spent a week there as there were dozens of places I would have liked to see (other than the ex-in-laws' house and listening to my ex-step-mother in-laws' incessant bitching, griping whining and moaning in the direction of her husband).

I can't think of a single thing that I didn't like about San Antonio, itself . . . but our yearly out-of-state trip take us the other direction (toward Minnesota . . . which is also a nice place to visit.) The photos at the top were fantastic, as usual.

It's a mixed-use development called Eilan. The rail is a trolley line that runs within the development itself. The colorful buildings you see are apartments.

I completely agree. Charlotte also has several areas like that in its suburbs. I wish OKC would develop more suburban developments that are more than simply tract housing and strip shopping centers. There are countless ways to build an attractive suburban area. I don't mind suburbs and sprawl, but I wish there would be more dignified developments.

Thought that water park was in Galveston?

The first Schlitterbahn was built in New Braunfels and is still there today. It also the one that is voted best water park in the country.

Schlitterbahn has built smaller water parks in places like South Padre and Galveston as well as Kansas City. There is also a Schlitterbahn under construction in Corpus Christi.

However, as I said, the original is in New Braunfels and consists of three separate parks. The original park is the one that earns the yearly recognition and awards.

Quick, honest, question: How does all of this align with New Urbanism (that apparently seems to want to cram as many people as possible into the Olde Parte o' Town) for the sake of . . . ? I would love to live and work in downtown OKC and I certainly get the list of endless downsides to Urban Sprawl yet the In-Packing of population for the sake of so doing is a concept that eludes me. (along with many other concepts).

Is this a question geared towards me or is it for the other thread thread that this thread was split from.

My aunt and uncle just built a McMansion in New Braunfels. Quite peculiar since they lived the last six decades in Fairhope AL and as far as I know have no connection to that area other than maybe taking the grand kids to the waterpark there.

Now what I want to know is whatever happened to Old Braunfels?

They probably tubed one of New Braunfels two rivers during the summer and fell in love with it.

New Braunfels will also be home to the first In-n-Out burger chain in the San Antonio metro area. In and Out will open its first San Antonio locations middle of next year.

New Braunfels is named after Braunfels, Germany. That area and a lot of areas in and around San Antonio were settled by Germans.

It's an open, general, question regarding possible paradigms, vis-à-vis people and where to put them, without needless conflict.
Yet it isn't rhetorical. San Antonio--as good as it was 30 years ago--is apparently even better now.
Even with all the sprawls and loops and whatnots.
Sort of an infilling of the exurbs with a urban, diverse--yet contextual--twists I suppose.

Again: I like(d) San Antonio.

That is all you have to say? Really? Lol ok. You obviously have a bias towards Texas. San Antonio is better than Cleveland will ever be, imo. Cleveland is a nice city, but if you're seriously going to bash this thread because SA is a kick ass city, that's just fine. No one there will miss ya.

Help me understand what this has to do with Cleveland... Or me slighting Texas. This guy has a chip on his shoulder because we all hype the other Texas cities besides SA.

You get your panties in a wad to defend suburban places in every thread. Texas has great cities, but anyone coming on here ranting and raving about how much better SA is than Austin has to be insane. This is an urbanism forum. Not a suburban sprawl fan club, for which I agree SA would be superior.
