View Full Version : Cool Whip -- or not -- on pumpkin pie

On this day of thanks and mass consumption, I must ask the burning topical question (yea, even more pressing than the Ginger vs Mary Ann debate):

Do you slop a big dollop of Cool Whip onto your slice of pumpkin pie, or do you prefer to enjoy it 'au naturel'?

As for me, the answer is... without.

While I have nothing against Cool Whip per se, I like to experience the inherent pumpkin-y flavor in full force without unnecessary adornments (gilding the lily, and all that).

I say yes to a little Cool Whip, mostly for decorative purposes, but also for the textural contrast completing the trilogy involving the crust and the filling. This is especially true if the filling is made from canned pumpkin rather than fresh pumpkin. With fresh pumpkin, real whipped cream is preferable. =)

Without. Pumpkin pie is nasty and who in the hell wants it in their Cool Whip?

Just give me the vat and a spoon and I'm good. No need for mucking about with the pie.

Crack that whip
Give the past a slip
Step on a crack
Break your momma's back

When a problem comes along
You must whip it
Before the cream sets out too long
You must whip it
When something's goin' wrong
You must whip it

Now whip it
Into shape
Shape it up
Get straight
Go forward
Move ahead
Try to detect it
It's not too late
To whip it
Whip it good

When a good time turns around
You must whip it
You will never live it down
Unless you whip it
No one gets away
Until they whip it

I say whip it
Whip it good
I say whip it
Whip it good

Crack that whip
Give the past a slip
Step on a crack
Break your momma's back

When a problem comes along
You must whip it
Before the cream sets out too long

Move ahead
Try to detect it
It's not too late
To whip it
Into shape
Shape it up
Get straight
Go forward
Move ahead
Try to detect it
It's not too late
To whip it
Well, whip it good

3 out of 6 pumpkin pie aficionados prefer this to Cool Whip.

The other three don't really care one way or the other. =)

(Note: Survey results may be skewed on account of they asked pumpkin pie aficionados instead of regular folks.)

Cool whip is alright, but yeah...actual cream is better and not oil which is what cool whip is.

Sometimes. I like Reddi Whip.

Actual home-made whipped cream? Yes. Cool Whip? Never. That stuff is an abomination.

Ah, some whipped cream fans here. Herb Alpert would agree with you...

Still, in whatever incarnation it appears, the white fluffy stuff is best left off IMO. I like my punkin' straight up, as it were. 200 proof, you could say.

It's not a requirement by any means, but I like a little whipped cream on my punkin' pie. Cool whip will do in a pinch though, "abomonation" or not.

I actually owned that record, and wore it out to the point that I had to stack an entire roll of quarters on the tone arm so that it wouldn't skip.
No Cool Whip appears on the cover of that record album. Ergo . . . =)

I guess it is only the Quality Grocery Stores that offer the "Other Delights" alluded to, above.

And they are on an entirely different aisle than where the Cool Whip is kept.

I still have that LP.

Love me some Herb Alpert.

Next time I go shopping for some Cool Whip, I'll be doing the best I can not to be thinking of this tune . . .

(I could be wrong, but I think that the confused bull near the end of the vidclip was looking for the mandolin player. Or maybe the Redi-Wip?)

I use whole cream in a chilled bowl with a touch of Turbinado sugar for my dessert topping around the holidays. I do like how Stewie Griffin says "Cool Whip" though.

Both...or all three. Cool Whip, Redi-Whip or homemade is fine with me for the one piece of pumpkin pie that I can eat a year. I like slightly thawed Cool Whip straight out of the bowl.

The coolest thing about Reddi-Wip is that you can sit on the deck with
your grandson, and two cans of Reddi-Wip, and have a race to see who
can have it come out of their nose first.

Do they still use nitrous oxide as a propellant? I've never liked that idea. Too easy to abuse. That album cover sure brings back some fond memories.

I hope so. LOL!

A Taste of Honey has always been a fave. I believe it was the hit on
that LP.
