View Full Version : Sequels that are better than the original?
PiePie 11-16-2013, 01:19 AM Just curious what sequels that you think is better than the original?
For me it would be:
Ghostbusters 2
Terminator 2
Child's Play 2
Karate Kid II
Poltergesit II
Short Circuit 2
That is all I can think of so far

I know a lot of film buffs who like "The Godfather Part II" better than the original. I go back and forth, both incredible in their own way.

I forgot about the Godfather Part II, I liked it better than the original also
BBatesokc 11-16-2013, 04:01 AM I personally liked the new version of True Grit. After seeing the new one I went back and watched the original just to make sure..... and while I like the original, the newer version is far more my movie taste.
Just the facts 11-16-2013, 07:30 AM Monsters University
Despicable Me 2
Indiana Jones - Temple of Doom
Cannonball Run II
I don't know if Aliens was better than Alien, but it was darn close.
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
RadicalModerate 11-16-2013, 08:46 AM Exorcist II: The Heretic.
Oh. You said BETTER than. Sorry.
The Road Warrior was better than Mad Max.
Snowman 11-16-2013, 08:46 AM I don't know if Aliens was better than Alien, but it was darn close.
I think Aliens 3 was the low point in the series, though some of the Aliens vs Predictors tried hard to take that title away

I can agree with Terminator 2 but the others...
Speaking of your name, I'd have to say American Pie 2, only because it's post first year of college and poor Jim still can't get things going his way! You're like "again?!". Also, the scene at the house they're painting...classic. Hard to beat such a classic comedy!
bchris02 11-16-2013, 11:25 AM Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was better than the original.
Unbelievable they are still producing straight to DVD sequels for Home Alone. They are also still making Beethoven sequels as well as The Sandlot sequels.
Easy180 11-16-2013, 11:30 AM 28 Weeks Later was slightly better than 28 Days Later
Both were excellent zombie flicks!
sooner88 11-16-2013, 11:35 AM Die Hard With a Vengeance

I agree with Home Alone 2
I thought of another one
Batman Returns is better than Batman
Exorcist II: The Heretic.
Oh. You said BETTER than. Sorry.
The Road Warrior was better than Mad Max.
That is factually incorrect.
Jon27 11-16-2013, 06:14 PM The Dark Knight.
RadicalModerate 11-16-2013, 06:33 PM The Dark Knight.
Yup. (too bad it got so much negative press.)

RadicalModerate 11-16-2013, 07:02 PM That is factually incorrect.
Yet, opinionally sound. no?
If you count re-views of movies such as "The Parachutists" and "Some Weird Cuba-Based FilmKlusterfukke" by the team at Mystery Science Theater then I'd have to add anything the MST crew got their hands on.
Martin 11-16-2013, 07:49 PM this thread is nearly a day old and i'm the first one to say star trek 2: the wrath of khan? really? -M
Martin 11-16-2013, 07:54 PM i know this is subjective but I've gotta strongly disagree with these two:
ghostbusters 2
indiana jones - temple of doom
i mean, both ghostbusters and raiders of the lost ark are nearly pitch perfect in my opinion. the sequels, while not bad just didn't stack up to the originals. in fact, i'd say that temple of doom is the weakest of the three indiana jones movies. -M

Maybe you missed the obvious plot holes in Raiders of the Lost Ark. :)

From this day forward, I am on your side regarding sequels to "first run" sidewalks and setbacks.
(yet . . . I was already, so that endorsement could be perceived as redundant 'r whatever. =)
Martin 11-17-2013, 11:49 AM maybe you missed the obvious plot holes in raiders of the lost ark.
okay... that's pretty funny. still gotta say that i like raiders the best, though. that clip reminds me of one from this british show called spaced (the clip starting at :15)... -M

Is that a sequel?, a re-make? or a re-boot?

Loved this episode, even if it did ruin the movie for me!
td25er 11-19-2013, 12:20 PM Toy Story 2
Home Alone 2
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (narrowly edges Raiders for me)
The Dark Knight
There are rumors that they are going to sequel to "It's a Wonderful Life".
Richard at Remax 11-19-2013, 01:13 PM Aliens
Terminator 2
LOTR: Return of the King
Dark Knight
Toy Story 2 and 3
Die Hard with a Vengeance
Bourne 2 and 3
The Road Warrior
Godfather part 2
I don't know if you can do various James Bond movies but 2 of the last 3 have been great. Harry Potter movies as well
PiePie 11-19-2013, 01:13 PM There are rumors that they are going to sequel to "It's a Wonderful Life".
That is pathetic, it should be left alone
Road Warrior
Dark Knight
Star Trek 2, 4, and 6
Empire
and, going to B movies, Deathstalker 2 is light years better than Deathstalker 1.
SoonerDave 11-19-2013, 01:58 PM "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is generally considered a better movie than the big, epic 1979 "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" reunion movie, although thematically and stylistically they're two entirely different kinds of movies.
Monsters University
Indiana Jones - Temple of Doom
That's the first affirmative vote I've EVER heard for Temple of Doom. An utterly wretched movie, but amazingly not quite as deliberately wretched as Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
RadicalModerate 11-19-2013, 02:18 PM There are rumors that they are going to sequel to "It's a Wonderful Life".
Maybe they could put a really dark spin on greed and corruption in the Savings and Loan business and call it "Citizen Bailey" . . .
Lord Helmet 11-20-2013, 03:35 PM i know this is subjective but I've gotta strongly disagree with these two:

Agreed 100%. I'd also wager that Karate Kid is MILES better than it's sequel.
As for sequels that are better:
The Empire Strikes Back
Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan
Terminator 2
The Dark Knight

An interesting take on this subject and I agree with it.

Are you referring to Red Zone Cuba?
RadicalModerate 11-22-2013, 11:15 AM Are you referring to Red Zone Cuba?
Yep. That's the one. It had an alternate title, as well . . .
Something like "Last Train to Mondo Wondo" or "Mondo Fine" . . .(or whatever).
(All of it was John Carradine's finest hour. =)

Oh the horror, the horror. Nothing will ever touch the original of that movie.

Don't buy and watch that DVD. It'll put your eye out.
(Still laughing out loud at your quip, Hoya. Literally laughing out loud. No kidding. If I bust a gut, I'm gonna sue. =)
If they made a sequel to this it would have to be better than the original:

Maybe they could get William Shatner to sing the theme song.

Sometimes you can judge a book by it's cover. Thank you hoya, you put it better than I could.
Prunepicker 12-01-2013, 08:51 PM I saw a sequel once and didn't like it.
I'm a Psycho fan. Psycho is perhaps the most incredibly artistic feat ever
performed in the arena of cinema. Every aspect was as perfect as a
human can be, cinematographically speaking. Today's directors aren't as
well versed in cinematography as they want to believe they are.
Hitch knew how to use color in black and white cinematography. Today's
directors are good with making an episode in color and clicking on B&W.
Puke. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Nobody should ever attempt to make a sequel to any of Hitchcock's
incredible cinematic creations. They'll lose every time.

"It's a Horrible Death"
And for those of you voting DHWaV better than Die Hard; what is wrong with you people?
Richard at Remax 12-05-2013, 09:12 AM NOt taking away anything from the greatness of the first one but the only slight reason that I liked DHWaV better than the original is that it was spread across new York with memorable set pieces all while having the die hard feel/charm. plus you cant go wrong with sam Jackson and Jeremy irons.
RadicalModerate 12-05-2013, 08:36 PM The Sound of Music (tonight, live on NBC).
(my respect for Carrie Underwood went up a few notches. not to mention the entire concept of a staged musical called "the sound of music")
