EDMOND — Economic development and sports enthusiasm is on the rise with the new $15 million Summit Sports Complex.

Community leaders were presented with the official unveiling Wednesday of the complex that is being developed on the northeast corner of Interstate 35. The Edmond Planning Commission approved the site plan 4-0 this week.

The groundbreaking for the 55,000-square-foot facility is anticipated in the spring and will it open during the summer of 2015, said Brad Lund, who is part of the Summit management team with Sold Out Strategies.

Summit Sports Complex will house eight basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts and two indoor soccer fields under one roof,” Lund said. Food service, office space, meeting space as well as medical and physical therapy will be housed in the facility.

“It is a dream come true for us,” said Mark Herrin, representing Oklahoma Peak Performance Volleyball.

OPPV represents 31 teams this year, he said. Many of the players are from Edmond and will have top-notch training at Summit, he said. The facility will attract players from all across the U.S., he added.

“Summit Sports, we believe, is the final missing piece that will allow us to take this to a national level,” Herrin said.

Indoor space in this region of the U.S. is needed, said Tim McLaughlin, majority owner of the new North American Soccer League set to play in the spring of 2015.

“This is wonderful that families won’t have to drive to Dallas and Kansas City,” he said""

Awesome!!!! Really wish they would build a structured parking garage instead of that huge parking lot though, but this will still be cool.

KFOR did a segment on this yesterday.. it looks pretty awesome. They talked quite a bit about the plans for sport camps for inner city kids, and also the hope to get tournaments here.

a) There are quite a few low income kids in Edmond.
b) This complex will support the entire metro, not just Edmond.

Out on the fringe of town away from everything ;)

Where currently can the inner city kids to go for basketball and other type camps for a similar facility? Dallas?

I have got to say, a 10-15 minute bus ride is a lot more feasible.

How do you fit two soccer fields, 8 bball courts/16 volleyball courts (guessing those two courts are interchangeable) in a 55,000sf building? Is that a typo?

Out on the fringe of town away from everything ;)So. . . this will be a great facility and won't be "out on the fringe of town" for long. The area is rapidly growing.

But should it be? Will it continue?

How are "inner city" kids going to be serviced? Who will pay for their transportation to the facility?

It's got to be. Wouldn't the soccer fields be over 30ksf alone? The 8 bball courts would also be another 30k, and there are other things in there like concessions and such..

Just found this - Summit Fitness - Edmond OK CVB (http://www.visitedmondok.com/sports/summit.php)

It says 180k SF, which would be closer.

99.99% of people I know own a car and I'm sure the city link bus will run to it. Obviously it will continue as the city grows. As long as people continue to invest in their community and have pride, the area will be great for years to come even when the sprawl occurs further out than it already is.

"In Edmond, developers unveil venue's game plan
Groundbreaking is scheduled for spring for a $15 million indoor sports complex in Edmond.
BY STEVE GUST • Modified: October 9, 2013 at 10:10 pm • Published: October 10, 2013

EDMOND — Plans were unveiled Wednesday for a $15 million indoor sports complex developers say will make Edmond and the metro a high-profile venue for youth sports.

Although 18 months from a projected completion, hopes are high the 155,000-square-foot Summit Sports Complex will turn Edmond into a destination spot for youth tournaments. That should translate into higher sales tax revenues from visitors patronizing restaurants, hotels and other businesses, city leaders said.

Making the announcement at the Downtown Community Center was Brad Lund of Sold Out Strategies, who helped Summit Sports Management with business plans and its business model. The city saw increased revenue in June when it hosted the U.S. Youth Soccer Region III championships, which drew thousands of players and spectators, most from outside of Oklahoma.

The Summit Sports Complex will be built at Interstate 35 and Covell, on land owned by the city and leased to Summit Sports Management Inc.

Plans call for eight regulation basketball courts, 16 regulation volleyball courts, two indoor soccer fields, fitness and personal training, medical and physical therapy services, 25,000 square feet of viewing and lounge space and space for casual dining.

The idea for the center was born two years ago by local developers Davis Hudiburg and Derek Turner, who is also the Oklahoma Christian Schools high school football coach. Turner said he already has been contacted by youth sports officials across the country about scheduling tournaments at Summit Sports. Groundbreaking is scheduled for spring.

Last year the city bought the 19 acres for just more than $2 million, Edmond Mayor Charles Lamb said. The agreement calls for Summit Sports to buy the land in 15 years, if not before, Lamb said"

Yes, I think this facility would be a lot better off somewhere along Broadway Extension, like where the Thunder practice facility is. Why it's on I-35 in that particular place is beyond me. Good for Edmond but bad for inner city kids (and when I say inner city kids, I'm talking about OKC kids, not low income Edmond kids) trying to find transportation in a city that has horrible transportation options!

You mean the free city link that runs all over the city, through downtown, and will probably connect to the facility, and that runs to downtown OKC? Horrible!

Yes, cause inner city kids can get to downtown OKC.

All laughs and facts and sarcasm aside, OKC kids don't all live downtown. PluPan may know a ton of lower income kids that have access to vehicles and that's great. Point being that inner city/low income OKC kids that may want to get to this facility +/-20 miles away from wherever they live are still going to have to find a ride to your FREE City Link Bus.

Well, how many square miles is OKC? By your criteria there's no real location that will fit everyone.

That being said, the facility is 15 miles from 23rd and MLK. I'd say those kids would have as much chance of getting to this facility as anywhere else in the city, unless it was built right there (which it never would be). This isn't meant to be a community center where kids will go to every day after school.

It's amazing to me that no matter how beneficial and good this will be for the community, people nit pick and criticize the smallest details. They say they'd like to have youth camps for inner city kids, a good thing, yet people criticize that it's not walking distance to their homes. If they need/want to get there, they will get there. Plus the fact that it's in Edmond probably makes people sore. Any other suburb and it would be praised

Slow roll: Lack of financing delays Summit Sports Complex

By: Molly M. Fleming The Journal Record June 10, 2016

EDMOND – Sold Out Strategies partner Brad Lund is frustrated. He has not been able to make much progress on building the Summit Sports Complex planned for Interstate 35 and Covell Road.

The private-public partnership project was announced in October 2013. In spring 2015, Sold Out Strategies purchased the project from Derek Turner of Turner & Co. and Davis Hudiburg of Broadway Development Group.

In the two-and-a-half years since the announcement, Let’s Play has developed its second indoor soccer facility. The original center is at 100 N. McCormick in Oklahoma City’s western corridor, off Interstate 40. The new one in northeast Oklahoma City is at 11100 N. Kelley Ave. The centers are privately funded, and the company has 25 facilities nationwide.

Lund said obtaining financing for his project is difficult.

“The economy of Oklahoma has changed considerably,” he said. “The banking regulations have tightened up.”

He said he also can’t get information on how the facility would make money, which banks need before signing the loan. Any similar facilities are privately owned, so he can’t show how they would get a return on their investment.

If it’s constructed, the building will be between 155,000 and 181,000 square feet, depending on the final money available, Lund said previously. The complex will have four permanent maple hardwood basketball courts, eight Sport Court volleyball courts, two regulation indoor soccer fields, 25,000 square feet of viewing area and a lounge. Temporary floors can be installed to have up to eight basketball courts and 16 volleyball courts for tournaments and practices.

Lund said he is contractually obligated to build the center. He met with Assistant City Manager Steve Commons this month and discussed reworking the contractual language to appease the banks.

“The biggest concern with the banks is the way our land lease is with the city of Edmond,” Lund said. “It puts the bank in a secondary position. It’s boiled down to the language.”

Once a bank agrees to finance the $21 million project, work can begin immediately because the architectural and engineering work is complete, Lund said.

At Let’s Play, Vice President of Development Mike Garrett said the company is adding beer to its Kelley center, which opened in late 2015. The company already offers beer at the McCormick site. The Oklahoma City Planning Commission approved the brew addition at its Thursday meeting. Beer will not be served until the final game is complete each day.

He said the company could add another facility in the metro or the state if it finds a valuable site.

“We bring these facilities to an area that will need it or support it,” he said. “It’s not taxpayer-funded.”

Let’s Play builds only indoor soccer centers. He said the sport is becoming the new after-work softball game. It’s good for people of all ages and skill levels because the smaller fields mean more players get to touch the ball.

“It seems to be a really great sport for fun and exercise,” he said. “It’s been a great developer of skills for the American soccer player.”

This seems like the same problem the convention center had. Evidently these public/private joint ventures have become more difficult to finance due to new banking regulations.
