EDMOND — The Edmond Planning Commission approved the site plan 5-0 recently for an Aldi grocery store, with a location proposed west of the RCB Bank, north of Edmond Road and west of Kelly Avenue.

ALDI Inc. is a national discount grocery chain in the United States, Europe and Australia, according to the city. The headquarters for ALDI are in Batavia, Ill.

The chain has several store openings planned in Oklahoma, including a recent store that opened in Stillwater this month

Who shops at Aldi's? I've never met a soul who claims they have purchased something from that store.

Rom, if no one shopped there, I highly doubt they would be in business; let alone expanding.

North American headquarters...Aldi is a German chain, which is why you bag your own groceries.

My wife shops there. She shops in about 3 different places a month with Aldi being one of them. She will be thrilled with this news, although it is a bit surprising. Seems like to build in Edmond they would want to be further to the East - not as close to the Memorial & Penn one.

I love Aldi's shopped the one in Moore all the time. Don't frequent Aldi since moving to Edmond. The Penn and memorial location is awful traffic-wise. I'm excited about this new Edmond location. It's on my way home from work.

*UPDATE* - No sign of any sort of construction at the proposed Aldi location in Edmond. I visited the new Yukon location and it is very nice.

I concur - I hope this becomes a reality. Told my wife and others about it and they were all really excited. Another way to stay away from the Penn/Memorial area.

No, not the new one in Stillwater. It's different. Just brands you never heard of. The city of Stillwater put up a new stop light on N. Perkins Rd. for the store, but only made traffic congestion even worse.

I won't go out of my way to shop there, but if one were convenient, I'd use it. Sure, it's not a health food store, but (with a few exceptions here and there) cereal is cereal, salsa is salsa, ketchup is ketchup. It's no more a dump than most other grocery stores and you can get some really good deals there.

Thanks for the photos. It's good to see some progress. I predict a healthy turnout when the store officially opens.

If you ever get into a Aldi's and look around. There are a lot of older people on SS who shop there. Also lots of large families. I go there to get some of their German food products. They also carry a brand of bread that is popular in Chicago and not otherwise available in Oklahoma.

I'll give Aldi's a (second) chance. Back when, the shopping cart deposit thing weirded me out, as did their lack of bags. The latter won't be an issue now, as I generally use cloth bags from other stores, anyway.

Boscorama,
I will give them a second chance, but my first and only purchase was ground black pepper for my car lunches at lake Hefner and it was horrible. I decided that if they messed up something that simple, I couldn't trust anything else. Now this thread has me interested in the German items they sell. I don't have a problem with cart deposits, I have gotten used to that in my visits to London. As for bags, I can handle that as well. I have three that I bought and never remember to take them in. I guess at ALDI's I will have to remember.

There are usually some empty boxes to be had around the store. Kinda like at Sam's Club. They have a wonderful Italian bread imported from Chicago. I used to buy it when ever I happen to be in Chicago. Now I just have to go to Aldi's to get it. Yum.

Drove by the store this weekend and saw masons finishing up brickwork on the exterior of the store. My guess is that it should be ready to go in 4 to 6 weeks.

As they are German owned..this makes sense. I will have to check them out as we love a lot of the german food products. Thanks for heads up.

I'm German and we eat pretty much nothing but German food. My grandma bought a Stollen for Christmas from ALDI's.

They have great deals on produce! Right before Thanksgiving I purchased 12 oz bags of fresh Ocean Spray cranberries for $0.69/bag! When we lived in OKC it wasn't very convenient to shop at the Penn-Memorial location, but I did when they had good deals on produce.

If I remember right, Aldi's is throwing down the mat in Oklahoma City with plans for a rather large expansion here. Now, if we can just talk them into just one Trader Joe's, we'd all be happy.

Does Aldi's own Trader Joe?

Does Aldi's own Trader Joe?

yes, aldi does own trader joes but not the division that controls the us stores. the Albrecht brothers split the company in half a long time ago, and they operate completely independent of each other. Theo, who runs aldi nord, owns trader joes and actually doesnt have a single aldi store in the us. Karl, runs aldi sud, which consists of all us operations and doesn't have a hand in trader joes whatsoever.

so we wouldn't be able to talk to anyone at aldi here that could sway traded joes to coming into our market, unless that person happened to have a personal relationship with someone at tjs

I lived in Germany from 2007-2019. Absolutely loved it there. I also shopped at Aldi when I lived in Germany, but preferred Edeka, as it was closer to my house.

Did a quick walk through today. I was surprised to see quite a bit of namebrand stuff. Miracle Whip, Pringles chips, Kraft cheese, Snickers ice cream treats. Dole bananas were cheaper than any I've seen. Didn't buy anything but they gave out shopping bags with several small off-brand edibles samples. It is close to my Edmond epicenter, too convenient to not explore before rendering my judgement.

I forgot about the grand opening but was driving by yesterday, I stopped in, the place was packed. I number of the big wigs were there in wearing suits. I asked about Aldi's and they dodged the question but did say they might consider adding more parking. More cars in the lot then parking spaces. Anyway, it looks a bit bigger then any of the other Aldi's I've been in and a bit nicer. Looked like half the people shopping were senior citizens. Anyway, I forgot the one item I did want from Aldi's.

My wife has been waiting for Aldi to open. She frequently buys bananas/milk at the Braums on Santa Fe & Edmond Road and wants an alternative to the bananas because the ones they have there are usually terrible. Very ripe and covered with bruises.

I was in there yesterday and the day before (forgot one item) I looked at the bananas and they were over ripe. I did get a great deal on some other fruit and veggies. Watermelon $2.99 ea, avocados 29 cents, zuccinni 69 cents a lb. Cannot remember what other fruit and veggies I bought. I'm not into packaged food just fresh. For good bananas try Sprouts.
