They have seemed to have vanished. I like Korean dishes and
especially Bulgoki. Are there any restaurants in town?

Vanished? All the same ones I have been going to for years are still around and a new one opened in Del City last year.

There is Dong-A in Moore.

B-Won, Jeon Ju, and a couple of others in Del City I can't remember the name of and there is one in what I think is called the KO Mart in Midwest City and there is also Kim's Kithcen in Midwest City.

Having spent a number of years in Korea courtesy of my uncle (Sam) the most authentic and best is Korea House in Del City. Not shown on Yelp is the Korean restaurant in Moore, Dong A, which is also good and just as authentic.

this seems as good a place to ask as any... what's up with all the korean restaurants in the mid-del area? does it have something to do with servicemen coming back from the korean war having a taste for korean food? -M

I don't know the answer but I've always wondered that myself..... I also forgot to mention Fusion at 12th and Broadway in Moore is Korean.

Korean War was 50 - 53. . . don't think these places have been there that long. More likely it is the influence of the military (esp AWACS and Navy Wing) who have been in that area. . .and, in addition to liking the food, possibly have Korean spouses and/or extended family in the area.

Bingo. There are always Korean Restaurants around military bases, good example is Lawton.

Even the chinese restaurants in most military towns are Korean owned and managed.

Thanks for all the posts.

I don't believe the Koreans are in the Del City, i.e. Tinker, area because of
the military. At one time, around 1978, there was a small Korean community
near N.W. 23rd and N. Classen. I don't know why, but they left. There was
a wonderful restaurant, Korean House at N.W. 23rd and N. Villa, and a
Korean grocery near N.W. 23rd and N. Classen. With the racial tensions
of Asians being almost as high as the Native Americans, I supposed the
Koreans left because of the Vietnamese propagation. This is only
speculation.

If in Lawton, there's about 6 Korean restaurants that offer great bulgogi, mainly due to Ft. Sill. However, there's not a single Vietnamese or Thai restaurant down there.

I've been to a few of the Korean restaurants in the state, and they were all pretty lackluster. I guess coming from a state that had good ones (and having lived in Korea for a while) spoiled me :P
IMO it would better to just make Korean food at home. It's not as complicated as it seems! There are great videos on Youtube :D

Most of the Korean food I've had was made by Koreans. I learned to
cook some of the dishes. However, many of them bought their
Kimchi instead of make it. One person would go to Dallas.

Not exactly Korean but has some Korean influences and Korean owners.... Has anyone tried Vamanos Grill at Britton and Broadway Extension?

I went there for lunch yesterday and had the Korean ribeye burrito and it was really tasty. It was a fusion of Mexican and Korean flavors. I believe it even had kimchi in it.

Tried a carnitas taco too. it's not your typical Mexican type taco because it has lettuce and cheese on it but it was really good and came with some incredible tasting green sauce.

I was hoping they had Korean Tacos similar to what Heo's food truck serves but the tacos came with the option of corn or flour tortillas or a crispy corn shell..... I chose corn and it came with two tortillas like the Mexican tacos.

One of the things I was freaked out about, and later learned not to
be, was Koreans keeping dried anchovies in their cupboard. They
were used for seasoning in many dishes. The first time I saw a large
bowl of them was quite surprising. Ick!

After eating dishes with anchovies it's no wonder that anchovies
were popular on pizza until recently. They are incredible!

I've since tried to order pizza with anchovies.

I like B-won. Now, I started going to the one on 12th and Eastern. Its closer to our house off 19th. They also have a Korean store in the same center.

That would be N.E. 12th, right? Are there other locations? I looked on
Urban Spoon and didn't find them.

I may try it this weekend. Thanx!

Whoa! Thou must use the "-" on Urban Spoon, i.e. B-Won and not B Won.
I just found it at 4517 S Sunnylane Rd Oklahoma City, OK 73135.
The address puts it south of SE 44th. Is that another location than
the one you use?

OY! Now I don't know what to do. The one I found south of SE 44th
and Sunnylane is the only one I can find. Dong A is a name that's
more in line with Vietnamese than Korean. I say that because Dong is
used prevalently in the Vietnamese districts and not in the Korean.

It's just an observation. I'm very observant.

If you liked it then it's good. That's what the Koreans tell me.

Come to think about it, that's true about everything.

I'm gong to wait before I go to MWC. It's because I like "home style"
Korean rather than "pseudo gourmet" Korean food. Gimme dat beef
smothered in garlic, green onions and dried anchovies. Sweet Home
Alabama! They just don't realize it... yet. They likes dem' vidalias,
garlic and salt.

I believe "home style" takes the Kimchi.

B-Won is where mmm said in Del City.... Dong-A is at N 12th and Eastern in Moore and is very much Korean and not Vietnamese.

Both are very good.

There are several other Korean restaurants in the Mid-Del area..... Kim's Kitchen (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/46/1494042/restaurant/Oklahoma-City/Kims-Kitchen-Midwest-City), Jeon-Ju (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/46/1500980/restaurant/Oklahoma-City/Midwest-City/Jeon-Ju-Korean-Restaurant-Del-City), Korean House (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/46/500841/restaurant/Oklahoma-City/Korean-House-Del-City), Seoul Garden (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/46/501356/restaurant/Midwest-City/Seoul-Garden-Korean-Oklahoma-City), OK KO Mart (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/46/1536230/restaurant/Oklahoma-City/OK-Ko-Mart-Midwest-City)

And in Moore there is also Fusion Cafe (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/46/500575/restaurant/Oklahoma-City/Fusion-Cafe-Moore).

Dong means 'East' in Chinese, so Dong A is probably acknowledging their location on Eastern Avenue rather than trying to have a Korean (or Vietnamese) reference.

just food for thought :)

I'm pretty sure it means "east" in Korean also. Dong-A, in my opinion, is one of the better Korean restaurants in the metro. Their bibim naengmyeon is very good. OK Komart is also worth checking out, although their menu is very limited. I used to go there for the jjamppong, but unfortunately they don't offer that anymore. Fusion Cafe in Moore has great Korean chicken wings.

The next time I go to the commissary, at Tinker AFB, I'm going to take

I go since I went to the commissary last week.

As nationalistic, or racist, as the Asians are I doubt very seriously
that Korean's would use a Chinese word in their restaurant's name.

The purity of the nation is serious business to Asians.

You could be right, but I just noted the coincidence in the location with the Chinese word for it. I don't speak Korean so I can't say for sure that Dong a is giving homage to East Ave.

But do note that many Asian societies borrow a LOT from China (then you're right, they try to claim it as their own lol). Chopsticks, Potstickers, Ramen, Han Fu, hot pot, Temple/Shrine, classic oriental building design, dofu, ....... could go on - all are from China but popularized by other countries. My wife is amazed by how much Japan and Korea takes credit in America for things/ideas/culture that they learned/borrowed from her home country.

that aside, I love Korean food and am glad OKC has some good options.

I think it loosely translates as a suggestion for getting directions to a Mexican-Korean Fusion Cuisine Food Truck.

If you believe Tom Clancy, Koreans and Japanese are basically from the same stock, but separated by a partial migration, and the Japanese are so much more snooty about their differences than the Koreans are.
