View Full Version : Sugar Daddy Ads on I-35 targeting our young adults

I'm sure to many here this imagery will have no impact and will be justified by, "They're 'adults', its their business." Or, "How is that different from just dating some older well-to-do dude?"

I just find it ironic that within 1.5 miles on the same stretch of I-35 you find two such polar opposite messages - one seeks to exploit our young people, while the other seeks to protect them.

I draw a pretty distinct line in what types of prostitution I target and what types I tolerate..... My biggest beef with this advertisement is the fact it specifically target 'Students.'

Sure, legally when girls turn 16 in Oklahoma they can consent to sex with a 50-year-old man and when they are 18 they are legally adults - and many men will use those facts to justify their perversion. But I seriously doubt many parents of those 16 and 18 year old daughters have the same opinion.

Having sex with an 18 year old is a perversion?

Just being in the company of a younger woman, especially with one who is an interesting conservationist, may be all some older guys want, or in other words, kinda like a visit with a psychiatrist.

I think we all know what the website is pushing.

That's okay, they typically followup with these billboards......

Always makes for 'fun' conversation with the kiddos in the car.

I'm thinking those boards would do a lot for the look in the Plaza District, Midtown or maybe within view of classrooms at UCO or OU.

Ugh, yes specifically targeting students is more than a little creepy.

As a side note, we need to get rid of billboards within city limits in general.

Exactly. I'm not a big fan of the boards in general to a fairly captive audience. Its the 'Hey students' that really irritates me.

If they wanna market to 30+ year old women who are mature enough to make their decisions, so be it.

But we all know 17-20-ish young adults make lots of bad decisions. We should try and limit those opportunities.

And, like it or not, in this digital age, this could be a mistake that could get them into real physical harm or, more than likely, haunt them for the rest of their lives.

They have no idea where life is going to lead them.

I wouldn't doubt for a second some old 'sugar daddy' would out them if they became well known or successful. Not to mention how their registration information and cross contacts/communications/correspondence via the site may be used against them in the future.

I once knew a girl who sold pictures of her feet on craigslist to men who had foot fetishes for $50 a picture. Now that is a solid summer job.

Also, if a student reads those billboards and seriously considers following though with them, then they probably were on the wrong path to begin with.

And if it takes a "sex trafficking is bad" billboard to convince you that sex trafficking is bad, then you were probably on the wrong path to begin with as well.

Yeah . . . But after awhile talking about rainforests, whales and various species of birds and fish gets a bit tiresome.

I wonder if posting some of these billboards out around Hobie Point on Lake Hefner could have a net positive effect society-wise . . .

The OU student paper has carried advertisements in the recent past from groups wanting to purchase the eggs of college students who fit into certain boxes (height, weight, etc.). I want to say they offered somewhere in the $2000-$4000 range for those fitting their desires.

I once drove from Gainesville, FL down to Tampa on I-75 and they had quite a few anti-abortion billboards that showed some of the worst images ive ever seen on them.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with them. Tacky and somewhat offensive to some? Sure. But kids these days are seeing way worse things on TV and the internet.

It seems strange that there is an ad at the top of the page when I view this thread that shows photos of three attractive young Ukrainian women. It doesn't say what the "company" is, and i'm not going to click on it (even if it would generate revenue for the site).

Do you also think "Don't Litter" signs are a waste of time and money? I think a mild admonishment or reminder is good and a mild enticement DOES have some effort, even on old farts like us. Advertising DOES work.

We all know that adults, especially women can not make decisions for themselves and are way to easily swept off their feet. We must protect these adults from themselves.

We have freedom of speech though. I would say this is pushing the edges of it but I don't think the government should ban these unless they are advertising something that's illegal.

It actually depends on a few variables and how many available ad units there are that fit your 'profile.' There are times my website shows no ads at all. When no ad fits a profile it appears they display a default ad - though this happens less and less as basically every Internet surfer is profiled and matched to specific ads. At least this is how my account rep with YouTube explained it to me.

Right now on this thread I see an ad for something called VOCUS Marketing Cloud. I can see how that loosely fits my recent online surfing profile.

I've been getting ads for Asian Singles..... I find this odd because my surfing habits are pretty much contained to 4 sites... OKCTalk, Urbanspoon, The Smoke Ring, and Facebook.

How did they profile those 4 sites to figure out that a 44 year old married white male is looking for a single Asian woman?

I mean come on.... If I was searching for Asian women why would I settle for just a single one? I might as well go for the double or triple play don't ya think?

Having sex with an 18 year old is a perversion?

Only when you do it right...[wink, wink, nudge, nudge].

Between consenting adults who aren't me or my wife, it isn't my business to judge what other people do. I use the term consent in both a strict moral and legal sense here which has gray areas. Age is one of those gray areas but not when people are past the age the law defines as adult. As long as we can place 18 year olds in the military and train them to kill, I'm pretty sure they can decide for themselves what partners they choose to mate with.

Being older and richer doesn't make one less able to make good decisions and older people are just as likely to be exploited one way or another by younger and prettier individuals. Power differentials exist on many levels and age does not define the ability or willingness of an individual to be manipulative or exploitive.

So what is "perverted" here? It is really basic biology mixed with modern technology. Big whoop.

FYI: I have a teenaged daughter and I wouldn't approve of her seeking this sort of thing. At the same time, I'm not particularly concerned for her. She has her own mind, own priorities, and makes her own choices. Being "kept" by an older man isn't likely to be among those choices and my opinion about it isn't the reason. Her sense of self isn't likely to allow her to settle for being anybody's pet. If she does, I won't blame these billboards.

UPDATE: Sorry to bring this back on topic, but, since the billboard was taken down (less than 24-hours after it was put targeted for removal) the outdoor advertising company who leased out the space has donated that same billboard and another electronic billboard for the use of No Boundaries Int'l and their anti-prostitution/trafficking efforts (about a $10,000 donation). A local attorney has stepped up to pay for the production of the billboards and the cost of support materials. We are designing the boards now and they should be up in about two weeks. The new board is going to spoof the original controversial ad and direct people to a domain that was just secured (NeverForSale.com). That site will have information and insights regarding the many dating sights that are thinly veiled promotions for prostitution and/or exploitation. The hope is then to make the domain name and materials available to non-profits in other cities that are faced with these public marketing attempts.

That's awesome. It's nice to see something good came out of all this. The young men and women of our communities need to have value for themselves. The last thing they need to be is someone's good time for a little cash. There are plenty of upstanding methods to support yourself out there that won't lead to you being someone's property.

The thing that disappoints me about these billboards is the women want way too much money. "Sugar daddy" apparently means more than dinner at Golden Corral, a pair of cubic zirconium earrings, and a new skirt from JC Penney's.

Anybody remember the song "Satin Sheets?" How about Moll Flanders or Jane Eyre? Each of these describes people who exchanged one sort of physical comfort for another. From what I understand, there was an arrangement between Adam and Eve along the same lines.

The point is that people will always look to trade physical attractiveness for finacial rewards, security, or any number of reasons. Its instinctual. A person who is finacially secure offers a superior chance that offspring will be able to survive. Pure natural selection.

If the younger or less wealthy party--men do this to, after all--isn't interested in procreation, the relationship provides survival benefits all the same which, in turn, provides procreative benefits given a long enough time horizen.

Promoting this basic human behavior as a business isn't prostitution unless somebody is making allegations that people are being drawn to a service under false pretenses and being tricked into actual prostitution or worse.

If that's the case, then there is a completely different issue than has been discussed thus far.

What may seem like a victory for public moralists is merely another in an age old struggle for public prudery vs. human nature. Human nature always wins in the long term.

I don't admire what this service promotes and I think the ads are crass and tasteless and I'd rather not see them. At the same time, but there seems quite a lot of prudery and selective outrage behind the effort to remove the billboards.

Everytime I see a church do some silly promotion like "Satan Hates Lifechurch" I'm offended but I wouldn't presume they shouldn't be able to purchase and use advertising.

Not necessarily public prudery. I could just as easily argue that those "prudes" are really just seeking competitive advantage in the breeding arena. If I'm a woman who is not as hot, or a man who is not as rich, this service takes away a certain number of available breeding partners. Where is my 20 year old slutty girl with a big rack? Off with Ebenezer Scrooge, apparently. How can woman in her mid 30s with a great personality and two kids meet that wealthy older man when he's off with Tifani Easylay? The people against these services are not the rich old men or the slutty young tramps.
