I'm looking at getting a dog for the family. I'm aware of the OKC Animal Shelter, but does anyone have any recommendations for other dog adoption organizations I might also consider?

There are multiple.

There is

The Bella Foundation The Bella Foundation (http://www.thebellafoundation.org/)
OK Humane okhumane.org (http://www.okhumane.org/)
Pets and People (Yukon) Pets and People Humane Society (http://www.petsandpeople.com/)
Free to Live (far far north Edmond) Free To Live Animal Sanctuary (http://freetoliveok.org/sanctuary/)
Second Chance (Norman) Second Chance Animal Sanctuary (http://www.secondchancenorman.com/)
Pet Angels Rescue http://www.facebook.com/PetAngelsRescue

Plus, there are numerous breed specific rescue groups. Not all of these groups have actual facilities you can visit. Many do outreach via adoption events at local PetSmarts and other stores. A good central point to take a look at pups online is PetFinder.com. You can also look at the web pages and/or facebook page for many of these groups.

Good Luck!

We got both of our dogs from the Central Oklahoma Humane Society. Chipped, spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines. I think they're doing a no-fee adoption event on Valentines day, as well.

There's also an organization called Pet Angels. I've never had one of their animals, but their usually at the NW Petsmart on the weekends when I go to buy pet stuff.

We got our two terriers from Pets & People in Yukon, and our Beagle from Pet Angels, and have had great experiences with both. Pet Angels usually pulls adoptable dogs from the OKC shelter and other kill shelters and then vets them and puts them up for adoption.

Other rescues (that my family is associated with) is Safe Haven Animal Rescue. (www.safehavenanimalrescue.org (http://www.safehavenanimalrescue.org)) or Friends With Four Paws (Friends with Four Paws | Adopt love? don't buy it (http://www.friendswithfourpaws.org)). You can also look at Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder (http://www.petfinder.com), specify Oklahoma City, OK, what species, gender or breed (or all of the above) and you will get a listing that consolidates their member rescues in the area according to your search parameters. Just listing the rescues and shelters in Oklahoma that use that site gives 13,808 organizations to look at.
My personal recommendation: Safe Haven

We adopted our pets from Pets & People at a remote adoption event. Best dogs ever!

We adopted our yellow lab from Heartland Lab Rescue (Heartland Lab Rescue, Inc. - Oklahoma Labrador Rescue for Dogs (http://www.heartlandlabrescue.com)) and had an awesome experience. The thing I like about Heartland is they actually take the time to do a thorough interview of the prospective adopter including their home to help insure the well-being of the dog. They aren't just handing them over.
