I thought I'd start a thread on random interesting and unique articles that me or anyone on this site comes across from any website. My main source is "I F**king Love Science" from Facebook (Please excuse the profanity as they have another page "Science is Awesome: https://www.facebook.com/ScienceIsSeriouslyAwesome). Anyways I love reading article about the universe, science, technology, earth and pretty much everything in between. Please share and I will post as much as I can. Thank you. :)

Well, Christmas is over so I'll go ahead and post this without crushing the Christmas Spirit. lol

Is there a Santa Claus?

No known species of reindeer can fly. However, there are hundreds of thousands, even millions of species of living organisms yet to be classified. While most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.

There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. Since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish & Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total - 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each.

Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with. This is due to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits/second.

This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has .001 seconds to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house.

Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about .78 miles/household, a total trip of 75.5 million miles; not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once ever 31 hours, plus feeding etc.

So Santa's sleigh must be moving at 650 miles/second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle on the earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second. A conventional reindeer can run, TOPS, 15 miles/hour.

The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-size Lego set (2 lb.); the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 lbs. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see above) could pull 10 TIMES the normal amount, we cannot do the job with 8, or even 9 reindeer. We need 214,200. This increases the payload - not counting the weight of the sleigh to 353,430 tons. This is four times the weight of the ocean-liner Queen Elizabeth!!!

353,00 tons traveling at 650 miles/second creates enormous air resistance. This will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as a spacecraft reentering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy!!! Per second!!! Each!!! In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within .00426th of a second. Meanwhile, Santa will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity, A 250 lb Santa (seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of this sleigh by 4,315,015 lbs. of force.

Therefore, if Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve ... he's dead now.

Merry Christmas!-I F***ing Love Science

Pale Blue Dot based from Carl Sagan

http://vimeo.com/51960515

A visual response to Carl Sagan's famed 'Pale Blue Dot' monologue, where he muses on our planet's appearance in a photograph taken by the Voyager 1 space probe. The most distant photograph ever taken of Earth.

This was a free-time project, designed and created in After Effects with extensive sound work created to sit along side the music from Cosmos and spoken word from Sagan. I had wanted to bring visuals to Sagan's words for some time and finished this after working on it periodically over the last 3 months.
Thanks for taking the time to view.

I know its a rather small region, but, question...just the blue dot or the square area? I'm guessing just the blue dot and that that dot itself represents 200 light years. Pretty amazing and it's gonna be at least a thousand years before they find our signal. Lot of area to deal with.

The first AM broadcast was on Christmas Eve, 1906, and Hitler’s broadcasting of the 1936 Olympics is regarded as the first signal powerful enough to be carried into space - which is a rather disturbing thought.

So if any aliens out there pick up our broadcast that will likely be the first broadcast they receive. lol

Here are a few interesting websites I have found if anyone is interested. Some of these I'm sure most people already know, but I'll post them anyways. :)

Atomic Alchemy: Nuclear Processes (http://library.thinkquest.org/17940/) : A nice website that explains in detail Nuclear Fission and other things such as Nuclear disasters and exactly how they were caused, other nuclear processes, and also has a very nice Periodic Table of the Elements.

Information Unlimited - Science Projects, Electronics Kits, Lasers, Tesla Coils, High Voltage Engineering, Plans, Books, Parts, Kits (http://www.amazing1.com/) : A very amazing site where you can buy things you might have dreamed about. There is a lot in it, but, trust me. Search around on it and you can make some very cool science experiments.

HobbyTron.com - Remote Control Cars Trucks Boats Nitro Gas Electric - Airsoft Guns, Magic Tricks & Science (http://www.hobbytron.com/) : Another cool website where you can buy airsoft and air guns. Also has a fairly decent selection of Remote control vehicles. A little on the pricey side though. :/

iPet Companion (http://www.ipetcompanion.com/) : A really interesting website for pet lovers. This website allows you to use a real time camera and with the click of a button, moves an interactive toy to play with the animals(cats and dogs). All this is from your computer and best of all, IT'S FREE!!!!! There are many places to choose from and depending on what you choose, their is a wait time.

2010 Census Interactive Population Map (http://www.census.gov/2010census/popmap/) : Most people know about this one, but, I thought I'd share anyways just in case. This is a very useful and fun interactive map that has many features, most notably looking at population numbers with many ways to filter and explore it.

Space and NASA News (http://www.space.com/) : Another great and useful website that most probably already know. Things about space.... the universe... solar system... the galaxy... and all that good stuff. :)

Top 10 List | Top Ten Lists (http://top-10-list.org/) : A website that contains a plethora of top ten list. At times I question the credibility of this website but for the most part it is pretty good.

U.S. National Debt Clock : Real Time (http://www.usdebtclock.org/index.html) : The good ol' debt clock. Has anyone ever seen this. ;) ... The numbers are astonishing though. Warning debt limit breach. That's okay though because the rules of paying back money and not spending what you don't have, don't apply to our government. Just us. :)

LICENSE PLATES OF THE WORLD (http://www.worldlicenceplates.com/hp.html) : For license plate junkies. lol ... Check out all these license plates from all over the world. :)

http://www.greatmirror.com/index.cfm?home=yes&picturesize=medium : This is a really cool photography website that I might have actually found from a link posted on this website. I can't really remember. Anyways it contains a bunch of pictures many from Oklahoma.

Interactive Map | USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/InteractiveMap.aspx) : Here is an interactive map for the USDA Hardiness zones

I have some more I'll post on here later, but I thought I'd share these for anyone who is interested. :)

The one inhabitants are able to build something truly as amazing as the Devon Tower is just awesome. Nice article about some of the history of Mars and how it could be terraformed.

1. The surface temperature must be raised
2. The atmospheric pressure must be increased
3. The chemical composition of the atmosphere must be changed
4. The surface must be made wet
5. The surface flux of UV radiation must be reduced

Think pollution in L.A. is bad? Check out China!

There has been a public outcry in China over the last few days with regard poor environmental standards and dangerous levels of air pollution. Over the last two days, a thick blanket of choking smog has enveloped the city of Beijing and large swathes of northern China, with visibility reduced to <100 metres in some areas.

At the peak of the event, PM2.5 (fine particulate matter, less than 2.5 microns in diameter) readings reached 993 micrograms per cubic metre; 40 times the World Health Organisation (WHO) safe limit. This incredibly high reading was reflected in an increase in the number of people admitted to hospitals with respiratory problems in the area during the smog.

The intensity of the smog is attributed to low winds, the mixing of fog with pollutants and the fact that the smog was somewhat trapped by the mountains north and west of Beijing.

In a form of protest, dozens of building sites and a car factory in the capital halted work as an anti-pollution measure.

The darkness of the last few days has cast some light on an on-going issue with regard the lack of environmental policy in a country experiencing dramatic economic development. It is time for a revaluation of the importance of the local and global environments within society and the development of suitable regulations to support it.

More amazing beauty if our planet.

These rare, mystifying clouds are referred to as “night-shining” clouds, or noctilucent clouds. They are formed under very restrictive conditions and are only seen in the summer, at latitudes north of 50 degrees. They originate in the layer called the mesosphere; making them the highest cloud formations in our atmosphere. -

This a pretty cool interactive "game" that allows you to zoom in and out and view the different sizes of anything from cosmic foam and the strings that make up everything as we know it to the entire known universe. Check it out.

Interesting. On a significantly smaller scale, I have seen full drink glasses travel on their own at restaurant tables...not in a straight path...involves the bottom of the glass being wet for sure as it leaves a water trail

New documentary premiering tonight on PBS about the Earth!

A new documentary premiering tonight (Feb. 13) on PBS promises to show the Earth as you've never seen it before ... from space.

Produced by NOVA, the documentary "Earth from Space" explores how satellites and spacecraft have revolutionized how scientists look at the world and its intricate systems.

Only by taking a satellite eye's view of the Earth can scientists studying the geology and climate of the planet gain a sense of just how interconnected the sea, land and air of the planet are, saidWaleed Abdalati, the director of the Earth Science and Observation Center run through the University of Colorado at Boulder and a participant in the two-hour documentary.

"I think intuitively we know there are connections, but when you can actually trace dust storms off the Sahara to weather events in North America it changes things," Abdalati said.

Thanks to satellite data, climate models have been refined, Abdalati added. All 15 climate models in place before most of the Earth-observing satellites were launched have now been changed to reflect the new data gathered by the satellites. Scientists have taken that information to craft a more accurate picture of what future climates could look like
