For the past week I have been assaulted with stench on 1-35 just between Moore and Norman. Did a sewage plant explode somewhere?

Explode? no.
One in that area? yep.
Gross on occasion? double yep.

It's the City of Moore sewage treatment plant. You really only notice it on calm days....... Fortunately Oklahoma has a really limited number of calm days!

They need to plant acres of honeysuckle or something to try to mask it. LOL

It is really awful some days. Though I'm not sure if it is worse than Norman's just off Hwy 9. You smell that bad boy all over the South Campus area. I feel sorry for the people that live over there.

I am not sure why anyone would want to live just off Hwy 9 on the south side of Norman?

It’s not just the sewage plant; it’s also been the city yard waste mulching facility that stinks.
However sometimes the odors that are smelled around the Lloyd Noble arena are cause by air that flows though storm water drains and up though the man hole covers and drains.

OU could easily reduce this problem by building a gate that would swing open with water flow and then close to block air flow.
Norman has several other places in town were a swinging water gate would lower odor issues.

I smell it every time I drive down to Norman now...I'm not sure how you guys only smell it on calm days. I hate that the entry to Norman has been bastardized with that scent now. Considering there are Norman neighborhoods blossoming around Indian Hills Rd. now I'm surprised there hasn't been more of an outcry about it.

It's only been around for the last couple years so I'm figuring it's a new facility...and am baffled as to why they would put it to such close proximity to a huge highway and growing residential area.

It's the City of Moore sewage treatment plant.Similar question was posted on City of Moore's Facebook feed and answered:
The waste water treatment plant is being completely rebuilt. It is a project that has been in the works since 2003. It takes a long time due to environmental reviews and other issues that happen when building a new $52 million system. The new system should go online this winter and the smell will go away.
Here is a link to a page on the City of Moore's website regarding the treatment plant:

So, Norman has a neighborhood called "Dowisetrepla"?

(That was for the "How I Met Your Mother" fans.)
