A bunch of coworkers and I have signed up. I've never done one, but it looks like a lot of fun.

I really wish my wife and I could go - but we've committed to the Tough Mudder near Austin at the same time.

Nice! Is this your first one or have you done it before?

The wife and I do mud runs a lot, but this is our first Tough Mudder. I'm told nothing compares to the Tough Mudder and the Spartan Races. We've been training for awhile now. I'm on a two-a-day schedule now. 5:30am cycling or Body Pump 1hr classes at the Y, 5 days a week and then cycling, body pump, step cardio or jogging 1.5-2hrs in the evening 5 days a week and then a 1.5 hour conditioning class on Saturday mornings. Take Sundays off. Wish we had a ropes course in the metro where we could practice. Some of the obstacles are really hard to prepare for. Not looking forward to the electrified obstacles.

It looks amazingly tough and good luck to both you and your wife.

Whoah, I didn't know they had electrified obstacles! What are they, like cattle fencing or something? That will get your attention! Good luck with that, it will be a big accomplishment to finish it.

Thanks. We have a lot of friends who run marathons or a triathlon as a "over 40" challenge. The wife and I just have no mental stamina for marathons (way too boring), so we started doing mud races as our getting older endurance challenge. I don't mind some running as long as you throw in some distractions like mud, ice water and three story tall rope ladders. A celebratory beer and live music at the end also help.

To Practice for the Tough Mudder we are doing the Race the Reaper extreme endurance run (http://racethereaper.org/homeOK.html) over the Labor Day weekend they have a $29 special (55% off) via LivingSocial (https://www.livingsocial.com/deals/402508?ref=conf-jp&rpi=75967391).

In the video, (at 1:16) those yellow ropes hanging down are electrified. There is a Nightline episode where the reporter did the race and was knocked out when he got electrocuted. They also use real barbed wire and razor wire during part of the course and they say the dumpsters full of ice water really get your attention. If this race goes okay we are going to try the Spartan Race next year.
