They've been working on this for years. I think they became acquainted with Des McAnuff through Pete Townshend, if I recall correctly. It isn't mentioned in those stories, but McAnuff adapted Tommy for Broadway. I do know they discussed the idea of a Broadway adaptation with Townshend, who was enthusiastic about it.
