Should have pinned this some time ago...

This is a reminder to support Will in his efforts to obtain some new photography equipment.

If you can spare a little cash, it would be a nice way to thank Will for the tremendous amount of work he has done over the last couple of years.

Wow...thanks so much Pete. I hope putting a lot of stuff out there has helped inform people around the country of what the city is like and what we're about. I do it partly for us as citizens but also a lot of it is for people who don't have an opinion of Oklahoma City one way or the other. We're either "horse and buggy days", "Oklahoma City bombing" or "Thunder basketball". I like to let photos and video do the talking and let people judge for themselves.

Chamber of Commerce needs to give you some sort of recognition.
You do more on your own than lots of agencies and organization.
Making a difference, like they say!

What's great about what Will does is he's not just some guy taking photos from his car as he's driving through downtown. The video work involves intensive staging for time lapse shots - he's going to some of the most obscure places to get the perfect views. He's capturing images and videos of downtown's transformation without commentary, without altering it one way or another. He provides us a view of downtown at its best - a new skyscraper coming out of the ground - and not so best, as with the windstorm on New Year's Eve. He's the one guy I'm truly happy to share OKC Central with.

Will and/or Metro,

I have a couple of 5Ds and a 7D and a bag full of lenses (35, 50, 100 Macro, 24-70, 70-200). I would be glad to go out with you guys one day in the next few weeks if you want to use my gear to capture all the happenings of downtown. Let me know. Cheers.

TS, I'd love to take you up on the offer and borrow the 200mm until I can get a bigger zoom lens.

Thanks for all the great images! Keep a look at the local Sam's also for a decent camera. I just bought a backup camera for a steal in the Sam's return area...... A Nikon D5100 with two lenses for $500. They sell them new for $1,000 but the returns are marked way down and it was like brand new. Battery ad never even been unpacked.

Also the non-pro Canon SX40 has an unbelievable zoom..... Samples I took on a recent trip to Costa Rica..... http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/1940/sx40zoom.jpg

There's an offer that goes through March 3 (three weeks) that gives $200 off the body and one lens that I'm interested in getting. It's always best to try and nab something on sale. Still got a long ways to go for the goal. It's at 8% completed. I want to say thanks again for the folks who have given and I want to make the most of it.

By the way, if anyone is interested in my old Canon EOS 10D (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos10d/) with the old 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/lenses/canon_24-70_2p8) lens let me know. It's used but still looks new because I take care of everything. They both have the boxes and everything it came in. Been sitting in a closet collecting dust. I've got two batteries and a CF card. I have a case too, but I might need it for the new camera.

Just noticed this...

I don't know if I should wait on this one or not. It's the same lens but they re-release it every few years. The one I have is the old one. I was planning on getting the current one, but the new one says it's available in April from B&H. However it's $1000 more.

Yeah, I'm sure the ii will be great (I have the 70-200L IS ii, and it's spectacular)...But still...That's a $2,200 lens you're talking, and it won't be a huge step up from the already great 24-70 you already have.

catch22
02-11-2012, 05:11 PM
There is nothing wrong with the 10D or the 24-70 lens.....

If they are in great condition for someone else and they are sitting in the closet why aren't they in good enough condition for you?

Not trying to be rude, but what is wrong with this equipment that prohibits you from taking good photos for this website? I personally know a handful of professional photographers still running the 10D for their low-res work (using it for their online clients and hobby, but not for their print/magazine/book contracts).

Don't take this the wrong way, but having some knowledge and first hand experience in the photography world I am wondering why the need for the absolute best since others will be paying for it.... My newest piece of equipment is 6 years old, and I'm still shooting with it on a weekly basis.

I appreciate the work you do for this site and you are no doubt talented, creative, and have "it". Not many people have "it"....so I don't say that lightly. But, is the 2012 Corvette necessary when the 2009 Toyota Camry will be more than capable of delivering exceptional power to cover the things you want it to do?

I doubt the newer model of the 28-70 is worth it after reading the articles. If I was only doing photos for this forum, I could just use my iPhone. The reason I want the 7D is for the video capabilities and the film look I can get with using an SLR with a lens. That's not something I can do with a standard camcorder. I would still have to use it for zoom photos until I got a zoom lens. What I can do with all this goes beyond just what I can contribute here. It's a hugely popular "modern" camera. A lot of what you see on Vimeo is video DSLR's.

The 60D is three or four hundred cheaper, has the same sensor in it (same resolution and result), and has a flip-out screen which is MUCH better for video (only time I use it). Pretty much the only things that matter that are "better" on the 7D are better AF and faster FPS. It has MA as well, but I've never needed that. Not once. On any camera. These are the reasons I didn't buy the 7D. You'll get the same pics and video with the 60D.

If Canon would get off their butts with the 5DIII/X/whatever, I'd sell you my 60D for a great price!

I have no need of the 10D, and only a passing interest in the 24-70, as I have that focal length covered with a couple of lenses...But I'd probably jump on a good enough deal, mainly because I'm a sucker for red rings! I was more curious as to why you'd be getting rid of it. Those are pretty damn nice (and expensive) lenses.

For some reason, I thought there was a newer version of the 24-70 but I actually have the one I was raising money for. Shows how detached I've been from photography. So I really just need the 7D body only. A good zoom lens would be great too. I only really would use it for the zoom shots of Devon Tower as it got further skyward. I don't need that right away though. There won't be anything near that height for years if we're lucky to get another significant building. I really haven't photographed regularly since 2004-2005 but I got pretty good.

Like I was saying earlier man...The 60D will give you the same shots for quite a bit less money. And in my opinion, is better for video because the screen flips out and articulates. This is a lifesaver (or more accurately, a back saver) for both landscape photography as well as video.

Tamron and Sigma also make GREAT 70-200 lenses for quite a bit less money than the Canon 70-200L IS ii. I've got a friend that makes pretty good money, and his go-to lens is the Sigma 70-200.

It's a GREAT camera for action shots. Great autofocus (plenty of points), and very high frames per second in it's price range. It's the best camera in the Canon lineup without going full-frame.

Before you start selling prints, make sure Devon allows for that. Would hate to see you get in trouble with them for selling prints without the proper licensing.

Haven't looked this up in awhile, but unless there is a trademark or trade dress infringement, wouldn't he be fine to sell the prints of a building on public display?

From my understanding, you need permission if you are taking pictures on the property, not of the property. I can legally take a picture of your house from the street and sell the photos as a postcard.

Don't take this as law though, consult the books first for verification. I may be wrong, been a few years since I was involved with professional photography. I miss it....

I became curious about the selling of prints after reading the last few posts. I found this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1123694) at a photography forum that is very informative and has links to several authoritative sources. The bottom line seems to be that photography is an art form and, as such, one is pretty much free to photograph and sell prints. But when somebody buys the prints, there may or may not be laws pertaining to their use. But the actual photography and prints is considered art and anybody can sell their art.

Started another fund to get a working camcorder. The one I did all the video work from 2010-2012 quit working almost a year ago. The 2013 model of the camcorder I got in 2010 will be available soon so I thought I would start another one of these.
