I need to find some information on the break up of the USSR in 1991. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to current events back then, and really do not know anything about it.

One of my favorite sources for random info (and it's generally pretty accurate) is Wikipedia.

I'm sure they'd have some great info on the USSR.
